My wife soon had a crazy idea."Let's get a dog," she told me.

I wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea, but agreed.

I mean, what better way to replace a kid that has gone off to college than to get a dog?

When we got to the animal shelter,it seemed like every dog was a pit bull (比特犬).I'd had many bad experiences with pit bulls as a child,so I didn't want to take one of

them home with me.

While I was walking along the rows and rows of cold metal cages,a dog caught my eye.He was scared, and looked like he'd given up on life.

There was only one problem:he was a pit bull.

As he looked at me with his big beautiful eyes,I could see into his soul.I could see how scared he was and that he just wanted a happy life.

I couldn't just walk away ﹣I had to at least go over and look at him.

I approached his cage, and he just sat there, looking at me.

I stuck my finger through the hole in the cage and petted him on the head.I expected him to get mad,but he didn't.

I knew that this dog had never felt love before, and he was enjoying every bit of the love I could give him at that moment.

Tears began to stream down my face because I felt everything that this poor creature was feeling right then.He just wanted to be loved;he just wanted a home and a family. It's been a year since we took the dog home, and our lives have been changed forever. Now,his favorite thing to do is give us kisses with his giant tongue every morning. He is always there to greet us when we come home with a huge smile. He's shown us more love than any other living creature on Earth ever had before.

You're not alone.A study by the National Sleep Foundation says 48% of American adults use devices such as tablets or laptops in bed.

Unlike reading and TV,modern devices are interactive(互动的)rather than passive.Their connectivity to the outside world enters the bedroom.

It appears there is a marked difference between staying up late with a good book or watching television in bed and using smartphones, tablets and laptops. The way we use electronic devices allows them to eat into far more of the time we should be asleep, according to researchers.

"These devices are causing sleep procrastination(拖延)," says Matthew Walker,a professor at the University of California.

"Sending a text message, posting something on Facebook or checking your e﹣mail means you are waiting for a response and revs up your emotional nervous system so that you find it hard to fall asleep."

Ben Carter,a professor at King's College London, conducted a review of 20 studies into the impact of technology on children's sleep patterns, finding even those who did not use phones or other devices before bed but had them in their bedrooms slept less deeply than those who left their devices in another room."Just the presence of the device in their bedrooms was

affecting their sleep," says Carter.

4.(8分)In an era when many parents make efforts to ensure that boys and girls have equal opportunities,a recent study found that boys are paid twice as much allowance (零花钱)as girls for doing weekly chores(家务活).

An analysis of 10,000 families across the US showed that boys earned an average of ﹩

13.80(94 yuan)each week compared with﹩6.71 earned by girls, according to BusyKid,a web platform that allows kids to receive, spend,or invest their allowance."I think this is a wake﹣up call for parents to be aware of what they are paying,to make sure they are being as fair as possible," said Gregg Murset,CEO of BusyKid.According to the analysis, boys averaged more allowance than girls because they were more often assigned chores considered more physically difficult, including cutting the grass.Girls, meanwhile, were more often paid for jobs such as loading the dishwasher.Boys also earned more money because they were paid for things girls were not paid for at all, including showering and brushing their teeth.

In Illinois,Vaishali Patel tries hard to teach her two children that gender shouldn't determine what chores they are assigned or what activities they choose. The parents don't pay their children an allowance, and instead expect them to help with all jobs around the house. But Patel said the children still pick up on old﹣fashioned gender stereotypes (刻板印象)from elsewhere, like when they tell their son to try dance classes in addition to the sports he plays.

"He's like,‘No way am I doing that'," said Patel."Some of that is really hard to influence."

The stereotype can also be seen at Future Investor Clubs of America,a summer camp offered in many US cities to teach financial responsibility and wealth strategies to teens. In the past 21 years,it has consistently enrolled (录取)mostly boys, despite efforts by camp management to recruit girls.

Barbara Risman,a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said that while Americans have come a long way in terms of offering more equal opportunities for men and women, changing mindsets (心态)permanently takes even more time. The best way to counter the patterns,Risman added,is to think about and discuss the way we approach gender roles as often as possible."You can't change behavior you have never noticed," she said.

