How can I make a difference in the students’ growth as a teacher?
(The students are supposed to relate these tasks to their own learning and work experience and then express what they want to say with brevity and clarity. Their writings will be graded based on cohesion, coherence and language appropriateness in grammar, spelling and wording.
In the process of the students’ growth, teachers play a critical role, not simply the initiator of knowledge, but also the enlightener of wisdom and the guider of life. As a famous Chinese saying goes, “A teacher is to propagate the doctrine，impart professional knowledge，and resolve doubts.”
For one thing, the doctrine that the teachers propagate is not an idle, it refers to the attitude towards the specific people and things in our life. As a qualified teacher, I should set an example in front of my students. Keep the promise made to others, and be friendly and polite to the people around me. And if I make mistakes in class, I will do the self-examination and show my students how I fix my deficiencies.
For another thing, teachers should continuously improve their professional qualities. It's never too old to learn, no matter what kind of job you are engaged in. In the era of information explosion, we teachers should keep pace with the “evolution” of knowledge. We cannot deny that the leaning contents today are far more difficult than before and the
students’ points of interest are always changing. In this case, teachers should equip themselves with the latest knowledge within and outside their subjects.
In addition to the above two aspects, we teachers should also pay attention to the mental growth of the students, being the pathfinder of their life. Faced with the various temptation in the society, students cannot always tell the right from the wrong. When we find those students who are in trouble, seize the appropriate occasion to deliver a hand to them. I once came across some students with high sense of self-esteem. They refused apparent help from others, so I communicated with them by writing letters. Fortunately, it worked!
To sum up, teachers are “engineers” in the students’ physical and psychological development. Students can easily grow into twisted trees under natural conditions. We teachers’ sacred duty is to “cut off” students’ distorted branches and to “water” them w ith the purest knowledge.
