奥巴马就职演讲的修辞分析

一、头韵(Alliteration)

1.Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life.

此句中struggled与sacrificed和live与life两组头韵,前一组再现了先辈们浴血奋战的场景和他们无私奉献的精神,后一组则把一组对美好明天的向往生动地勾勒了出来。

2.We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth.

此句中prosperous与powerful这组头韵,描绘出了美利坚合众国的繁荣富强,头韵的修辞使表达非常具有感染力。

3.But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decision-that time has surely passed.

此句中pat,protecting与putting三个以“P”开头为头韵的词放在一起,给人以巧夺天工之感。

4.We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost.

此句中wield与wonders的运用浑然天成,运用地非常精准。5....whether it can help families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.

此句中三组头韵:families和find,decent与dignified,care与can的运用不仅有效地表达了评判一个政府的标准,而且在演讲中演讲极富韵律,让人过耳不忘。

6.To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow.

这三个以“f”开头的词恰当地运用了头韵这个修辞格,生动地流露了美利坚人民帮助贫穷国家人民的行动与热情。

7.It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke...

此句同意是三个具有头韵效果的词叠用,描绘出了消防队员勇敢无畏冲进浓烟火海的场景。

8.This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

两个名词都以“p”开头连用,是头韵修辞较为普通的运用。

二、元音韵(Assonance)

1....and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

2.They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

元音韵在本演讲稿的例子很多,作为较早就出现的修辞格,元音韵的使用增添了文章字里行间的意境美令人感觉旋律优美,读来令人过目不忘,是非常容易模仿使用的一种修辞格。

三、辅音韵(Consonance)

1. greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

2. grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.

3. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered.

4. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.

辅音韵同元音韵一样,是跟元音韵相类似的一种修辞格。同样也能给人带来韵律的对称,语音的悦耳以及表达的节奏感的效果。

四、反复(Repetition)

1.Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year.

此句中三个“no less”的连续使用描写出了在金融危机时候我们的工人,我们的创造力,我们的商品和服务仍旧保持着一流的水平。这样的反复使用,不仅增加了韵律美,更加强化了对他们的赞美之情。

2.The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage...

此句中三个“whether”的连用使得语义更为明晰,语气也得以递进,强调出了我们的政府该做什么和是什么的问题,让人听来热血沸腾。

3.Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new.

两个“may be new”的连用是欲扬先抑的描写手法的较好的体现,目的是为了引出下文。

4.on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather

seize gladly...

重复使用“duties”一词使其得以强调和突出,深刻地描写出了在负责任的新时代我们肩负的责任,让我们更加认同自己所担负的使命。

五、首语重复(Anaphora)

1. the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

2. our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year.

首语重复是反复的一种特殊情况,这两句中“all”和“last”的三次重复出现,使层次结构变得更为明显,使语言富有回环美、复沓美、节奏美和旋律美。

六、排比(Parallelism)

1.I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.

这是奥巴马总统演讲的首句,以“humbled, grateful, mindful”三个平行的形容词来描写自己当时的心里状态,把自己的诚惶诚恐和感恩戴德之情抒发的淋漓尽致。

2.On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

“on this day”引出的两个排比句先声夺人,让听众清晰地感知了演讲者

所要表达的目的,条理清晰,气势磅礴,令听众精神振奋,信心满怀。

3.For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life. For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the west; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth. For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

三个“for us”的连用,构成了一个节奏感很强的排比段,使气势层层深化,向人民展示出了那些默默无闻,为人奉献的男男女女为了新生活努力奋斗的场景。

4.Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished.

这三个平行的句子并列在一起使得表达更加富有感染力,使听众听完不觉极受鼓舞。

这几个“we will”构成的排比句描绘出了我们将要做出的行动,将来时的运用非常具有震颤力,让听众的使命感油然暴增。

6.To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the west - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

这几句以“to...”开头所构成的排比句,写出了美利坚合众国对于不同势力,不同领导者所把持的态度,字里行间铿锵有力,它们意义相关,语气一致,表意酣畅。

7.we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds.

这几个动词短语的叠用生动的描绘出我们帮助他人所作出的行动,细致详尽的表诉使听众听完就能联想起实际,让人民有了脚踏实地办实事的决心。

8.It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

平行句结构工整,具有很强的节奏感,层层叠进的语言描写大大提高了语言的表现力、感染力和说服力。

9.What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition...

