AWhen I was young, my father had one of the first telephones m our neighborhood. I remember the shiny box on the wall. But I was too little to reach it. I could only listen to my mother talk on it.I discovered that inside the-wonderful box lived an amazing person whose name was Information Please. There was nothing she did not know. One day my mother went out. I accidentally hurt my finger when I was playing with a hammer. I walked around the house sucking my finger, finally seeing the telephone. Quickly I dragged a chair over and climbed up.“Information Please, ”I spoke into the receiver. A click or two and a small clear vo ice spoke into my ear. “Information.”“I hurt my finger…”I cried into the phone.“Isn‟t your mother home?” came the question.“Nobody‟s home but me.” I sobbed.“Are you bleeding?” the voice asked.“No,” I replied, “I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.”“Can you open your icebox?” she asked. I said I could.“Then take a little piece of ice and hold it to your finger.” said the voice. After that, I called “Information Please” for everything. I asked her for help with my geography and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me her name was Sally. Then, there was the time my pet canary(金丝雀)died. The 84-year-old‟s route to the honour has been anything but traditional. In China, she is being called the “three nos” winner:no medical. degree, no doctora te, and she‟s never worked overseas. In 1967, malaria, a then deadly disease, spread by mosquitoes was decimating Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the jungles of northern Vietnam. A secret research unit “Mission 523” was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later, Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of “Mission 523”.“Mission 523” read ancient books carefully for a long time to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for an anti-malarial drug, more than 240,000 compounds(化合物)around the world had already been tested, without any success. Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood(青蒿),which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 AD. The team took out one active compound in wormwood, and then tested it. But nothing was effective until Tu Youyou returned to the original ancient text. After another careful reading, she changed the drug recipe one final time, heating the compound without allowing it to reach boiling point. After the drug showed promising results in mice and monkeys, Tu Youyou volunteered to be the first human recipient of the new drug.In any case, Tu Youyou is consistently praised for her drive and passion. One former colleague, Lianda Li, sa ys Ms Tu is “unsociable and quite straightforward”, adding that “if she disagrees with something, she will say it.”Another colleague, Fuming Liao, who has worked with Tu Youyou for more than 40 years, describes her as a “tough and stubborn woman”. Stubbor n enough to spend decades piecing together ancient texts, she applies them to modem scientific practices. The result has saved millions of lives.25.According to Para 1, we can learn that __________.A.Tu is the first woman to win a Nobel Prize B.Tu has a medical degreeC.Tu‟s road to success is not traditional D.Tu discovered a cure for malaria26.The underlined word “decimating”can be replaced by __________.A.encouraging B.killing C.annoying D.benefiting27.Which of the following statements is true?A.Tu first invented the idea of using sweet wormwood as a cure.B.Tu was inspired by medical textbooks published in northern vietnem.C.The compound needs to be heated to the boiling point to be effective.D.Over 240,000 compounds were proved ineffective before Tu‟s search.28.Tu Youyou can be best described as a __________ person.A.devoted and stubborn B.straightforward and meanC.considerate and tough D.sociable and generousCIf you live in a big city, there are many things to drive you crazy on your daily route, and it‟s not just overcrowded subway trains.Vicky Zhao is a mainlander working in Hong Kong. For her, one thing she can‟t put up wi th is people standing on the wrong side of the escalator(自动扶梯)in subway stations. “Escalators help us move faster and save time. It isn‟t a place to rest,” the 24-year-old says. “I often see tourists block the way with their suitcases or chatting on the escalators during rush hours. It annoys me to no end.”Admitting she is not the patient type, Zhao says things are much better in Hong Kong than in cities on the mainland where “stand right, walk left” signs are often ignored. The logic behind the “stand right, walk left” escalator etiquette(礼仪)seems obvious. Even though you may want to catch your breath while you‟re transported up or down, you should still consider others and leave enough space for people in a hurry, so that they can run and catch the train. Many cities‟ escalators, including London‟s and Beijing‟s, use the “stand right, walk left” system to speed up the flow of people.