Design
Setting and resetting is performed hy-
draulically. Depending on the applica-
tion, various operating principles are
utilized, all of which offer the advan-
tage of backlash-free connection.
The coupling friction surfaces have
been treated by a unique, patent ap-
plied method, which more than dou-
bles the friction factor. This produces
a corresponding increase in the trans-
mittable torque.

Use Autoset is a process-improving, torque-limiting coupling with a slip-ping function. The primary function of the coupling is to even out torque peaks. It is mainly used in levellers to improve the quality of the product.If the torque peak continues for too long, it also functions as a safety device. The coupling resets itself
a fter 1-10 minutes.Smartset is used in drive lines where the torsional torque exceeds the nominal system torque in a certain speed range.Typical applications are refiner and compressor drives. Once the drive has reached operating speed, the coupling continues to work as a Safeset coupling.

Process-improving and safety couplings
Design The Autoset transmits the torque by friction created by two tapered sleeves. When the coupling slips more than 180o in a single move-ment, an integrated hydraulic pump injects oil, and the coupling releas-es. When the application stops, the coupling automatically resets to full torque.
The Smartset is based on a Safeset design, with a centrifugal device that is calibrated to the critical speed.

Use Safeset is currently used in steel, rail, marine, mining and power gen-eration applications. They are all custom designed, based on the Safeset principle.
Safeset is a sophisticated overload coupling. It can transmit and release a torque from 0.2 to > 10,000 kNm. Every coupling can easily be adjust-ed from 30 – 100% of the maximum design torque. It can be designed to slip and release after a certain num-ber of degrees, or to release immedi-ately. If necessary, it can be designed to run for hours in the released con-dition.

Design The Safeset coupling consists of a twin-walled sleeve. By applying pressure to the sleeves, a friction connection is created between the coupling and the shaft, hub or both, depending on the design. The trans-mitted torque is linear in relation to the pressure in the sleeve, making it very easy to adjust. The pressure is sealed in with a shear tube. A shear ring is connected to the counterpart of the coupling. When the set torque is exceeded, a shear ring cuts off the shear tube thus, relieving the pressure instantly and releasing the friction surfaces completely.

Former Problem The mill was operated without any torque- limiting safety coupling. A breakage of the rollneck caused severe damage not only to the work roll and spindle, but also to the
pinion gearbox. This resulted in high costs for replacement parts and, even worse, loss of production during the long downtime period.
Product / Solution Safeset SR-F 540 was installed on both output shafts of the pinion gearbox. Now the whole transmis-sion, between the motor and the roll stand, is protected against undesir-able torque peaks.

Former Problem By the year 2000, the two original 7,000 HP motors were near end of life as they were run under overload con d itions. The new motors have sol-id-pole rotors. As the design is rela-tively compact, the new 8,000 HP re-placement motors fit in the foot p rint of the old 7,000 HP motors. The new motors had a different torque curve, which caused startup problems.

Former Problem Overload in water jet impellers, thrusters, conventional propellers and other types of drive components. Overloads are caused by external obstacles or debris in the water such as logs, wires, rocks, ice, floating fenders (tyres), seaweed, or by inter-nal faults such as electric motor fault, engine backfire, etc. The overload occurrences can be more frequent when navigating in narrow water-ways such as harbours and rivers.

Former Problem An old mill with no protection by a torque-limiter, exposing the drive line to considerable risk of overload.
Product / Solution The Safeset SR-F 1000 couplings have released five times between 1999 and 2007, and then only dur-ing a real breakdown situation, pro-tecting the drive line components from damage. The couplings paid back the investment already at the very first release.
