1.To celebrate the Lunar New Year, some Chinese people would rather return to their hometowns to visit their families than travel abroad.

两倍的表达方式是twice as...as...。

5.—You look so angry.What's wrong?

—Look at my hair, I'm just not satisfied(satisfy) with the way he cut my hair.

7.A new school is said to be built on what is considered to be the best place for farming.

...is considered to be the best place for farming.

8.Disturbing(disturb)news came that an unknown disease was spreading in the area.

disturbing“令人心烦的”;disturbed“不安的;心烦的”。an unknown disease was spreading in the area为同位语从句,从句不缺成分用that来引导。

A

If you want to disturb the car industry, you'd better have a few billion dollars:Mom-and-pop carmakers are unlikely to beat the biggest car companies. But in agriculture, small farmers can get the best of the major players.By connecting directly with customers, and by responding quickly to changes in the markets as well as in the ecosystems (生态系统),small farmers can keep one step ahead of the big guys.As the co-founder of the National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC,美国青年农会) and a family farmer myself,I have a front-row seat to the innovations among small farmers that are transforming the industry.

For example, take the Quick Cut Greens Harvester,a tool developed just a couple of years ago

by a young farmer,Jonathan Dysinger,in Tennessee, with a small loan from a local Slow Money group. It enables small-scale farmers to harvest 175 pounds of green vegetables per hour—a huge improvement over harvesting just a few dozen pounds by hand—suddenly making it possible for the little guys to compete with large farms of California. Before the tool came out, small farmers couldn't touch the price per pound offered by California farms. But now, with the combination of a better price point and a generally fresher product, they can stay in business.

The sustainable success of small farmers, though, won't happen without fundamental changes to the industry. One crucial factor is secure access to https://www.doczj.com/doc/c41939613.html,petition from investors, developers, and established large farmers makes owning one's own land unattainable for many new farmers. From 2004 to 2013,agricultural land values doubled, and they continue to rise in many regions.

Another challenge for more than a million of the most qualified farm workers and managers is a non-existent path to citizenship—the greatest barrier to building a farm of their own. With farmers over the age of 65 outnumbering (多于) farmers younger than 35 by six to one,and with two-thirds of the nation's farmland in need of a new farmer,we must clear the path for talented people willing to grow the nation's food.

There are solutions that could light a path toward a more sustainable and fair farm economy, but farmers can't clumsily put them together before us.We at the NYFC need broad support as we urge Congress to increase farmland conservation,as we push for immigration reform, and as we seek policies that will ensure the success of a diverse and ambitious next generation of farmers from all backgrounds. With a new farm bill to be debated in Congress, consumers must take a stand with young farmers.

1.The author mentions car industry at the beginning of the passage to introduce B.

A.the progress made in car industry

B.a special feature of agriculture

C.a trend of development in agriculture

D.the importance of investing in car industry

2.What does the author want to illustrate with the example in paragraph 2?D

A.Loans to small local farmers are necessary.

B.Technology is vital for agricultural development.

C.Competition between small and big farms is fierce.

D.Small farmers may gain some advantages over big ones.

根据第二段中的“...suddenly making it possible for the little guys to compete with large farms of California.”以及“...they can stay in business.”

3.What is the difficulty for those new farmers?C

A.To gain more financial aid.

B.To hire good farm managers.

C.To have farms of their own.

D.To win old farmers' support.

根据第三段中的“Competition from investors, developers, and established large farmers makes owning one's own land unattainable for many new farmers.”

4.What should farmers do for a more sustainable and fair farm economy?A

A.Seek support beyond NYFC.

B.Expand farmland conservation.

C.Become members of NYFC.

D.Invest more to improve technology.

根据题干中的a more sustainable and fair farm economy定位到文章最后一段。

B

Songwriter and recording artist Paul Reisler established Kid Pan Alley in 1999.It is a non-profit(非营利的)organization that holds songwriting workshops, for students across the nation. He has worked with more than 35,000 students and produced more than 2,200 songs since that time.

Paul says the power of music can teach children skills they would not receive in the American educational system. He believes the system depends increasingly on standardized (标准化的)tests to measure success.“We're living in a creative economy now.So what we're really doing is trying to inspire kids to be creative,” Paul says.

At Orr Elementary School in Washington,95 percent of the students come from poor families. Some are homeless. Some are going through various challenges, living in shelters and so forth. However, those kids still want to strive(奋斗)for greatness.

Jonna Turner,Director of Creative Programs at the school, says the 4th and 5th grade students often focus on family more than school. They are extremely important help to the families. They make sure food is ready when they come home and do other jobs for their homes.

Washington D.C.Police Department records say 70 violent crimes and 200 property crimes have happened within a kilometer of the school in the past year alone. But all elementary schools have a positive hope for happiness. And for students' parents,Paul Reisler's music program works well in that terrible place.

