My grandmother cut a recipe sometime in the 1940s or 50s for “Mrs. Orr?s Cake” from The Monitor. When my dad tasted this cake, he liked it so much that he requested this cake every year, both for Father?s Day and his birthday in September.

As a creature of habit, Dad didn?t always greet new experiments in cooking. When I got my first apartment, I began to learn to cook. Often when I invited Mom and Dad over for dinner, I tried a recipe. Dad would look at his plate suspiciously and asked, “Am I the …guinea pig??”

Dad especially didn?t encourage experimentation where his birthday cake was concerned. It had to be Mrs. Orr?s white icing cake, not in layers. Once we asked if he

would like chocolate icing for a change. Silly question.

Dad was very willing to share his special cake with family and friends, so we enjoyed Mrs. Orr?s cake with white icing twice a year. Nothing fancy, just like Dad. Of course, we asked repeatedly if he?d rather have a different cake, maybe decorated. Again, silly question.

Years ago, my cousin told me she made Mrs. Orr?s cake as a layer cake and used chocolate icing. I tried it when I was having company (not Dad), using jam between layers and chocolate icing on top and sides. The sides looked too messy for company, so I pressed chopped nuts into them, and everyone thought I bought it at a bakery. It was amazingly rich and wonderful, hence the name I gave it, Majestic Chocolate Cake. The funny thing, though, is that I missed the white icing!

Dad isn?t with us anymore, but whenever I see this recipe in my file, I?m filled with sweet memories of the man who loved his special cake, appreciated those who?d baked it, and shared it so freely.

It has been proved that even if a child is in a helmet when biking, or skating, it may not protect her from a serious head injury.

Every year, 390,000 children under age 15 go to hospital emergency rooms with bike-related injuries. Of that number, about one third children suffer head injuries and an estimated 200 die. By wearing a helmet, a child can reduce her risk of injury by as much as 85 percent. But remember——a bicycle helmet must fit properly to be safe. Here are five steps to make sure your child?s helmet fits proper ly.

1) If you haven?t bought your child?s helmet already, you might want to consider one with a rear stabilizer. A rear stabilizer holds the back of the head gently and helps the helmet stay correctly positioned.

2) The helmet should fit closely and shouldn?t slide from side to side or front to back. If your child can put two fingers on both temples(太阳穴) inside the helmet, it?s too big. Try a smaller size. But if the next size down is too small, use the fit pads(护垫). Fit pads come in different sizes and attach to the helmet with Velcro.

3) Tell your child to open her mouth widely and ask if she can feel the helmet push down onto the top of her head. If she can?t, you need to readjust her helmet.

4) To prevent strap slippage, wind a rubber band around the strap where it meets the fastener.

5) Recheck the fit regularly.

You should replace the bicycle helmet:

If she has been in an accident with it.

If the buckle(金属扣) breaks or if a piece breaks off.

If it doesn?t have a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, American Society for Testing and Materials, or Snell Memorial Foundation sticker.

If it doesn?t fit correctly. Even if the helmet fit perfectly two years ago, it might be too small now.

60. Who is this passage mainly written for?

A. Children.

B. Teachers.

C. Parents.

D. Helmet producers.

61. What does the author mainly want to stress in the 2nd paragraph?

A. The steps to find a proper helmet.

B. The consequences of bike-related injuries.

C. The measures to prevent bike-related injuries.

D. The necessity of wearing a helmet of right size.

62. If a girl finds a helmet a little bit big for her head, what should she do?

A. She can use some fit pads.

B. She must buy a smaller size.

C. She must make the helmet slide from side to side.

D. She can put fingers on both temples inside the helmet.

63. If Phil White, a father, finds the buckle of his girl?s helmet broken, he can______.

A. continue to use the bicycle helmet

B. buy a new bicycle helmet for her

C. mend the bicycle helmet himself

D. throw away the broken buckle

C

“What?s the rush?”People often say to someone in a hurry, “Rome wasn?t built

in a day, you know?”

The Romans were some of the greatest builders of all time, but they still had to do it brick by brick. The city of Rome was a great accomplishment of engineering. Its public buildings were both beautiful and massive. To build them, the Romans needed new construction methods, interesting designs——and plenty of time.

