Dr. Ellen Bronson of the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore alw a ys w a nted to w o rk w i th animals. Unlike many animal-loving little girls, though, her first idea w a s to be a naturalist. If a naturalist is someone w h o sits in the w o ods and observes an i mals and takes notes, then that’s exactly w h at she w a s doing at the time. Dr. Bronson grew up “in the middle of now h ere”, and her parents didn’t let her w a tch TV. “So I spent a lot of time hanging out in the w o ods because there w a s not a lot to do otherw i se,” she says. “I had a funny notebook that my parents still have, w h ere each page is about a certain animal.”

When she got a little older, being an animal doctor seemed like a better choice than w o rking w i th animals in the forest, and the success in giving medical help to them satisfied her hugely, but she says that even the cases that don’t w o rk out as w ell can be meaningful. “Y ou also have the failures, w h ich are hard at the time, but they help not just you but the w h ole zoo learn,” She says.

And, of course, another advantage of the job is getting to w o rk w i th really cool animals. “I really like the animals that feed on meat — they’re very tough, and you can get them through hard times,” she says.

Finally, another advantage of her job is how often she gets to w ork w ith an animal over its life. “We’re there doing medical examination w hen they’re born, w e w atch them grow up,” she says. “And w e w atch them as they age. Once w h en I w a s facing a decision that involved high risk, I w e nt to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then w rote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave – and mighty (强大的) forces w ill come to your aid.

Those w o rds made me see clearly that w h en I had fallen short in the past, it w a s seldom because I had tried and failed. It w as usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, w h enever I had plunged into deep w a ter, forced by courage or circumstance, I had alw a ys been able to sw i m until I got my feet on the ground again.

Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you are sure you c an eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential pow ers w e possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas – even physical strength

greater than most of us realize.

Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, w as an excellent football player, even though he w eighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, w h o had nothing but me betw e en him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I w a s so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet ( 子弹) – and stopped him cold.”

Boldness – a w i llingness to extend yourself to the extreme – is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there w i ll be setbacks ( 挫折) and disappointments

in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person w h o tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person w h o tries to do nothing and succeeds.

So, alw a ys try to live a little bit beyond your abilities – and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.

28. Why w a s the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?

A. He faced huge risks.

B. He lacked mighty forces.

C. Fear prevented him from trying.

D. Failure blocked his w a y to success.

29. What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?

A. Sw a llow more than you can digest.

B. Act slightly above your abilities.

C.

Develop more mysterious pow e rs. D. Learn to make creative decisions.

30. What w a s especially important for Tim’s successful defense in the football game?

A. His physical strength.

B. His basic skill.

C. His real fear.

D. His spiritual force.

31. What is the author ’s purpose in w r iting this passage?

A. To encourage people to be courageous.

B. To advise people to build up physical pow e r.

C.

To tell people the w a ys to guarantee success.

D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.

D

The days of having to carry a phone charger everyw here could soon be over. Michigan researchers have revealed a major breakthrough in harvesting energy from human motion. They say it could lead to smartphones pow e red for a w e ek by the motion of a sw i pe (重击).

Michigan State University’s low -cost devic e, know n as a nanogenerator, has already been tested. Scientists success fully operated an LCD touch screen, a bank of 20 LED lights and a flexible keyboard, all w ith a simple touching or pressing motion and w ithout the aid of a battery. The groundbreaking findings, published in the journal Nano Energy, suggest “We’re on the path tow ard w earable devices pow ered by human motion,” said Nelson Sepulveda, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and lead researcher of the project.

“What I foresee, relatively soon, is the capability of not having to charge your cell phone for an entire w eek, for example, because that energy w ill be produced by your movement,” said Sepulveda, w hose research is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Electrical energy is created w h en the device is compressed by human motion. The com p leted device is as thin as a sheet of paper. The device used to pow e r the LED lights w a s palm-sized, w h ile the device used to pow e r the touch screen w a s as small as a finger. Advantages such as being lightw e ight, flexible and low -cost could make it a promising and alternative method in the field of Mechanical-energy harvesting.

The device also becomes more pow erful w hen folded. Sepulveda said, “Y ou can start w ith a large device, but w hen you fold it once, and again, and again, it’s much smaller and has mor e energy. Now it may be small enough to put in a specially made heel of your shoe so it creates pow e r each time your heel strikes the ground.”

Sepulveda and his team are also developing technology that w o uld transmit the pow e r generated by the heel strike to, say,

a w i reless headset.

32. The underlined w o rd “device” in the second paragraph probably refers to .

A. a piece of equipment

B. a special kind of smartphone

C. a touch screen

D. a flexible keyboard

33. What can w e learn about Nelson Sepulveda in the passage?

A. He w o rks as a journalist w r iting for Nano Energy.

B. He plays a major role in the project of the nanogenerator.

C.

He invented a type of battery-free smartphone.

D. He collects funds for the National Science Foundation.

34. From the passage w e know that the nanogenerator .

A. becomes more pow e rful w h en kept flat

B. has already come into market in the USA

C. is lightw e ight and flexible though expensive

D. makes it possible to produce pow e r by w a lking

35. The purpose of the passage is to .

A. persuade people to buy the device

B.

bring in a new w ay to save energy C.

introduce a breakthrough in science

D. honor Nelson Sepulveda for his contributions
