Look at the sentences from the passage and answer the questions.1 In the fall ofourfinal year, our mood changed. Why does the passage begin with a time expression? The use of the time expression, together with the past tense, is a signal that this is a narrative with a sequence of events. The word our indicates that this is a story of personal experience.2 But there was something else. What is the purpose of this short sentence? This indicates that studying for the final exams was not the only concern of the students. So it is a transition from studying for final exams to the next topic getting a job after graduation.3 I went home at Thanksgiving ...Why does the writer change from we to I?Because this changes the focus onto the writer as an individual. The we paragraphs are general background to the main narrative about thc individual, which is coming.4 "So?" he said. What is the effect of the change to direct speech? This change to direct speech opens a moment-by-moment dialogue. This slows down the narrative of events but gives a good impression of how the writer found it difficult to say what he wanted to do and how the father made few comments.5 Crabs fascinated me.How does the focus change with this sentence? The topic shifts to crabs. The sentence also arouses the readers' interest - we expect some fascinating new information ab6ut crabs here. Later, we realize how the topic of crabs,is connected with the son finding a job, and the crabs' behaviour leads the father to give memorable advice.6 My father started the motor and we set off back home.Is this an effective conclusion? Why / Why not?Yes, we don't know what happens next, but the implication is fairly clear that the father would support the son's idea of travel and of being a writer. It makes a better conclusion not to say it explicitly, as it leaves a lot of room for personal interpretation.10 Work in pairs and answer the questions.1 What sort of relationship do the father and son have? The son seems afraid of being criticized for his ideas about a career and expects resistance from his father. However, the father actually supports what his son wants, but he makes him think about it by watching the crabs. So at the beginning we feel their relationship may not be good, but later it becomes clear that they have a good relationship and, in fact, their relationship has improved by catching crabs together.2 Do you think the son respects his father? The son does respect his father, and the crab-catching episode adds to this respect because the father finds a good way of showing support to his son and making him think more about his plans.3 Do you think the father understands his son?Yes, because he says, "I kind of wish I'd done that when I was your age." Also, his way of teaching his son - through observing crabs - shows that he understands his son well.4 What is the father trying to tell his son by showing him the crabs? He is teaching his son not to follow conventional expectations and peer pressure. He tells his son not to be pulled back by others, and to find out more about himself- what he enjoys, where his interests and skills are, how he wants to work, because if he doesn't figure these things out, he will never be happy.5 How successful do you think the "crab story" is?It is successful in showing the father-son relationship through catching crabs and it makes readers think about not being pulled back by others.6 Is the father pleased that his son wants to be a writer? He doesn't say so, but it seems he wanted to travel or write when he was young himself. His use of the words, "Interesting idea" and "Interesting choice", could be ambiguous, or may show support. The way he says "We've never had a writer in the family" does seem to be positive. So he's pleased but he doesn't want to say it directly.Developing critical thinking11 Work in pairs and discuss the questions.1 How important is it to be ambitious in life?It is a complicated question. On the one hand, it seems good to be ambitious because most people want to be successful and having an ambition probably makes you work harder for your goals and that's good. On the other hand, we feel some reservations. Some people are ambitious to be extremely rich, famous or powerful. We really wonder whether these are the most important things, because some ambitious people seem to work only for themselves, so they work against other people rather than for or with others. On balance, we suppose it is important to be ambitious, but it depends on exactly what kind of ambition you are thinking of.2 Is being ambitious a positive part of personality?Well, this is one of those qualities which are OK as long as you don't go to extremes. We think it probably depends on how ambition is related to the rest of your personality. What we mean is this: If a person only focuses on ambition it can get out of proportion - too much ambition can lead to all sorts of negative aspects of a personality. But being ambitious can be very positive if it is related to other positive qualities like wanting to make an effort and do your best with honesty and sincerity, and also to help your family, other people and your country. So our conclusion is: Yes, ambition is a positive part of personality as long as it is related to other positive qualities.2 How much time should students spend planning their future?Well, if you don't spend any time planning a future, it may never happen. If you spend too much time planning it, it won't happen either, because you won't actually be doing anything about it, only thinking. We think the father in Catching crabs is right: You need to spend some time thinking about what you enjoy and what interests you, where your skills are, and then plan to try some jobs in those areas in order to discover what you are good at and what makes you happy. We think, as students, this is as much a matter of thinking and planning as of trying out different things, for example, doing part-time jobs and holiday work to get experience. So we conclude by saying that planning and doing go together, really. Is it part of a university's role to help students choose a career?Universities are supposed to teach students advanced knowledge and skills within different disciplines, to help them develop their thinking, creativity and awareness of citizenship, cultures and peoples in the world. Of course, helping students choose a career is not the same as getting them work. It is more a matter of helping them identify what they are good at and how their majors may prepare them for different professions. We think universities can help us choose a career by providing information about different professions and jobs, and by inviting professionals and employers in different fields to universities to talk to students. So, to conclude, yes, we think this is part of a university's role, a small but important part.。