The Romans? buildings rank among their greatest achievements. Some still stand, including the most famous Roman building of all, the Colosseum. This stadium in Rome got its name from the Colossus, a gigantic statue of the emperor Nero that once stood nearby. The Colosseum was big, too. It seated 50,000 people, and its walls towered 49 meters above the streets around it. Used for games, fights, and performances, the Colosseum was one of the most important gathering places in Rome.

Romans used one of their greatest inventions——concrete——for the

Colosseum?s main building material. They wet the concrete and poured it into molds. Concrete was lighter than stone and could be made in longer, more irregular shapes than bricks.

The most important element in the design of the Colosseum was its many curved arches. The great advantage of an arch is its strength. If the top of a doorway is flat, the weights it supports may sometimes crack it. Arches can support more weight without cracking. To build an arch, Roman builders first made a slightly smaller arch out of wood. Then they placed moist concrete around it. When the concrete was dry, they removed the wood. The result was a perfect strong concrete arch.

Building a structure the size of the Colosseum required tens of thousands of workers. Theses workers used several kinds of tools. To check that walls were straight, they used plumb lines——weights tied to pieces of string. To lift materials to the top of the walls, Roman workers used a device called the great wheel, which looked like a large mouse wheel. They climbed into the wheel and turned it, allowing an attached crank to lift heavy loads into the air.

Just how long did it take to build Rome? Much longer than a day. The Colosseum alone took about ten years to build! But 2,000 years later, ruins still stand. An old saying warns that, “When the Colosseum falls, also ends Rome; and when the Rome falls, the world will end.”

A. the Colosseum is still in perfect condition

B. the Colosseum deserves architects? research

C. the Colosseum plays a significant role in history

D. the Colosseum has a magic power to make a prediction

D

There was a time when Americans ordered coffee by simply asking for “coffee”. Ordering a “venti skinny chai latte” or a “grand chocolate cookie crumble frappuccino” would have earned, at best, a blank stare.

But that was before Howard Schultz took Starbucks from a single coffeehouse in downtown Seattle to a chain with more than 17,000 shops in 55 countries. The chain grew so quickly that as early as 1998 a headline in The Onion, a satirical (讽刺的) American newspaper, joked, “New Starbucks Opens in Rest room of Existing Starbucks”.

But in 2013 Starbucks decided to do away with something important: it dropped

the word “coffee” from its logo. While coffee remains as central to Starbucks?s business and identity as hamburgers are to McDonald?s, the company?s recent American acquisitions(收购) have moved it beyond coffee.

On October 14th Starbucks made its largest acquisition yet, buying Teavana, an Atlanta-based tea manufacturer, for $620 million. This is not the firm?s first attempt into the tea market——its stores sell tea, of course, and it bought Tazo, a tea distributor, back in 1999——but it is by far the boldest. When Starbucks bought Tazo, it was simply a brand, but Teavana has some 300 shops, largely mall-based, throughout North America. Mr. Alstead hopes that scale will allow Starbucks “to do for tea what we did for coffee.”

This may seem, as they say at Starbucks, a tall order. Americans drink far more coffee than tea. In 2011 the average coffee consumption was 9.39 pounds per person, while tea was just 0.9 pounds. Coffee has long been an essential part of American mornings.

However, since 1980 American?s coffee consumption has fallen and is forecast to fall further. Consumption of tea, on the other hand, has been growing——perhaps benefiting from the idea that it has health benefits that coffee lacks, perhaps driven partly by immigration from tea-drinking countries. The Tea Association of the USA put the value of the tea market in America at $8.2 billion in 2012, up from $1.8 billion just 20 years earlier. The sharpest growth will come from tea that is green——which also happens to be the color of money and the logo of Starbucks.

