Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of the physical

books (纸质书) was coming to an end. The objects that had been the

companions (伙伴) of millions of 16 for hundreds of years

were going to die out. Soon, we’d all be reading on little electronic

screens and laughing at the memory of places called ―17 ‖ and

―bookshops‖.2·1·c·n·j·y

But it seems not true about the idea of the death of the physical

books. At least in the UK, as The Guardian noted, sales of e-books are falling while sales of physical books are 18 . More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the most physical books. More than 60 percent of 16-to-24-year-olds 19 print books to e-books. There are many reasons and the most popular one i s: ―I would like to 20 the product.‖

Books become very personal objects to reading lovers. It often starts 21 they get the books. Many buyers of books like to write down their names on the inside cover when they’ve bought one. And we 22 books around with us everywhere. 21*cnjy*com

If there’s a mark made on the pages from coffee or food, it doesn’t matter. These small 23 make our books even more personal. It’s just like readers of physical books make friends with them.

The ―friendship‖ 24 people develop with books isn’t just about feelings. Research has shown that readers remember more information from reading physical books than electronic ones.

However, ther e’s no25 that e-books are here to stay. They aren’t simply a ―here today, gone tomorrow‖ thing. But it’s also certain that physical books, which have been in production since the fifteenth century, are here to stay, too.

China is famous for its food and has already given me many memorable experiences. There are lots of Chinese restaurants in Australia, but I was told that they

were very different from what I would find in China. So I had no idea

what I would be eating when I moved here.

And now, almost eight months since I arr ived, I’m still

discovering the strange and wonderful world of Chinese food. And I

haven’t seen any local restaurants serving prawn crackers (虾片) or

sweet and sour pork which I enjoyed in Australia.

Perhaps my most memorable meal so far was at a traditional hot pot restaurant. I have eaten plenty of hot pots before, but this one was really, really hot. My friends watched with interest as I tried duck blood, duck neck and duck intestines (肠). I would try anything once, so I was happy to give it a go. But I don’t think I’ll be trying duck blood or intestines again.

Walking through Wan gfujing’s night market in Beijing was another interesting experi ence.

I tried scorpion (蝎子) on a stick, sea urchin (海胆) and many other strange-looking animals. One thing I have noticed in China is that people love to eat everything on sticks.

But the thing I lik e most about Chinese food is that you don’t have to search very hard to find it. There are people selling delicious things on almost every corner, and there is always a restaurant nearby in Beijing.

It’s almost im possible to go hungry in China. The only question is: What should I try next?

28. What does the word ―here‖ in Paragraph 1 refer to (所指) ?

A. China.

B. Australia.

C. The USA.

D. England.

29. The writer tried duck blood, duck neck and duck intestines because ______.

A. he thought they were delicious

B. he wanted to give everything a try

30. From the passage, we can know ______.

A. the writer really loves to eat everything on sticks

B. there is always a restaurant on every corner of China

C. it’s hard to find prawn crackers or sweet and sour pork in Australia

D. the writer seldom gets hungry in China because of so much delicious food

Do you find it hard to learn math and history? A recent study carried out by scientists from University of London, may be of help to you. They found that teenagers could get higher marks in math if they studied in the morning and better grades in history if they were taught in the afternoon.

The researchers did a study at a secondary school in Bulgaria over nine years. The results showed that when teenagers had math classes earlier in the day, they scored on average (平均) 7 percent higher in tests than when taught in the afternoon. Lower-ability students did worst when they were studying math in the afternoon.

In history, students taught in the afternoon scored on average 6 percent higher than when they were taught in t he morning. However, it doesn’t work for other subjects such as languages or geography.【版权所有:21教育】

Velichka Dimitrova, leader of the study, said the findings show that we do better at different times of the day.

―In the morning, our brains are better and fresher, so we are better at doing something that repeats a lot like problem solving, where we require more speed and attention,‖ Dimitrova told The Telegraph.

―In the afternoo n, it seems that this process (过程) slows down. On the other hand, history is better suitable for the afternoon, when we are more creative and open to discussion,‖ she said.

Subjects such as foreign languages require both memory and repetition (重复), and they also need people to be creative. This is perhaps why the time of day has no influence on learning.

Time-of-day effects such as those are believed to be connected to the body clock. This is the system in our bodies that controls when we need to sleep. Some schools in the US and UK have tried out later school starting times for teenagers, whose body clocks change as they grow into adults.

Dimitrova believes schools should take this chance to improve students’ performance just by changing their timetables.