这两个并列句的连用呈现出来的意思相近,却层层深化地描绘出了新一代的美国人民肩负的使命和责任,让人听来非常有认同感。

10.This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny. This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall...

这两句话也是很好的排比句,结构一致,协调对称,创造出了美的节奏。起到了强调语义的功效。

11.The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood.

三个短句的描写同样也是排比句很好的范式,描绘出了我们的先祖在独立革命使面临的艰难险阻,听来不觉有十分强烈的紧迫感。

七、对仗(Antithesis)

1.In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.

在重申我们国家的伟大时强调了两个对立面,激励美国民众明白国之伟大在于自己的努力保持和坚守。

2.Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end.

这组对比修辞的描写结构十分工整,内容相互映衬,给人感觉节奏十分的鲜明。

3.you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

两个短句的对仗表达了我们面对敌人依然勇敢无畏奋力拼搏的毅力。

4.The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity.

这两个对仗的短句透露出经济的发展所依靠的不是国民的生产总值,而是我们国家繁荣所普及的程度。

5.Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But ...these things are old. These things are true.

此处new与old与true的对比显现出我们所面临的危难的前所未有和战胜这些危难的精神与美德的亘古不变。

八、层进(Climax)

1.All this we can do. And all this we will do.

2.For as much as government can do and must do...

3.these things are old. These things are true.

这三个层进的的运用都使用在短句中,意义简单明了,让人易于理解且产生强烈的共鸣。

九、暗喻(Metaphor)

1.The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace.

演讲者将繁荣与和平比作涌起的潮水和平静的湖水,

2.Who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

Path比作是我们一路前行经历的大大小小的磨难的过程,比喻生动而恰当。

3.This is the journey we continue today.

Journey一词译为征途,也比作是我们一直前进一直奋斗的这个过程。

2.Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

这一句中“dust ourselves off”的比喻十分精妙,显示出我们从今日开始复兴美国的良好的精神状态。

3.but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye...

Watchful eye一词生动比作我们面对危机要保持的警惕性,这个比喻使得表达更加具有活力。

4.As we consider the road that unfolds before us...

Road和前面的journey和path表达出的意义相似。

5.The snow was stained with blood.

Blood比作是我们的先祖革命时作出的英勇的牺牲,表现出他们的勇敢顽强。

6.What the cynics failed to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them...

这句话翻译过来译为脚下的土地,十分生动的表达,意思是如今所面对的环境,比直接的表达相比,这样的描写更富活力,更有生活的气息。

十、转喻(Metonymy)

1. but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist. Hand指代友谊之手,fist指代放下屠刀立地成佛。

2....and with eyes fixed on the horizon and Cod’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

以with eyes fixed on the horizon指代眺望远方,看到未来的方向,这样的描写让人总能自然而然的联想起作者所想要表达的真正目的。十一、提喻(Synecdoche)

1. Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks...

“missiles and tanks”意思是导弹和坦克,这里比作战争武器。

2.Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter. Children’s children是以部分代整体,指子孙后代。

十二、夸张(Hyperbole)

1.We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of earth.

夸张在本篇演讲稿里运用的篇幅还是很多的,具体没有全部找出来,开始忘了还有夸张,所以后期补的很麻烦,例句1是很好的范例。十三、矛盾(Oxymoron)

1. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages.

这一句译为就像沉睡在阿林顿国家公墓的陨落的英雄穿越时空喃喃细语的一样,表达了先人与后人所要传递的精神亘古不变。这里运用矛盾的修辞格,是想表达只有力量和信念是在一切艰险唯一得以生存。

还有很多修辞的例子没有具体的写在这篇分析里,但大体上常用的基本都对号入座找出来了,整理这些修辞格的时候发现自己对于个别修辞有些混淆理解,所以可能出现个别分类错误,望老师提出好让我得以改进。附上翻译了我四晚的演讲稿,忍不住吐槽一句,太长了,翻译地我看到奥巴马的演讲就有躲远来的冲动。好在,终于翻完了!!!

