You should de cide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

题61 - 65

Passage One

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.

Some 4.000 Americans ambitious to become physicians are studying for their M.D.s abroad. Many were rejected by U.S.medical schools simply because there was no room.I.ast year, for example, some 13,000 of 35,000 would—be physicians who applied to U.S.schools were accepted.Of those who were turned down, well over 600 are trying the foreign route. But gaining admittance to a good foreign school may be a problem.British medical schools give priority to Britains, and Canada's world—renowned McGill University School of Medicine takes only a handful of well-qualified Americans annually. But several schools do welcome U.S.medical students--if they can master the local language.More than 500 Americans are enrolled in the Belgian universities at Brussels and Louvain, for example. Some 800 attend the Italian university at Bologna;175 at Rome.Mexico's Autonomous University of Guadalajara numbers l,300 gringos among its 4,000 students.

Despite difficulties abroad, many Americans complete their medical educations, and manage to win the respect of their professors and classmates. One second-year student at Louvain has a simple explanation for thosc successes:“Anyone who comes here has to be motivated. You have to learn a new language. The school is constant hard work, and it's difficult to get back into the States to practise.”

Before they can intern or practise in the United States, graduates of foreign schools must pass a special examination required by medical education authorities. The tough test is designed primarily to weed out those who are unable to speak English or whose medical education is not up to U.S.standards.

61.Which of the following is true about U.S.would—be physicians? ○[A]American medical schools have superfluous applicants.

○[B]Language is a big problem all the American students applying to foreign medical schools have to face.

○[D]As many as one-third of last year's applicants of medical schools are now applying to

foreign schools.

62.Which of the following is true about foreign medical education? ○[A]A lot of foreign medical schools do not welcome U.S.students simply because they have to consider the applicants from their own countries first.

○[B]To enter foreign medical schools is much easier than to gain admit tance into American medical schools if the problem of language is not regarded.

○[C]There are not many good foreign medical schools according to American students.

○[D]There are so many difficuhies in studying abroad that not many American students become successful in foreign medical schools.

63.Which of the following is one of the difficulties the American students at foreign medical schools have to face? ○[A]1aving and medical conditions in foreign countries are not so good as those in America.

○[B]There is racial discrimination against them.

○[C]They are given no opportunities to practise at local places.

○[D]They are treated the same as foreign physicians and medical school graduates when trying to go back to America to practise.

64.What does the word“gringos”mean? ○[A]Americans.○[B]Foreigners.

○[C]Americans in Mexico.○[D]Mexicans.

Between 1977 and 1981,three groups of American women, numbering 27 in all, between the age of 35

and 65,were given month-long tests to determine how they would respond to conditions resembling those

aboard the space shuttle.

Though carefully selected from among many applicants, the women were volunteers and the pay was barely above the minimtlnl wage. They were not allowed to smoke or drink alcohol during the tests, and they were expected to tolerate each other's company at close quarters for the entire period.Among other things they had to stand pressure three times the force of gravity and carry out both physical and mental tasks whole exhausted from strenuous physical exercise. At the end of ten days, they had to spend a further twenty days absolutely confined to bed, during which

time they suffered backaches and other discomforts, and when they were finally allowed up,the more physically active women were especially subject to pain due to a slight calcium lOSS.Results of the tests suggest that women will have significant advantages over man in space. They need less food and less oxygen and they stand up to radiation better.Men's advantages in terms of strength and stamina, meanwhile, are virtually wiped out by the zero gravity condition in space.

66.What were those American women tested for during the whole month? ○[A]For the selection of the responsihle persons.

Passage Three

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage.

Where do Desticides(杀虫剂)fit into the picture of environmental disease? We have seen that they now pollute soil, water.and food, that they have the power to make our streams fishless and our gardens and wood lands sdent and birdless.Man,however much he may like to pretend the contrary,is part of nature. Can he cscape a pollution that is now so thoroughly distributed

throughout our world?

We know that even single exposures to these chemicals,if the amount is large enough, can cause extremely severe poisoning. But this is not thc major problem. The sudden illness or death of farmers, farm workers, and others exposed to sufficient quantities of pesticides are very sad and should nol occur, For t he population as a wholc,we must be more concerned with the delayed effects of absorbing small anlounts of the pesticides that invisibly pollute our world.ResDonsiblc pLlblic heahh officials have pointed out that the biological effects of chemicals are cumnlative(积累的)over long periods of time, and that the danger to the individual may depend on the sum of the exposures received throughout his lifetime. For these very reasons the danger is easily ignored. It is human nat LIre to shake off what may seem to us a threat of future disaster.“Men are naturally most impressed by discases which have obvious signs,”says a wise physician,Dr.Rene Dubos.“Yet some of their worst enemies slowly approach them unnoticed.”

71.What is ttle author's attitude towards the environmental effects of pesticides? ○

○[D]Man appears indifferent to what happens in nature.

73.In the author,s vicw, thc sudden death caused by exposure to large amounts of pesticides________. ○[A]now occurs most frequently among all accidental deaths

○[B]is not the worst of the negative consequences resulting from the use of pesticides

○[C]is unavoidabie because people can't do without pesticides in farming

○[D]has sharply increased so as to become the center of public attention

74.People tend to ignore the delayed effects of exposure to chemicals because______. ○[A]the present is more important for them than the future

○[B]humans are capable of withstanding small amounts of poisoning

○[C]the danger does not become apparent immediately

○[D]limited exposure tO them does little harm tO people'S health

75.It can be concluded from Dr.Dubos'remarks that______.○[A]diseases with obvious signs are easy to cure

cast iron:Ironbridge,a bridge over the River Severn in England. At around the same time, another Eng-lishman experimented with a compound of lime, clay, sand, and iron slag(矿渣)tO produce concrete.Iron had been used since ancient time tO tie building elements together.but after the construction of Ironhridge it took on a new role as a primary structural material.(77)(Builders throughout Europe and North America be gan to set up houses with beams of iron instead of wood.)

(78)(One of the most spectacular examples of early iron construction was the Crystal Palace in london,England).Spreading over 18 acres, the building consisted entirely of screens of glass set within iron frames.Paxlon adapted two major features of the architecture of the Crystal Palace:mass production(in the rnanu-facturcd glass screenS and iron frames)and the use of iron rather than traditional stones or brick. He man- aged to erect this vast building in less than six months,a project he accomplished by detailed planning.(79)(In1889 French engineer Gustave Eiffelcarried forward Paxton's daring ideas for iron construction in his 300-mtaII Eiffcl Tower in Paris.)(80)(Steel for construction also became abundantly availahle in the 19th century.)
