Biography

When Salinger learned that a car park was to be built on the land, the middle-aged writer was shocked and quickly bought the neighboring area to protect it. The townspeople never forgot the rescue and came to help their most famous neighbor.

J. D. Salinger:A Life by Kenneth Slawenski(Random House,$27)

Mystery

“You’re a smart boy. Benny’s death was no accident, and you’re the only one who saw it happen. Do you think the murderer should get away with it ? ” The boy was staring stubbornly at his lap again.

A thought suddenly occurred to Annika, “Did you …You recognized the man in the car, didn’t you?

The boy hesitated, twisting his fingers, “Maybe,” he said quietly.

Some mothers suffer so their daughters won’t. Some mothers love so their daughters won’t.

I was raised on a farm in the Fraser Valley along with five sisters and one brother. When I was 15, I got addicted to drinking at weekends and then dropped out of school. By the time I was 17, I continued to drink heavily. I couldn't find a job to support myself. So, I had no other choice but to join the army. I retired and went back home three years later, still a heavy drinker. When I was 22, I met Sue whose father was also a heavy drinker, so my behavior didn't surprise her. We were soon married and later had two daughters.

I started my first business when I was in my mid-twenties. A few years later, I bought a large chicken farm. Even with this success, though, my drinking was always a problem. It affected my marriage and family so much that I knew I had to make up my mind to stop drinking. So I tried great efforts. But two years later, I began drinking again.

When I was in my mid-thirties, I sold both of my businesses, and bought the big house on the hill. I was not at all happy, although I had everything that was supposed to make me happy. I sold our big house on the hill and bought a large land, where I built a new house. Our marriage was in big trouble, and my finances would go down the drain. For the first time in many years, I had to go to work for someone as an employee. I took a job as a heavy equipment operator in a road building camp.

My marriage still came apart when I was 38, and my kids had to go through our divorce. I spent 6 months in giving up drinking on a school camp. Nearly a year later, I met my childhood neighbor girl, June. We were married not long afterwards. My kids learned to trust me again and I have two stepchildren that also love me.

Happy life continued about ten years. Everything was going so well when I felt there was something wrong with my body. I went to see a doctor, and the medical examination came out that I had ALS(肌肉萎缩症). Record shows that people with ALS generally survive between two to five years after symptoms appear. I've probably had the symptoms for one-and-a-half years already, so I don't know how much time I have left.…God knows…

“______”.

A. His two kids didn’t trust him before he remarried.

B. His finance was the first thing that led to the failure of his first marriage.

C. His first wife didn’t know about his drinking before marriage.

D. He gave birth to two children in his 40s.

What would you think if someone suggested knocking down St Paul’s Cathedral to widen the road? Or pulling down Big Ben to make way for a car park? It would be ridiculous, right? But when it comes to devastation (毁灭) of the natural world, we aren’t so easily shocked. But we should be…or we’ll be in a lot of trouble.

Nature is shrinking by the day. Ancient forests are destroyed. Wetlands are becoming dry.

Woodland is disappearing, and all in the name of progress. This is bad in itself, but it’s devastating for biodiversity.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of plants, animals and other living things that are all interconnected. The ecological services provided by biodiversity are vital to everyday life. The air we breathe is a product of photosynthesis (光合作用) by green plants. Insects, worms and bacteria break down waste and make soils rich. And tiny organisms clean the water in rivers and sea. In fact, all life on the earth exists thanks to the benefits of biodiversity. More than 90 percent of the calories consumed by people worldwide are produced from 80 plant species. And 30 percent of medicines are developed from plants and animals. Maintaining a wide diversity of species in each ecosystem is necessary to preserve all living things.

The loss of biodiversity could be devastating. “It is wrong to think that biodiversity can be reduced indefinitely without threatening humans,” said Harvard University biologist Edward O. Wilson, known as the “father of biodiversity”. He warned, “We are about to reach a critical point beyond which biodiversity loss will become irreversible (不可挽回的).”

But what can we do? The present problem is that the concept of biodiversity is so vague (含糊的). People might care about giant pandas, but it is much harder to excite them about the fate of tiny sea creatures which are being boiled to death in the cooling systems of power stations along coastlines. The Guardian newspaper is trying to help. It has launched the Biodiversity 100 campaign to try to convince governments around the world to take action to deal with the widespread concerns about biodiversity. This includes persuading the UK government to create a series of marine reserves to reserve the decrease in the sea-life caused by industrial fishing, stopping fishing sharks by the Japanese fishermen and banning the killing of dingoes (wild dogs) in Australia, among many other things.