负责任的新时代(就职演讲)

2009年1月20日我的同胞们:

今天我站在这里,因为前路的重任而深感卑微,因为你们给予的信任而心怀感激,因为无数先辈的牺牲而记忆深刻。在此,我要感谢布什总统为我们国家作出的贡献,同时也要感谢他在政权交接时表现的慷慨与合作。

如今,已有44位美国人宣读了总统的就职宣言。他们中的有的人是在繁荣昌盛并且四海升平的年代宣读了誓言。然而也有的人是在乌云密布风暴肆虐的年代就职的。在那些艰难的时刻,美国的一路前进不仅仅简单地因为位高权重的领导者的高超技能或是远见卓识,更是因为我们的人民对先祖完美理念的虔诚信奉和对建国文件的忠心耿耿。原来是如此,我们这一代的美国人更必须将此发扬光大。

现如今我们处在水深火热的危机之中,并且我们也对此心知肚明。我们的国家处在战争之中,与我们反抗的敌人是暴力与仇恨的巨大网络。我们的经济受到了严重地削弱,部分原因是人们的贪婪和不负责任造成的,当然也包括我们在做出艰难抉择和创造国家新篇章时犯下的一系列的错误。人们失去了家园,没有了工作,停止了经营。我们的医疗保险异常昂贵,我们的学校让我们不断失望,并且每天都有证据表明我们消耗能源的方式增强了我们的对手的能力却威胁了我们家园的安全。

这些都是危机的信号,并且有证据得以证实。较不易度量但仍值得我们深思的是全国上下国民信心的丧失,从而令我们烦恼的恐惧是担心

美国的衰退将会是不可避免的,而使得我们的下一代必须降低对美国的希望。

今天我要告诉你们,我们所面临的挑战确实存在,这些挑战棘手而又严峻,并且绝不是少数。我们在短时间内不是能轻易战胜它们的。但是美国人民请记住:终有一天我们将战胜这些挑战。

今天,我们积聚在此是因为我们选择了希望,而不是恐惧,我们选择了团结一心,众志成城,而不是纷争与冲突。

为了我们,他们英勇奋战,流血沙场,战死在诸如康科德、葛底斯堡、诺曼底和溪山这些地方。

一次又一次,这些男男女女奋勇拼搏,流血牺牲,辛勤劳动,直到他们的双手皮开肉绽,为的就是让我们过上更好的生活。在他们看来,美国比我们每一个人的雄心壮志的总和还要宏大,比所有人的出身、财富、派系的差异还要强大。

因为我们所见的每一处都有工作等着我们去做。这个国家的经济状况需要我们采取勇敢果断的行动。我们将会行动起来,不仅仅是为了创造新的工作岗位,更是为了为经济的增长打下新的基础。我们将铺路架桥、建设电网和数字网络以满足我们的商业需求并把我们联结在一起。我们将恢复科学本有的地位,运用科学技术的奇迹来提高医疗保

现在,有些人质疑我们追求的目标过于庞大,有些人认为我们现行的体质不能承受如此之多的计划。他们对于历史的记忆太过于短暂了。因为他们忘记了这个国家在过去取得的成绩,忘记了当自由的男男女女的想象力为了同一个目标,勇往直前、无所畏惧地连结在一起所能成就的伟业。

这些愤世嫉俗者不能明白的是,这片脚下的土地早已发生了翻天覆地的变化——那些消耗我们太多精力的陈旧的政治争论早已不再适用。我们今日求解的问题并非是我们的政府太大或是太小,而是它是否能够有效运转。它是否能够帮助家庭成员找到一份收入得体地工作,是否能够考虑到他们能承担地起一份医疗保险,是否能够保证他们在退休之后能够有尊严的生活。如果答案是肯定的话,我们就能继续前行。如果答案是否定的话,我们就必须停下脚步。我们之中管理公共财务的官员要坚定地认为——花对每一分钱,改正不良习惯,光明磊落地从事我们的工作——因为只有这样我们才能在我们的人民和政府之间重建极其重要的信任关系。

摆在我们面前的问题并非是市场到底具有积极地影响或是消极的影响。市场创造财富和扩大自由的力量是无与伦比的。但是这场金融危机警醒了我们,若没有审慎的监管,市场将会失去控制,并且当一个

国家仅仅注重上层阶层,那么这个国家也就不能长久地繁荣下去。我们的经济的成功并不总是依赖于我们的国民生产总值,还依赖于我们的繁荣的普及程度,依赖于我们提供给每一个充满热血的工作者工作机会的能力——我们这么做并非出于慈善之心,而是因为这是我们达到共同富裕的必经之路。

奥巴马获胜演讲全文 President-elect Barack Obama smiles as he gives his acceptance speech at Grant Park in Chicago Tuesday night, Nov. 4, 2008. 以下是奥巴马(Barack Obama)竞选总统成功后在芝加哥演讲准备的讲稿: If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference. It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled – Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America. It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America. I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him and Governor Palin for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead. I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of