(1)Why do boys receive more allowance than girls for doing weekly chores?

A.They tend to ask for more payment.

B.They are given more difficult work.

C.They are considered better at housework.

D.They are willing to take on more chores.

(2)The author mentioned Patel's family and Future Investor Clubs of America mainly to show.

A.how gender stereotypes influence what children do

B.the efforts Americans have made for gender equality

C.it's common for children to disagree with their parents

D.boys and girls differ greatly in their career choices

(3)What can be inferred from Risman's words?

A.Americans are proud of how they treat women.

B.It's impossible to change gender stereotypes.

C.Americans don't try to deal with gender stereotypes.

D.More effort is needed to change people's idea of gender roles.

(4)What did Risman suggest people do to fight gender stereotypes?

A.Assign children similar chores.

B.Create more opportunities for girls.

C.Give the problem more attention.

D.Teach children about gender equality.

13.80(94 yuan)each week compared with﹩6.71 earned by girls,according to BusyKid,a

web platform that allows kids to receive, spend,or invest their allowance."I think this is a wake﹣up call for parents to be aware of what they are paying,to make sure they are being as fair as possible," said Gregg Murset,CEO of BusyKid.According to the analysis, boys averaged more allowance than girls because they were

more often assigned chores considered more physically difficult, including cutting the grass.Girls, meanwhile, were more often paid for jobs such as loading the dishwasher.Boys also earned more money because they were paid for things girls were not paid for at all, including showering and brushing their teeth.

(1)Why do boys receive more allowance than girls for doing weekly chores?B A.They tend to ask for more payment.

B.They are given more difficult work.

C.They are considered better at housework.

D.They are willing to take on more chores.

(2)The author mentioned Patel's family and Future Investor Clubs of America mainly to show A.

A For the business traveler who's all about efficiency: check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum trouble. When you're pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process. ◆Marriott Detroit Airport Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I've tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in”virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk. ◆Hyatt Regency Minneapolis I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. The kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about 3 minutes. When I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out: An agent meets you in the lobby with, an iPad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line. ◆Radisson LaCrosse The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. At a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a bar code by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you can scan the bar code to get your key without any other steps required. It's super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well. 1.What does the word ‘infuriate', in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A.annoy B.remind C.amuse D.impress

高考英语模拟试卷(一) (选自于唐山市2012-2013学年度高三年级第一次摸底考试有改动)第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) A Everything was put neatly into my suitcase. I’m a flight attendant. I’m so organized, my half of the closet could be a display at The Container Store. My h usband’s half of the closet? Ju st thinking about it made my head ache. I carried my suitcase downstairs. Bill was in the kitchen cooking. Looking at the messy kitchen, I shouted, “Why do you have to be so messy?” Bill looked hurt, “What?” I sighed and left for the airport. On my last flight, an elderly couple had the seats in my section. They held hands during takeoff. Later I caught them looking into each other’S eyes. Something about that look was familiar. Then I realized: it was the look Bill and I had worn in our wedding photographs. I couldn’t resist asking them about the secret of their long-lasting marriage. “Have fun together”,the man said, “and never take each other for granted.” Her words circled in my head long after we landed. Bill wasn’t perfect. But then, was I? I kept complaining about his messiness and forgot his kindness, his ability to see the bright side of every situation 一qualities that ran so much deeper, the reasons I had married him in the first place. I took out my cell phone and called Bill. “I miss you already.” I said. “I miss you too, Kim,” he said. As soon as my flights were over, I rushed home. Bill met me at the door. “I have a surprise for you.” he said and led me into the kitchen. I glanced around the room. He really had worked hard. In spite of the fingerprints on that microwave door, I could see our reflection in it: my husband and I, our smiles glowing with love for each other, just like in our wedding photos. 1. Why did Kim get so angry with her husband? A. She found his weaknesses one morning. B. Sh e didn’t love him any more. C. He left things in an untidy state. D.