Back at the workshop,Paul Reisler encourages the students to move beyond ideas coming from television.Mr.Ray,Orr's dean of students, says the workshops and concerts create positive memories that will last for years.

A.To shelter the homeless kids.

B.To help children to be creative.

C.To change the educational system.

6.What do we know about the students in Orr Elementary School in Washington?D

A.All of them committed crimes.

B.They all want to become famous.

C.They have no chance to get education.

D.Some of them live in difficult conditions.

由第三段中的“poor, homeless”及“going through various challenges, living in shelters and so forth”等内容可知,这里有些学生的生活状况很艰难。故选D。

7.What can we infer from the fourth and fifth paragraphs?C

A.The children are very brave.

B.The children work very hard in school.

C.The workshop is a good experience for the children.

D.The children have to leave school to support the family.

8.According to Mr.Ray,what kind of effect does the workshop make on children?A

A.Positive. B.Negative.

C.Uncertain. D.Doubtful.

由最后一段的最后一句“Mr.Ray,Orr's dean of students, says the workshops and concerts create positive memories that will last for years.” 故选A。

9.What would be the best title of the text?C

A.How to make children creative

B.How to help poor students

C.Paul Reisler and his Kid Pan Alley

D.Poor children have more responsibilities

G.If you stop improving yourself, you will realize that your life will be meaningless gradually.

2.本段的小标题是“Never rest on the past.”。

3.根据文章结构可知,此空为小标题,与其他几个小标题并列,因此可供选择的选项为A项和B项,又根据第一句“Be grateful for what you have got.”

It was now raining heavily. My husband was away.I did not want to ask anyone else to go with me.So I went to the hospital by 1.myself.I was taken to a small room.Lina 2.was lying (lie) sleeping quietly on a table.

This wasn't 3.the first time Lina had taken too many pills.I knew she would sleep deeply for about twelve hours 4.until/till the poison had stopped doing its harm.I sat down by Lina's side and watched her sleep. The room was still.I looked around. The room seemed familiar.“Have I been here before?”I wondered.I looked around 5.again.“I'm sure I've been in this room,” I told myself. Then I remembered. It was in this very room that I gave birth 6.to Lina seventeen years ago.7.How happy I was then!Lina used to be such a bright,8.healthy (health) and nice child.“What has turned her into a dope-taker (吸毒者)?”I asked myself.“And why are millions of young people like her 9.taking(take) dope to destroy themselves? There must be something 10.seriously(serious) wrong with our society. What is it?”

解析:

was lying“正躺着睡觉”。

give birth to “生孩子”。

4 Unit 1 A STUDENT OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Africa. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Then we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. However, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her babies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family. Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observing and recording their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she first arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to begin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For example, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until then everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chimps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how chimps communicate with each other, and her study of their body language helped her work out their social system. For forty years Jane Goodall has been outspoken about making the rest of the world understand and respect the life of these animals. She has argued that wild animals should be left in the wild and not used for entertainment or advertisements. She has helped to set up special places where they can live safely. She is leading a busy life but she says: "Once I stop, it all comes crowding in and I remember the chimps in laboratories. It's terrible. It affects me when I watch the wild chimps. I say to myself, 'Aren't they lucky?" And then I think about small chimps in cages

Unit 4 A NIGHT THE EARTH DIDN’T SLEEP Strange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. For three days the water in the village wells rose and fell. Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks in them. A smelly gas came out of the fields looking for places to hide. Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about 3:00 am on July 28, 1976, some people saw bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard outside the city of Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky. In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. But the one million people of the city, who thought little of these events, were asleep as usual that night. At 3:42 am everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world was at an end! Eleven kilometres directly below the city one of the greatest earthquakes of the 20th century had begun. It was felt in Beijing, which is more than two hundred kilometres away. One-third of the nation felt it. A huge crack that was eight kilometres long and thirty metres wide cut across houses, roads and canals. Steam burst from holes in the ground. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In fifteen terrible seconds a large city lay in ruins. The sufferings of the people was extreme. Two-thirds of them died or were injured during the earthquake. The number of people who were killed or seriously injured reached more than 400,000. But how could the survivors believe it was natural? Everywhere they looked nearly everything was destroyed. All of the city’s hospital, 75%of its factories and buildings and 90%of its homes were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves. No wind, however, could blow them away. Two dams fell and most of the bridges also fell or were not safe for travelling. The railway tracks were now useless pieces of steel. Tens of thousands of cows would never give milk again. Half a million pigs and millions of chickens were dead. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. People were shocked. Then, later that afternoon, another big quake which was almost as strong as the first one shook Tangshan. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last. All hope was not lost. Soon after the quakes, the army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to help the rescue workers. Hundreds of thousands of people were helped. The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead. To the north of the city, most of the 10,000 miners were rescued from the coal mines there. Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed. Fresh water was taken to the city by train, truck and plane. Slowly, the city began to breathe again.
