With the pace of life continuing to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be .A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.

The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight" and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.

56. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because_____.

A. they do not know how to enjoy themselves

B. they do not believe that relaxation is important for health

C. they are travelling fast all the time

D. they are becoming busier with their work

D. having control over performance

A. We can find some ways to avoid stress

B. Stress is always harmful to people

C. It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work.

D. Different people can withstand different amounts of stress

59.In Paragraph 3 "such a reaction" refers back to_______.

A. "making a choice between 'flight' or 'fight'"

B. "reaction to stress both chemically and physically"

C. "responding to crises quickly"

D. "losing heart at the signs difficulties"

60.What does the author think of stress?

A. Stress is a bad thing.

B. Different people can withstand the same amount of stress.

C. A certain amount of stress is not a bad thing.

D.Our health will become endangered if we cannot remove stress.

B

Nowadays, the food we eat seems to have great effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures.

That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, about 68 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cow. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

61. What is the best possible title of the passage?

A. Drug and Food

B. Cancer and Health

C. Food and Health

D. Health and Drug

62.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Drugs are always given to animals for medical reasons

B. Some of the additives in our food are added to the food itself and some are given to the living animals

C. Researchers have known about the potential dangers of food additives for over thirty-five years.

D. Food may cause forty percent of cancer in world.

63. How has science done something harmful to mankind?

A. Because of science, diseases caused by polluted food have been virtually eliminated.

B. It has caused a lack of information concerning the value of food.

C. Because of the application of science, some potentially harmful substances have been added to food.

D. The scientists have preserved the color of meats, but not of vegetables.

64. What are nitrates used for?

A. They preserve flavor in packaged foods.

B. They preserve the color of meats.

C. They are the objects of research.

D. They cause the animals to become fatter.

65. The word 'carcinogenic' most nearly means '_____'.

A. trouble-making

B. color-retaining

C. money-making

D. cancer-causing

C

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly held image(印象)of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past.” We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seen to be about their families,” said one member of the research team.” They’re expected to be rebellious(叛逆的) and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation(商议) and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends.” My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-years-old Daniel Lazall.”I always tell them when L’m going out clubbing. As long as th ey know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Crome, who is now 21,agrees.”Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. Bu t I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenagers rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments,” Our surpr ise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over.”

66.What is the popular images of teenagers today?

A. They worry about school

B. They dislike living with their parents

C. They have to be locked in to avoid troubles

D. They quarrel a lot with other family members

67.The study shows that teenagers don’t want to ___

A. share family responsibility

B. cause trouble in their families

C. go boating with their family

D. make family decisions

https://www.doczj.com/doc/a85862281.html,pared with parents of 30 years ago, today’s parents___.

A. go to clubs more often with their children

B. are much stricter with their children

C. care less about their children’s life

D. give their children more freedom

69.According to the authour,teenage rebellion____.

A. may be a false belief

B. is common nowadays

C. existed only in the 1960s

D. resulted from changes in families

70.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Negotiation in family

B. Education in family

C. Harmony in family

D. Teenage trouble in family

D

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics, but sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.

Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.

The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.

It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you

think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.

The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍) yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!

71. You need to build a positive self-image when you.

A. dare to challenge yourself

B. feel it hard to change yourself

C. are unconfident about yourself

D. have a high opinion of yourself

72.According to the passage, our self-images .

A.have positive effects

B.are probably untrue

C.are often changeable

D.have different functions

73.How should you change your self-image according to the passage?

B.To make your life successful.

C.To understand your own world.

D.To change the way you think.

74.What is the passage mainly about?

A.How to prepare for your success.

[1]A program in the United States brings scientists and engineers into elementary schools to teach teachers more about how to teach science.

[2]Dave Weiss is a retired engineer. One day each week he volunteers at Georgian Forest Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland, near Washington. He, who is so enthusiastic and so much fun with the kids, works with teacher Fred Tenyke on science projects for ten years.

[3]Student Jada Lockwood says she enjoys Mr. Weiss' visits to her classroom. She likes the drawings he uses to explain scientific ideas.

[6]American fifteen-year-olds scored about average in science among countries that took part in testing by the OECD in 2009. The OECD is the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

[7]Dave Weiss says he is concerned about such results, but hopeful for the future for American students learning science. Fred Tenkye thinks volunteers like Dave Weiss are helping students do that. "And if you can develop a passion for science, then eventually the grades and the test scores, then that will follow and increase, too." he said.

Dear Mr Wang,

I’m very excited to write to express my thanks to you. I am now a freshman of Beijing University, which I have been dreaming about. Mr Wang, I still remember the days when you taught me English. My English has been improved greatly because of your creative work. However, at one time, the pressure of examinations, too much homework and the high expectations made me depressed. I was tired of the warning that if I didn’t do my best, I wouldn’t have the chance to go to college. Thanks for your encourage ment; if not, I wouldn’t have realized my dream. And now I really understand you. I wish more and more of your students could go to their ideal colleges. Are you still so busy? How I miss you!

Look forward to hearing/Hoping to hear from you soon.