Bhutan did not introduce TV until 1999, and is the last country that is open to TV and the Internet. Its mobile phone and Internet penetrations are as low as 30% and 5% respectively, almost out of tune with the modernized world. Now that the majority of its people have no mobile phones and no access to the Internet, they have little odds of being phubbers or night persons. While the other countries are striving desperately to develop economy and boost GDP at all costs, what Bhutan pursues is GNH (Gross National Happiness). They are willing to take advantage of modern technology, but would do it at their own pace, according to their own needs and at their own proper time. Although likewise thirsting for economic prosperity, Bhutan refuses to realize it at the price of their cherished tradition and culture.Unit 2中国的科举制度( the imperial examination system in China) 最早始于隋朝,历经1300多年。

What can you do to help establish a harmonious society as a student?▆Sample Essay for Task 1:One weekend morning, while walking on a bustling street with a light heart, I was suddenly overtaken by a startling moan. Turning around, I discovered the sound was coming from a black mass in a corner. “What’s that?” My heart pounded heavily. I went up and saw a human being, alive but in a dreadful state. He was crouching on the ground with deformed hands and legs, mumbling something. He had obviously lost the normal ability to move and work. A dirty plate was placed in front the miserable-looking man, in which there were some coins and small notes. As my eyes were drifting away from him, his eyes caught mine suddenly. What eyes they were! Filled with misery and expectation, they were looking straight at me. He was unable to speak, but I seemed to hearhis pleading voice and read his despairing mind. His look seemed to be telling me about his hard life and his longing for help. For a while, I was at a loss what to do. Should I drop some coins in the plate like some other passers-by or turn away in indifference? I recalled news reports about men pretending to be beggars, who were actually healthy and able to work. Could this be another one of those scams? But the beggar was there, groaning and living. Then something seemed to hit me hard. I drew a five-yuan note from my pocket, droppedit in his dirty plate and walked away quickly in silence.“No good deed is too small.” Maybe we need to bear this saying in mind.▆Sample Essay for Task 2:We are living in a world of distrust. We live behind cold security bars; we do not talk to strangers, let alone go out of our way to help them; we live in fear of fake products. In short, fear and feelings of insecurity fill the environment we live in.All this greatly harms our society. Growing up in such an environment, we tend to feel isolated and care only about ourselves. If things go on like this, ‘trust’, ‘teamwork’, and ‘harmony’ will eventually become terms unheard of.In my opinion, trusting others and being trustworthy are the two basic principles that we should follow if we want to improve human relationships. We may not be in a position to change others, but we can change the way others see us by winning their trust in us. Write an essay (of about 150 words) to share your ideas with your classmates. The following hints may be of some help:a. What is meant by “thinking positively”?b. How can we keep an optimistic and positive attitude?▆Sample Letter for Task 1:Dear Weihua,I know you are still feeling upset about your results in the college entrance examination. I’ve just read an article about how pessimistic and optimistic thoughts can affect our behaviour and I’m now sending you a copy, hoping that it will help you step out of the shadows.Naturally, failing the college entrance examination can be very depressing, yet if you continue to dwell on the past, you will never be able to pick yourself up and focus on what is more important for now and the future. Life is full of trials and anyone may suffer setbacks. We must take an optimistic attitude towards the things we have to deal with. Optimism and positive thinking are powerful forces. Good things do come true if we picture them often. Please do have confidence in your potential. Just work hard and prepare for another chance. You will make it.Yours,Janet(152 words)▆Sample Essay for Task 2:Thinking positively means allowing your mind to be filled with optimistic feelings, and always hoping for the best though still aware of the difficulties that might be involved. The human mind is powerful; thoughts of optimism and pessimism can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Though it might seem impossible to some, positive thinking and success actually have a cause-and-result relationship. The reason is that a person with positive thinking will always broadcast goodwill and confidence and that kind of radiating attitude will take a hold on everybody.Gradually, people’s attitude will shift towards more trust and respect. This not only opens up moreopportunities for the individual, but it also feeds back emotionally, and the cycle continues.Though the shaping of a positive or negative personality often happens subconsciously, it is possible to control such processes consciously. A person can try