There is a lot to do. And we’d better act quickly if we don’t want to end up with a planet that can’t sustain life!

64. The writer thinks it ________ to pull down Big Ben to make way for a car park.

A. unreasonable

B. necessary

C. difficult

D. reasonable

65. Edward O. Wilson thinks that ________.

A. it doesn’t matter to reduce biodiversity

B. people have done enough to preserve biodiversity

C. the situation of biodiversity is very serious

D. biodiversity loss has become irreversible

66. When it comes to biodiversity, the present problem is that ________.

A. people don’t realize that biodiversity i s vital to everyday life

B. people are not aware that giant pandas are endangered

C. people might not clearly know what is biodiversity and what should be protected

D. people hunt sea creatures for food

John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose.

His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a Florida library. Taking a book off the shelf he found himself intrigued, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind. In the front of

the book, he discovered th e previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War II.

During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. A romance was budding. Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like.

When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting -- 7:00 PM at the Grand Central Station in New York. “You’ll recognize me,” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he’d never seen.

I’ll let Mr. Blanchard tell you what happened: A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long and slim. Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime come alive. I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As I moved, a sma ll, attractive smile curved her lips. “Going my way, sailor?” she murmured.

Almost uncontrollably I made one step closer to her, and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl. A woman well past 40, she had graying hair tucked under a worn hat. She was more than plump, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away. I felt as though I was split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own.

And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle. I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her.

This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful. I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment. “I'm Lieutenant(中尉)John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?”

The woman's face broadened into a tolerant smile. “I don't know what this is about, son,” she answered, “but the young lady in the green suit who j ust went by, she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should go and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”

It's not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell's wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive. “Tell me whom you love,” Houssaye wrote, “And I will tell you who you are.”

67. How did John Blanchard get to know Miss Hollis Maynell?

A. They lived in the same city.

B. They were both interested in literature.

C. John came across Hollis in a Florida library.

D. John knew H ollis's name from a library book.

68. Hollis refused to send Blanchard a photo because _____.

A. she thought true love is beyond appearance

B. she wasn't confident about her appearance

C. she was only a middle-aged woman

D. she had never taken any photo before they knew

69. When Blanchard went over to greet the woman, he was _____.

A. disappointed but well-behaved

B. satisfied and confident

C. annoyed and bad-mannered

D. shocked but inspired

70. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. Don't Judge a Book by its Cover

School life can be stressful with a difficult roommate. If you have found yourself stuck with a troubled living situation, review the following six tips for some practical steps you can take to help relieve the roommate stress.

1. Learn about each others’ background and lifestyle.

Take time to learn about each other. By learning about their background and current lifestyle, you will know their habits. Set aside some time where you can ask each other questions about topics including: family; what they miss about home; their school and career goals; preferred sleep schedule and study schedule.

2. Find common interests.

Just about everyone has at least a couple of shared interests. When you’re quizzing each other about backgrounds and lifestyles, make sure to ask your roommate about their hobbies. Once you’ve found a couple of shared interests, set up regular roommate dates where you can enjoy those interests together. And be sure to spend time outside your dorm room or apartment together. By bonding on neutral territory, you will be able to melt away some of the stress that has built up in your shared living space.

3. Communicate.

If your problems have stemmed from conflicting schedules and sharing living space, draw up a schedule that you both can agree upon. List days and times that you each get to use the television, living room, parking space, etc. Talk to your roommate about the difficulties you are experiencing if th eir habits are affecting you. When talking about these, remember to have good manners. Don’t blame them with rude words and be sure to set your emotions aside.

4. Respect each other’s belongings.

While it may be tempting (有诱惑力的) to borrow your roommates DVDs, have some of their snacks or wear their clothes for an outing, be sure to be respectful of their belongings. You

can’t go into their private space or using their personal belongings unless you are permitted.

5. Create a cleaning schedule.

For many college students, this is the first time in their life that they are responsible for cleaning their entire living quarters. Depending on their family environment, they may have never had to clean a toilet, do their laundry or sweep the kitchen floor. Keep the following tips in mind if you have a messy roommate. Talk to your roommate about expectations when it comes to the cleanliness of your shared living space. Create a cleaning schedule and hang it in an area where you both can clearly see the scheduled responsibilities. If your roommate has never done some of these chores before, offer to do them together the first couple of times so you can give them tips and show them how to properly use the necessary cleaning supplies.

