Unit 11 (a) Arranging a conference

I. Teaching Objectives:

i. To enable Ss to talk about arranging a conference

ii. To practise reading and listening for specific information

II. Materials needed:

III. Teaching Process:

V ocabulary: Ss order cards showing how to arrange a conference.

Listening 1: Ss listen to a telephone call about arranging a

marketing conference and answer true/false questions

before filling in a form.

Speaking: Ss discuss what the conference orgainser’s job involves.

Reading: Ss scan advertisements about three conference venues for

specific information.

Speaking: Ss work in pairs and select a venue for the marketing

conference.

·Confirming arrangements

Listening 2: Ss listen to a telephone call in which conference arrangements are checked and complete notes.

Language focus: Ss review language for checking and confirming

information.

Speaking: Ss discuss a conference programme. (Activity sheet pages 126 and 130)

Writing: Ss work in pairs to plan and then write a letter of confirmation.

Step 1 An enquiry

Warmer: T introduces the subject of conferences and elicits briefly whether students have attended or organized conferences and their general opinion of them.

Ex. 1 V ocabulary

T hands out a set of cards to each pair of students to sort into the correct order for organising a conference. This vocabulary will be recycled in this step. We need to concern about the details of the conference which include choice of location, equipment needed, budget, date, duration, finalizing the programme details, invitation of delegates and asking for a quotation.

Ex. 2 Listening 1

T sets the scene before playing the cassette. Students complete the true/false exercise.

Ex. 3 Listening 1

Ss listen again and complete the form. Ss check answers in pairs before class feedback.

Before Ss read the proposals, T elicits the type of information Ss would need for deciding on a venue for a conference ( price? Near the centre/airport? Attractive location? Modern or old-style charm? etc.) Ss then read the three descriptions and complete the scanning exercise. T points out that the answers may include more than one hotel.

Ss work out which hotel would be che apest for Daniel’s conference. They then decide if any other considerations would outweigh this factor. For instance, location/ venue, distance from the centre/airport, setting, modern or old-style charm.

Step 2 Confirming arrangements

Before the listening exercise, T asks Ss to read through Rachel’s notes and checks Ss know what type of information they are listening for. Then T replays the cassette for Ss and focuses on language for checking before referring Ss to the Don’t forget! section.

Ex. 2 Speaking

Before Ss look at the Activity sheets on pages 126 and 130, T introduces the notion of the conference programme and brainstorms the type of information included. Ss then work in pairs to complete the programme. T rounds off the activity by asking for any comments on the programme. T explains plenary; this is for Ss’ passive recognition rather than active use.

Ex. 3 Writing

T elicits the answers to prompt questions and encourages Ss to plan the letter before writing.

The conference will take place at the Karoliny Conference Centre in

a conference room and a seminar room for the conference.

The Europa Events representative will welcome delegates on 25 September. Delegates will pay their phone bills; their drinks will go to the Amtech master account.

complete the conference programme. Ss then listen

verb forms referring to the future in time clauses.

Ss then complete the Don’t forget! section. Ss

make complete sentences about the programme

using prompts on cards and time conjunctions.

Speaking: Ss work in pairs and decide how they would orgainse a

sightseeing tour of their own city/town as part of a

weekend conference.

·The confirming report

Reading: Ss read extracts from the conference report and match them with the relevant programme item.

V ocabulary: Ss read the extracts again and underline adjectives.

They then provide opposites for these adjectives.

Listening 2: Ss listen to a delegate giving feedback on the conference and fill in her feedback form.

Speaking: Ss work in pairs and discuss what makes a good

conference.

Ss read the typescript and extract the verb forms in the time clauses. Then Ss complete the Don’t forget! box.

Ss work in pairs. They take turns to pick up two cards. They then use a time conjunction to make a sentence about the pragramme.

Ex. 5 Speaking

Ss work in pairs to decide on a sightseeing tour for conference delegates to their city (museums, gardens, palaces, shopping streets etc.) When pairs have worked out a suitable programme, T selects one or two samples across the group.

Useful expressions:

Ex. 1 Reading

T may wish to prepare Ss for this activity by discussing who would write up a conference report (the organiser? a staff representative?) and why (to act as a reminder? to act as a record? To provide information for people who could not attend?). Ss then read the extracts and decide who wrote this particular report (a staff representative).

二、教学设计

第一次课设计梗概(2课时) (1)告知学生本课程的总体安排、教材的处理,上课的方式、明确学习目标。 两个目标:通过听、说、读、写及分组讨论,案例表演和课堂演示,培养学生在商务情景下的工作习惯和交流意识;尽量通过BEC初级考试。 两个要求:为了提高学生的积极性并使他们了解在平时的学习中应提高哪些能力,告诉学生现在用人单位对员工的要求,第一要有一定的专业素质,二是情商要高,即懂得如何交流,如何为人处事。 教学方式:在教学中,主要采取活动教学,通过各种各样的活动,提高学生的自信心和交流能力。将学生分为六组,每组四人,一个组即为一个公司,每个组员都有一个职位,第一周确定每个组员的职位。第三、四周确定公司的名称、职能和业务范畴,并在全班演示。 (2)考核方式 平时表现:两个方面,一是整组的表现,即各个公司在各种课堂活动上的表现;二是 个人的主动表现和提问表现.只要平时刻苦努力,积极主动。
