We’ve been in this line for more than twenty years. Here is a copy of our catalogue. I hope some of our products will be of interest to you.

Y: I hope so, too. There is an increasing demand for electronic products, esp. computers in China. So, if your prices are competitive, we can come to terms (成交).( in terms of …在…方面/ be on good terms with sb与…关系好).

K: We think our prices compare favorably with the prices of the same kind of products on the world market.

2.Mr.Green from Spain is interested in silk shirts. He is now having a business talk with Mr.Lin, sales representative of Su Zhou Silk Import and Export Corporation. He asks for 5% discount, but Mr. Lin refuses. Even if he makes a large order, the discount can only be 2%, because of the attractive price.

Y: Mr. Kinch, this time I intend to place a large order, but business is almost impossible unless you give me a discount.

K: In principle, we usually won’t allow any discount, because we have made a big concession in price.

Y: We usually get a considerable discount, when we place such a large order from other suppliers. K: But I don’t think you can get such favorable prices from anywhere else.

Y: We have ordered such a large quantity that a discount, no matter how litter, should be allowed. K: Considering the long-standing business relationship between us, we shall grant you a special discount of 3%.

Y: A 3% discount? It’s too little. We usually get a 10% discount from the European exporters. K: I’m afraid I could not agree with you for such a big discount. In this way, it won’t leave us anything. Well, Mr. Yu, considering this is a new production, we may offer you allowance on a sliding scale.(浮动折扣)

Y: Could you say it more exactly?

K: Well, suppose your order comes to $100000, we’ll give you a 3% discount. And it goes up to 5% for purchase exceeding $300000 and 7% for $400000 and prorate.

Y: Your proposal seems to be reasonable. All right. In order to get the business, I accept it.

3.Write a counter-offer letter to an exporter dealing in T-shirts to express your inability to accept the offer.

Dear Sirs,

We have received your letter of March 8 which says that you are interested in our

We wish to inform you that because of the top quality, our COMPAQ 1200 computers are the best-selling goods in the world market. But this is the first time for us to deal with you. For the sake of friendship and also for the sake of future business, I’d like to have your suggestions. If you should make us an acceptable bid, maybe we’ll conclude the transaction.

As you know, there has been a large demand for computers in your market lately, which can only result in increased prices. If you send us an immediate reply, you may avail yourselves of the advantage of this strengthening market.

Sample Letter Three Seller’s Counter-Counter Offer

Dear Sirs,

We have received your letter of March 8 that the price offered by us for the COMPAQ1200 computer is found to be on the high side and should be reduced to U.S $ 800 per set.

We much regret to say that your counter-offer is not keeping with the current market and it is too low to be acceptable. In these days, we have received a lot of inquiries from buyers in other directions and we believe our price is fixed at a reasonable level. To be frank with you, if it weren’t for our good relations, we wouldn’t have considered making you such a favorable firm offer at the price of U.S $950 per set. We can’t satisfy your counter-offer for the time being.

However, if the size of the first order is over 1000 sets, we may reduce our price by 2%, i. e. U.S. $ 931 per set. This is our rock bottom price.

We hope you would accept this price and place your order at an early time.

Sample Letter Five (Repeat Order 续订)

We have received the captioned shipment ex(由某轮船“运来”的货物时用ex,由某轮船“运走”的货物用Per,而由某轮船“承运”用by) S.S. “East Wine”and are very pleased to inform you that we find the goods quite satisfactory. As we believe we can sell additional quantities in this market, we wish to place with you a repeat order for 1000 dozens of the same style and sizes. If possible, please arrange early shipment of this repeat order, as we are badly in need of the goods.

In case the said goods are not available from stock, we shall be very grateful to you, if you will advise us as to the specifications of those which can be shipped from stock, stating full particulars.

As for the keyboards to be shipped to us, we would like you to have them packed in boxes of 2 dozens each, 100 boxes to a wooden case. We trust you will give special care to the packing in order to avoid damage in transit.

Sample Letter Three (Shipment Schedule)

Dear Sirs,

Your letter of the 25th April came to hand yesterday. Accordingly, we have lost/waste no time in(赶紧干某事) getting in touch with our factories and urged them to hasten their delivery.