visualizing favourable situations, whether it is remembering a contest won as a child or imagining getting that job offer so long sought after. Over time circumstances will change accordingly. To her disappointment, her parents strongly opposed her career choice, because the cost of her education would be too high for the poor family, and they were worried about the job opportunities for a cartoon artist. However, Li Hui would not change her mind. She worked hard to perfect her skills and searched persistently for ways to realise her dream. Just before she finished high school, the chance came: a famous art school was holding a cartoon drawing competition. The first three winners would be given a scholarship to study cartoon drawing at the school. Li Hui told herself not to let the chance slip through her fingers. She readily participated and won the second place. She is now studying there and I feel certain that her dream will come true. (156 words)2) People may have different opinions about the key factors for success. Write a short essay (of about 150words) and share your opinions with your classmates.Sample essay:In my opinion, before a person becomes successful, he or she should fully understand the basic elements of success: competence, determination and optimism. For a person to succeed, he or she has to face great competition and excel in his or her chosen career. The person needs to demonstrate and prove his or her competence in dealing with problems. Without competence, the person can neither stand out among the crowd nor attract the attention of those who hold the keys to the doors of opportunity and advancement.Yet ability alone cannot guarantee success. Often enough, things do not go the way we have planned and failure is unavoidable no matter how intelligent or capable we may be. In such cases one needs to remain firm and optimistic, always believing that hard work will eventually pay off. If the person gives up halfway, success will never knock at the door. Nonetheless, doing exercise regularly can help you live a healthier and happier life. Jogging is a great way to get at least part of the exercise your body needs, and most healthy individuals are capable of jogging without the need to buy special exercise equipment. There are a few jogging tips to keep in mind if you plan to take advantage of these benefits. The first tip is that running should ideally be an aerobic exercise. Starting off, you should find a pace at which you can jog for about half an hour. Try to keep this pace each time you jog until you have worked your way up to a full hour. Then, if you still want to keep building endurance, begin to increase your pace. Always be careful not to push yourself too hard; doing so can be dangerous, especially if you are jogging alone.Once you have gained enough strength and endurance and started to consider increasing your pace, however, you should consider other options first. Anyone who knows great jogging tips can tell you that jogging, though great exercise, is not always good to your knees. Consider jogging on a route that takes you up more hills if you are looking for a more intense workout. Running downhill is actually worse for your knees than running on a flat surface. In addition, it is important to be hydrated when you jog, but you should not have a stomach full of water. Wait at least thirty minutes after drinking any fluids or eating to start jogging. Also be careful jogging in extreme heat or cold. If it is hot, drink extra water and stop to rest if you feel faint. If it is cold, make sure your hands and feet are protected and try to breathe through your nose as much as possible to warm your breath before it reaches your lungs. Jogging can be a great form of exercise, but you should always do it safely.Part III Read and ExploreText ASection A Discovering the Main IdeasExercise 1: Answer the following questions with the information contained in Text A.1) Why wasn’t Owens worried in the face of Hitler’s ―master race‖ theory?2) What made Owens angry with Hitler? What was the consequence of his anger?3) How did Luz Long help Owens?4) How was it that Owens and Long formed a real friendship during the Games although theywere rivals in the competition?5) Why did Owens think Long was the perfect example of what Pierre de Coubertin hadconceived of as the spirit of the Games?▇ Answers for reference:1) He had been well-prepared and had performed very well especially in the running broadjump. In fact, a year before, as a sophomore at Ohio State University, he had set the world’s record of 26 feet 8-1/4 inches. That’s why he was confident and very sure of his success in this event.2) Hitler had intentionally kept the world in the dark about an excellent athlete by the name ofLuz Long, who had a good chance of winning the running broad jump. If Long won, Hitler would prove to the world that Aryans were better than any other races. Hitler’s intention angered Owens. The consequence of his anger was that he made mistakes twice in the three qualifying jumps.3) Long reassured Owens that he didn’t believe in Hitler’s theory. Then he offered Owens auseful tip to avoid fouling again in the third qualifying jump.4) Despite the fact that they were fierce competitors, Long helped Owens qualify for the finals, which meant Long himself might miss the gold medal. Then they poured out their hearts, sharing their views on life and sports. When Owens won, Long congratulated him heartily and sincerely. Their friendship was thus forged.5) Because what Long did for Owens well illustrates the Olympic spirit advocated by Pierre deCoubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. According to him, the important thing in the Games is not winning but taking part. This spirit is also true of life, the essence of which is not conquering but fighting well.Exercise 2: Text A can be divided into three parts with the paragraph number(s) of each part provided as follows. Write down the main idea of each part.Part Para(s). Main IdeaOne1-5 Jesse Owens was determined to get gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games, especially in the running broad jump where he had already set the world record. Due to his anger with Hitler and the tension arising from it, however, he fouled twice in the first two qualifying jumps. He would probably fail to qualify for the finals.Two6-18 With Luz Long’s help, Owens overcame his tension. He qualified for the finals and won the gold medal eventually. Major rivals as they were, they formed a true friendship despite the anger of Hitler.Three 19 Owens cherished his friendship with Long dearly and in the meantime he realized that Long perfectly symbolized the Olympic spirit—not winning but taking part.Section B In-Depth StudyAt the 1936 Olympic Games, Jesse Owens, a black athlete from America, amazed the world by winning four gold medals, including the one for his achievement in the broad jump. Now Owens tells this story about putting differences aside for the spirit of the Games. His well-cherished friendship with the German broad jumper Luz Long bears out the Olympic spirit, which is, in Pierre de Coubertin’s words, “The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”My Greatest Olympic PrizeJesse Owens1 It was the summer of 1936. The Olympic Games were being held in Berlin. Because Adolf Hitler childishly insisted that his performers were members of a ―master race,‖ nationalistic feelings were at an all-time high.2 I wasn’t too worried about all this. I’d trained, sweated and disciplined myself for six years, with the Games in mind. While I was going over on the boat, all I could think about was taking home one or two of those gold medals. I had my eye especially on the running broad jump. A year before, as a sophomore at Ohio State University, I’d set the world’s record of 26 feet 8-1/4 inches. Everyone kind of expected me to win that Olympic event hands down.3 I was in for a surprise. When the time came for the broad-jump trials, I was startled to see a tall boy hitting the pit at almost 26 feet on his practice leaps! He turned out to be a German named Luz Long. I was told that Hitler had kept him under wraps, evidently hoping to win the jump with him.4 I guessed that if Long won, it would add some new support to the Nazis’ Aryan-superiority theory. After all, I am a Negro. A little hot under the collar about Hitler’s ways, I determined to go out there and really show Der Fuhrer and his master race who was superior and who wasn’t.5 An angry athlete is an athlete who will make mistakes, as any coach will tell you. I was no exception. On the first of my three qualifying jumps, I leaped from several inches beyond the take-off board for a foul. On the second jump, I fouled even worse. ―Did I come 3,000 miles for this?‖ I thought bitterly. ―To foul out of the trials and make a fool of myself?‖6 Walking a few yards from the pit, I kicked disgustedly at the dirt. Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to look into the friendly blue eyes of the tall German broad jumper. He had easily qualified for the finals on his first attempt. He offered me a firm handshake.7 ―Jesse Owens, I’m Luz Long. I don’t think we’ve met.‖ He spoke English well, though witha German twist to it.8 ―Glad to meet you,‖ I said. Then, trying to hide my nervousness, I added, ―How are you?‖9 ―I’m fine. The question is: How are you?‖10 ―What do you mean?‖ I asked.11 ―Something must be eating you,‖ he said—proud the way foreigners are when they’ve mastered a bit of American slang. ―You should be able to qualify with your eyes closed.‖12 ―Believe me, I know it,‖ I told him—and it felt good to say that to someone.13 For the next few minutes we talked together. I didn’t tell Long what was ―eating‖ me, but he seemed to understand my anger, and he took pains to reassure me. Although he’d been schooled in the Nazi youth movement, he didn’t believe in the Aryan-supremacy business any more than I did. We laughed over the fact that he really looked the part, though. An inch taller than I, he hada lean, muscular frame, clear blue eyes, blond hair and a strikingly handsome, chiseled face. Finally, seeing that I had calmed down somewhat, he pointed to the take-off board.14 ―Look,‖ he said. ―Why don’t you draw a line a few inches in back of the board and aim at making your take-off from there? You’ll be sure not to foul, and you certainly ought to jump far enough to qualify. What does it matter if you’re not first in the trials? Tomorrow is what counts.‖15 Suddenly all the tension seemed to ebb out of my body as the truth of what he said hit me. Confidently, I drew a line a full foot in back of the board and proceeded to jump from there. I qualified with almost a foot to spare.16 That night I walked over to Luz Long’s room in the Olympic village to thank him. I knew that if it hadn’t been for him I probably wouldn’t be jumping in the finals the following day. We sat in his quarters and talked for two hours—about track and field, ourselves, the world situation,a dozen other things.17 When I finally got up to leave, we both knew that a real friendship had been formed. Luz would go out to the field the next day trying to beat me if he could. But I knew that he wanted me to do my best—even if that meant my winning.18 As it turned out, Luz broke his own past record. In doing so, he pushed me on to a peak performance. I remember that at the instant I landed from my final jump—the one which set the Olympic record of 26 feet 5-5/16 inches—he was at my side, congratulating me. Despite the fact that Hitler glared at us from the stands not a hundred yards away, Luz shook my hand hard—and it wasn’t a fake―smile with a broken heart‖ sort of grip, either.19 You can melt down all the gold medals and cups I have, and they couldn’t be a plating on the 24-carat friendship I felt for Luz Long at that moment. I realized then, too, that Luz was the perfect example of what Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, must have had in mind when he said, ―The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.‖▇课文参考译文我最珍贵的奥运奖牌杰西·欧文斯1 那是1936年的夏天。