31. According to the study, students taught in the morning do better in ______.

A. history

B. English

C. geography

D. math

32. It is believed that the time-of-day effects have something to do with a student’s ______.

A. age

B. hobby

C. body clock

D. learning habit

33. History is better suitable for the afternoon because ______.

A. it is an easy subject for students to learn

B. we are more creative and open to discussion

C. our brains are better and fresher in the afternoon

D. it’s easier to pay more attention to the work we are doing

34. Dimitrova is sure that ______.

A. it is better to learn history and math in the morning

B. changing timetables properly can improve students’ performance

C. different times of a day have some influence on learning languages

D. it makes no difference for lower-ability students to learn math in the afternoon

35. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The good advice on managing a school.

B. The importance of learning history and math.

C. The good ways to get higher scores in history and math.

D. The influence of timetables on history and math learning.

I’m not the kind of mother who normally brushes and styles her daughter’s hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.

But today, I put a chair outside and let my daughter Sally sit on it. She was sitting high with her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower, and her messy hair behind her back.

I realized she was taking in every touch from my hands. It was the last time for a week that our bodies would connect. Today, I would send Sally away for a week of summer camp. She didn’t ask to go. This was all my idea. She’s nearly 12, and I notice that I’m with my child nearly 24 hours a day.

Living on a farm without any neighbors, I’ve chosen a life that is quieter than a usual family’s. But instead of requiring space away from me, Sally has increasingly depended on me.

What worries me m ost is that she has become a ―mini-me‖. She follows my hobbies, my dreams, and my opinions. And that was why I pulled her to the summer camp, a nearby wilderness (荒野) camp called Hawk Circle.

After we ate, I drove Sally to Hawk Circle. Once there, we got a tour of the grounds and were introduced to other campers. Sally stood by the group of children, holding my hand, horror in her eyes, trying to work up the courage to join a game of soccer. ―I need you for a few more minutes,‖ she t old me, holding my hand tightly (紧紧地).

I pulled away and walked up to one of the camp’s workers. ―Excuse me,‖ I s aid loudly, ―I’d like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could hel p her meet a few of these kids.‖ He came over to talk to Sally, and I kissed her and then I disappeared before she realized I was

gone.

On my way home, I felt a piece of my soul had been taken from my body. I began to shake. The tears (泪水) came down my face. It took every bit of my strength to keep driving forward.

When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. I thought to myself, ―I want Sally to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow. I don’t want to see only mysel f in my child. I want to learn who she is. If I don’t set her free, I fear I’ll never really meet her real personality.‖

After 12 years of being together, I want to finally meet my daughter for the first time.

We’ve probab ly all met someone who likes to show off about where he or she has been. To some people, traveling is all about how many places one has been to. But luckily, the ol d ―been there, seen that‖ mode is changing.

Las t year’s travel trend (趋势) was ―experiential travel‖. This is where tourists look for ways to get to know local culture and meet local people so they feel less like an outsider.

So what about this year? Can creative tourists get even more out of their traveling experience?

Transformative travel

Transformative (起改变作用的) travel is much like ―experiential travel‖, but takes it a step further.

It usually goes through three steps – you go to a place that has a very different background from where you live, you learn wisdom from the new culture and the people you meet, and

finally you go back home and use the knowledge in your own lives. This last step is how the ―transformation‖ is completed and what separates transfo rmative travel from experiential travel.

Go green

One way to plan a green trip is to travel a shorter distance, which can reduce your carbon footprint (碳排放量). ―One trans-Atlantic flight equals a year’s worth of driving, so taking a trip in this way can help protect the environment,‖ suggested Warren, according to US News.

Another way to go green in your travel plans is to choose a place that will be helped most from your trip. For example, places like Nepal will enjoy an increase in its local economy (经济) through the trip.

Disappearing sights

Some sights at risk of disappearing are also welcoming an increasing number of tourists.

Everett Potter, a USA Today writer, says that the Arctic and Antarctic have attracted (吸引) more and more tourists since they are being greatly influenced by climate (气候) change.

Another top sight is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I t’s believed that the reef will be seriously harmed in just a few years because of pollution and global warming. Travelers look forward to seeing the coral (珊瑚) ―before it’s gone or completely changed‖, Potter told US News.

The changing 56 trends

Before To some people, traveling means the 57 of places they have been to.

Last year Experiential travel Tourists look for ways to better understand the local culture so they can be 58 like local people.

This year Transformative

travel

●Going to a place 59 a different background.

●Learning wisdom from the new culture and people.

●60 home and using the knowledge in your own

lives .