Recently, different surveys as to what happiness is have been conducted on different media, which has raised wide public concern. What is happiness? Different people have different ideas.

Recently, different surveys as to what happiness is have been conducted on different media, which has raised wide public concern. What is happiness? Different people have different ideas.

To some people, happiness is having things that make life comfortable and pleasurable, such as beautiful clothes, yummy food and trendy gadgets. Happiness is being surrounded by family and friends, being loved and cared for and appreciated by others.

To some people, happiness means giving. They always think of how to help others and how to contribute to society, no matter how insignificant they are and how little they can do. They are willing to do everything they can to free others from trouble.

To me, the secret to happiness is simple. I’m happy when I’m with my family, talking about what happened at school, helping with housework or simply sitting with them watching tv for a while. I’m happy if I accomplish something, anything, answering a question correctly in class, handing in my project by the deadline or helping a classmate with a math problem. To me, happiness is a choice, an attitude.(155 words)

W: No, thanks. I’m going to the beach. It’s supposed to be hot, so I don’t want to be indoors.

Text 5

M: I went to an eye doctor yesterd ay, and he told me that I’m colorblind.

W: What does that mean?

M: I can’t tell the differences between colors. It’s even worse from far away. Black and white is

fine, though.

Text 6

W: How long did it take you to write your novel?

M: Around three years.

W: Wow, that’s a long time! Where do you usually write?

M: I write in cafés a lot. Sometimes I write at home, or in libraries.

W: Do you have a favorite spot?

M: Cafés are always nice because I can order coffee, and I like being around people. Writing from home gets lonely sometimes, but my preference mostly depends on my mood.

Text 7

M: I had the worst day today!

W: Why, what happened?

M: I was late for school because I got into a car accident. It wasn’t even my fault. Then I spilled soup all over my foot at lunch and everyone laughed at me. No one picked me to be on their team at soccer practice after school. Then on my way home, I almost hit a dog that was in the road.

W: Wow, that does sound horrible. I made your favorite meal for dinner tonight. Maybe that will cheer you up.

M: Oh, thank you! Steak and French fries are exactly what I wanted! Let’s watch the basketball game after the meal.

Text 8

W: Where do you see yourself in ten years?

M: In ten years? I will have graduated college by then, and hopefu lly, I’ll be living in a big city, maybe New York. I want to be a doctor so I can help people. What about you?

W: I’ve always wanted to live in Italy, so I definitely see myself there. Maybe Rome! Or Venice.

Florence seems nice, too.

M: What will your job be?

W: I think I’d like to be a pilot and fly people around the world.

M: That sounds fun. I thought you always wanted to be a lawyer, though.

W: I used to, but that was last year. Now, I want to learn how to fly a plane.

M: Do you think we’ll still be fri ends in ten years?

W: Of course! I’ll visit you in New York and you can visit me in Rome!

Text 9

M: Hi, Sara.

W: Hey, Jimmy. What’s up? I never thought you’d be home on a Saturday night!

M: I’m just calling to tell you that I won’t be able to make it to your party tomorrow. My dog died today.

W: Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that! What happened?

M: I’m not exactly sure. I came home from work tonight and she wasn’t moving. I took her to the hospital and they said her heart had stopped.

W: That’s awful. Don’t w orry about coming to the party. I completely understand.

M: Thanks. She was 15 years old, so at least she had a good, long life. I think she simply died of old age. I just need a few days to myself, but I should be feeling back to normal pretty soon. W: Of course. If there’s anything you need, just give me a call. I can make you some food, or

come spend some time with you if you want me to.

M: Thanks. You’re a good friend. Have fun at the party. I’ll talk to you soon.

W: Hello, this is Charlotte Fra nklin calling from Dr. Carrie Smith’s office. I have a message for Hillary Brown. I’m calling to inform you that Dr. Smith has reviewed your tests, and it looks like you are allergic to the sun. This may be a surprise to you, but it is more common than you might think. Please call us to make an appointment to speak directly with Dr. Smith. In the meantime, try and stay out of the sun as much as possible. If you do go out, wear clothing that will block out as much sun as possible. And definitely put on sun cream. Try not to do many outdoor activities, and if you are driving, please wear sunglasses. Regular pain medicine is often enough to treat a bad sunburn for most of us. But if you get one, please go straight to the emergency room for treatment. This is no t a joke. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water. Please call us as soon as possible to make an appointment. Thank you.

Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
