第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

This story happened during World War Ⅱ. It was a fierce battle. Many soldiers had lost their lives. Horror gripped(紧抓) Jim’s heart b ecause he saw that his lifelong friend was left behind in a trench (战壕). Continuous gunfire whizzed over his head. Jim asked the lieutenant (中尉) if he might go out into the “no-man’s-land” between the trenches to bring his fallen friend back.

“You can go,”said the lieutenant, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your life away.” Jim looked up. Continuous gunfire was still whizzing over his head, but he had made up his mind. He went out of the trench and moved towards his fallen friend slowly. Amazingly, he managed to reach his friend, put him onto his shoulders and bring him back to their company’s trench. As the two got to the bottom of the trench, the lieutenant checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at Jim.

“I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead and you got shot. You may die, too.” “It was worth it, though, Sir,” said Jim. The lieutenant was confused and asked, “What do you mean? Your friend is dead.” “Yes, Sir,” Jim answered, “but it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive and I had the satisfaction of hearing him saying, ‘Jim…, I knew you’d come.’”

Guilford County Schools’ oldest volunteer, 97-year-old Thurman Haynes, has been chosen as the national winner in the Salute to Senior Service Competition, sponsored (赞助) by Home Instead.

Haynes, a daily volunteer at Haynes-Inman Education Center in Jamestown, was selected from thousands of nominees (被提名者). “Thurman Haynes reminds us all how important it is to celebrate life on a daily basis,” said Kevin Carr in his nomination. “His love he gives others is amazing.”

Haynes has been involved with the school from the start. He sold the school system the land on which Haynes-Inman was built. He can see the school from his home. The school, which opened in August, 2010, educates special-needs students between the ages of 3 and 22. And Haynes knows something about that, too.

His only grandchild, Meredith, had mental and physical disabilities. She died in 1993 shortly before her 21st birthday. The school is named in part for her, the Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center. In her honor, he volunteers more than 80 hours per month at the school.

He is often one of the first to arrive and greet students each school day. He assists them off the bus and ensures they arrive at class safely. Haynes also lends a hand during PE classes, helping students participate in volleyball, jump rope and other activities.

The students and staff at Haynes-Inman held a parade in January in honor of Haynes’ 97th birthday. “Haynes proves age is not important when it comes to making a positive difference to th e lives of others,” said Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead. Haynes is among the 62 percent of seniors 68 and older who take part in voluntary work, according to a recent Marist Poll sponsored by Home Instead.

8. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Thurman Haynes refuses to retire.

B. A 97-year-old man is kind to others.

C. More and more seniors do voluntary work.

D. A 97-year-old volunteer wins a national award.

9. Haynes got nominated probably because of .

A. his age and education background

B. his excellent voluntary service

C. his positive attitude towards life

D. his long work hours per month

10. How does Haynes help the special-needs students?

A. He helps them rebuild their confidence.

B. He drives them to school and back home.

C. He teaches them patiently in PE classes.

D. He treats them kindly with a heart of gold.

11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Jeff Huber was in charge of Haynes’ birthday parade.

B. The author calls on more seniors to do voluntary work.

C. Volunteering can make the old people live a positive life.

D. Many American seniors devote themselves to voluntary work.

D

People with different interests and preferences can enjoy themselves through hip-hop culture. It involves spoken words, break-dancing, painting, fashion, lively design, technology and more. Hip-hop is becoming the unofficial music in the education world, as more artists organize school programs, summer camps, and other activities aimed at engaging (使参与) city youth in the classroom through the beliefs in hip-hop culture. Even more and more university teachers —who were once strongly against hip-hop —have joined the group: in the past two decades, hip-hop culture, including hip-hop education, has become an accepted field in universities and the subject of a lot of books.

Hip-hop culture has influenced every piece of American culture and global culture. Teachers must be willing to engage in it because it’s a part of their students’ lives. In that way, teachers can truly be effective in teaching students.

Teachers might at first feel frightened by hip-hop culture, an area in which they might not have previous experience. But a lack of knowledge is actually a blessing; the best trained hip-hop educators have been those that are at the beginning disconnected from the culture. One of the biggest sayings in hip-hop is “keep it real”. If a teacher comes to the cla ssroom and says, “I don’t know hip-hop, but I recognize that it’s your culture and I want to lear n,” the kids will teach the teacher, and then the students will be more willing to learn from that educator.