68. The news about Starbucks in The Onions is used ______.

A. to introduce a topic

B. to support a statement

C. to attract readers? interest

D. to satisfy readers? curiosity

69. The underlined phrase “a tall order” in the 5th paragraph probably means ______.

A. a difficult task

B. an encouraging slogan

C. a useful suggestion

D. an amazing measure

70. All the following are correct EXCEPT ______.

A. Americans are more concerned about health than before

B. The biggest increase of tea consumption is from green tea

C. Buying Tazo is by far the boldest acquisition of Starbucks

D. Americans tend to drink coffee instead of tea in the morning

71. What?s the main idea of the passage?

A. Tea will replace coffee in Starbucks.

B. Starbucks chain develops most quickly.

C. Starbucks attempts to expand to tea market.

D. Coffee is to be removed from Starbuck?s logo.

E

While some dictionaries define the word “right” as “a privilege” when used in the context of “human rights”, we are talking about so mething more basic. Originally, people had rights only because of their membership in a group, such as a family. Then, in 539 BC, Cyrus the Great, after conquering the city of Babylon, did something totally unexpected——he set all slaves free and let them return home. Moreover, he declared people should choose their own religion. Cyrus? statements are about the first

“human rights” declaration in history.

Every person has certain basic rights, simply by the fact of being human. These are called “human rights” rather than a privilege, which can be taken away at someone?s sudden desire. They are “rights” because they are things you are allowed to be, to do or to have. These rights are there for your protection against people who might want to harm or hurt you. They are also there to help us get along with each other and live in peace.

But many people, when asked to name their rights, will list only freedom of speech and belief and perhaps one or two others. There is no question that these are important rights, but the full scope of human rights is very broad. They mean choice and opportunity. They mean the freedom to get a job, adopt a career, select a partner of one?s choice and raise children. They include the right to travel widely and the right to work without trouble, abuse and threat of arbitrary (霸道) dismissal. They even embrace the right to leisure.

In ages past, there were no human rights. Then the idea turned up that people should have certain freedoms. And that idea, after World War II (1939-1945), resulted finally in the document called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the thirty rights to which all people are entitled.

72. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. What Are Human Rights?

B. When do Human Rights Work?

C. Why do We Have Human Rights?

D. How do We Handle Human Rights?

73. How did the first human rights come into being?

A. By Cyrus setting the slaves free.

B. By Cyrus choosing his own religion.

C. By Cyrus conquering the city of Babylon.

D. By Cyrus making his statements about human rights.

74. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Human rights have the same meaning as privileges.

B. Human rights can be taken away for some reason.

C. Human rights can help you live a peaceful life.

D. Human rights can be used to hurt others.

75. From the last two paragraphs we can infer that ______.

A. people would have certain freedoms rather than human rights

B. many people have a limited understanding of human rights

C. human rights mean choice and opportunity

D. World War II decided human rights

Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different story to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to leave college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a mix of adopted(收养)and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To put eyes on him was wonderful and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8. Our home was a complete zoo—a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave upon the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each term. The hardest part was feeling sorry about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to give up, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In Tokyo there are always too many people in the places where I want to be. Of course there are too many cars. The Japanese drive very fast when they can. But in Tokyo they often spend a long time in traffic jams. Tokyo is not different when one wants to walk. At certain times of the day there are a lot of people on foot in London's Oxford Street. But the streets near Ginza in Tokyo always have a lot of people on foot, and sometimes it is really difficult to walk. People are very polite; there are just too many of them. The worst time to be in the street is at 11:30 at night. That is when the night-clubs are closing and everybody wants to go home. There are 35,000 night-clubs in Tokyo, and you do not often see one that is empty. Most people travel to and from work by train. Tokyo people buy six million train tickets every day. At most stations, trains arrive every two or three minutes, but at certain hours there do not seem to be enough trains. Although they are usually crowded, Japanese trains are very good. They always leave and arrive on time. On a London train you would see everybody reading a newspaper. In Tokyo trains everybody in a seat seems to be asleep, whether his journey is long or short. In Tokyo, I stood outside the station for five minutes. Three fire-engines raced past on the way to one of the many fires that Tokyo has every day. Tokyo has so many surprises that none of them can really surprise me now. Instead, I am surprised at myself: I must go there next year on business. I know I hate the overcrowded city. But I feel like a man who is returning to his long-lost love. 21. Tokyo is different from London in that ____________.