Peer(同龄人) teaching has long been recognized as a powerful way for students to learn and gain confidence in their own abilities. It’s also a useful way of approaching technology in the classroom, where students who love digital technology might know more than their teachers. Thus, teachers and students are put on a more equal basis, with more respect between them —developing an atmosphere where everyone has something to offer for a better educational process.

12. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Some teachers still dislike hip-hop culture.

B. Hip-hop is the most influential music in the world.

C. Hip-hop has become the center of people’s daily life.

D. Hip-hop culture becomes more popular in the education world.

13. According to the text, young people prefer to learn from the teachers who .

A. are fond of music

B. show respect for their culture

C. know nothing about their lives

D. are willing to teach hip-hop culture

14. What advice does the author offer teachers in the last paragraph?

A. Paying more attention to students’ interests.

B. Involving students in teaching certain subjects.

C. Admitting that students know more than teachers.

D. Learning hip-hop culture with advanced technology.

15. Where can we most probably read the text?

A. In the education section of a magazine.

B. In a book on how to learn technology.

C. In a book on how to sing hip-hop songs.

D. In the fashion section of a newspaper.

模块3 U7 L1 1 The Spirit of Explorers Viking Voyages to America The Vikings were the first Europeans to reach America. They achieved this long before Columbus ever set sail. The Vikings were a group of people whose ancestors came from Scandinavia. They controlled the seas and coasts of Northern Europe between the 8th and 10th centuries AD. By around 900 AD, there were many places in Northern Europe where the Vikings chose to live. In 982 AD, when a man called Eric the Red decided to set sail further west, there were as many as 10,000 Vikings living in Iceland. According to the old stories of Iceland and Norway, Eric the Red was forced to leave Iceland because he had committed a murder, for which he got into trouble. Eric reached Greenland and discovered that people could live in the place where he landed. He returned to Iceland and told people there about Greenland. He persuaded some people to go back with him to Greenland. Eric set sail once again, this time with 25 ships, of which only 14 made it to Greenland. Not long after Eric the Red had landed in Greenland, a man called Biarni set sail from Iceland in search of Eric's party. Biarni was hoping to join his father who was with Eric, but he was blown off course and found himself in an unknown land, from where he eventually reached Greenland. In the year 1002, when Eric the Red's son Leif was planning a trip further west, Biarni was the man with whom Leif discussed his plans. Leif followed Biarni's directions and sailed to what is believed to be the coast of present-day Canada. He then sailed further south to an island which is now known as Newfoundland. We know about Eric the Red and Leif's deeds through stories which were written down centuries later in Norway and Iceland. They are the first records we have of Europeans sailing to the Americas.

Unit1 Lesson1 A Couch Potato When I wake up I don’t get up immediately. I turn on the television and watch the children’s programmes and old movies until about haft-past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room. For lunch, I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film —they’re showing some good ones at the moment. In the evenings, I often watch TV series or sport and the news again. I like the main news at six o’clock. At nine thirty, if there is a good play on BBC 2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night, I watch more films and I usually switch off the TV at about two o’clock. I never watch TV all night. I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don’t go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable TV and I sit on the stone wall while the dog walks round in a circle. Of course, I couldn’t live this lifestyle without a good wife. She’s not here now because she’s working, but she always makes my meals. We haven’t got much money, you know, but we’re happy. Sit down and watch TV. Here’s the remote control. You’ve got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great! A Workaholic I normally wake up about five minutes before my alarm clock goes off. As soon as I hear my alarm clock, I jump out of my bed. It takes me less than fifteen minutes to wash, get changed, have breakfast, leave home and get on a bus. I am always the first person to get to the office. The mornings are always very busy and the afternoons are even busier! Meetings and phone calls take up a large part of the day. Every minute of the day is filled with urgent matters. By around eight o’clock, I usually find some time to do my own paperwork and answer some personal e-mails. When I get home at about ten, I look at some documents that I bring back from the office so that I can be ready for the next day’s work. I get to bed around midnight when my wife and children are already asleep. I seldom have time for fun and other activities with my family. My family complains about it. But I try to work hard so that I can make more money for them. Besides, I get bored if there’s nothing to do. I like being busy.