(Australia is an exception and you should stand on the left side instead.)But some cities discourage people from moving on es calators out of safety reasons. In Hong Kong‟s subway stations there are regular announcements asking people to “stand still” on escalators. Even so, most people in this fast-paced city observe the “stand right, walk left” etiquette. But the people who stand on escalators defend themselves by telling the walkers not to be so impatient. The BBC quotes one stander as saying:“If the person is in such a rush, why not just take the stairs? Even when the escalator is packed and there‟s nowhere to move, I see thes e same people complaining about not being able to pass.Whatever the escalator etiquette is in the place you live or visit, do what most people are doing and always be mindful of others: leave enough space between each other, don‟t stay at the end of the e scalator, and if someone is blocking your way, a simple “excuse me” is enough.29.In the second paragraph, the underlined word It refers __________.A.the author‟s living in the big city of Hong Kong B.being crowded on the subway trains m rush hours C.pe ople‟s blocking the way or chat on the escalators D.people‟s standing on the right side resting 30.When on the escalator, a majority of local people in Hong Kong __________.A.stand still as the railway stations require B.ignore the “stand right, walk left” signsC.use the stairs instead of escalators D.follow the “stand right, walk left” etiquette31.What can be inferred from the 6th paragraph?A.Not everyone follows the “stand right, walk left” etiquette.B.The BBC is against the “stand right, walk left” etiquette.C.People should be patient and take the stairs if possible.D.People shouldn‟t complain about the crowded escalators.32.Which of the following statements is t he writer‟s opinion?A.People should stand right no matter where they are.B.People should do as the Romans do and consider others.C.People should do as they like on the escalators.D.People. should be seriously critisized when they block the way.DExplore Australia‟s Top End on a Northe rn Territory camping tour through Kakadu, Katherine Gorge and Litchfield national parks. 卷14 2016年东北三省四市教研联合体高考模拟试卷(一)[听力录音材料]Text 1M: I need to use the restroom, but the door is locked. No one is there because I already knocked on the door. Can you give me the key?W: Well, t he restroom is for customers only. You’ll need to buy something before I can give it to you.Text 2M: When does the play start? My ticket says 7:30 p.m.W: Well, that’s when it officially starts. They actually check tickets fifteen minutes earlier. And if you’re not seated when the lights go down five minutes before that, they won’t let you in.Text 3W: I play basketball three times a week. What’s your favorite sport, Patrick?M: I played baseball as a young kid, but I hav en’t picked up a bat in years. I’m much more into tennis these days.Text 4M: I wish Uncle Jim wouldn’t talk with his mouth full of food.W: Well, I love his jokes and that makes up for his lack of manners.Text 5W: How much did you pay for this new fridge?M: Oh, it was a little over a thousand dollars, plus tax. It was much more expensive than our washing machine, but not nearly as much as our bed!Text 6W: I can’t believe Thanksgiving is right around the corn er! Who usually does the cooking in your family?M: My mother and my two aunts don’t let anyone else do anything except for the salad and the drinks. That includes all the sauces, desserts, and place settings.W: Wow. It sounds like they take Turkey Day pretty seriously.M: Listen, if Thanksgiving were an Olympic sport, they would be kicked out for winning too many gold medals! What about you?W: Well, my parents and I do everything together. It’s better than one person trying to do too much.Text 7W: Oh, there is nothing better than a nice cold glass of ice water on a hot day.M: You know, cold water always gives me stomachaches.W: Really? I’ve never had that problem. I’ve been drinking ice water since I was little.M: Hmm. When I was a small boy, my grandmother never let my mom give me anything other than warm water.W: Even in the summer?M: Yes. Every once in a while, my dad would take me to get some ice cream, but my grandmother was never happy about that. I think it was the sugar that she didn’t like…Text 8M: Is it me, or is it really hard to understand this speaker?W: You’re right. It’s not that he has an accent like some of the other speakers from another country. It’s just that he is speaking too softly. Do you think it would be rude to ask him to turn his microphone up a little bit?M: I don’t think he’s wearing one. Either that or he’s turned it off.W: That’s crazy. There must be four hundred people here.M: This part of the conference has turned into such a waste of time. Maybe we should leave and try to find another lecture.W: I can’t do that. I come here specifically to hear this guy’s speech. I think I’ll just go up to him at the end of the speech and try to ask him some questions.M: Good idea. Would you mind if I followed you up there? It might be the only way to get anything out of this hour.W: No problem.Text 9W: Excuse me. Can you tell me where I can find dresses for teenagers?M: Yes, they’re on the left, next to the purses. But don’t you think you should look for somet hing, uh… a bit more mature?W: Oh, no… i t’s not for me. I’m looking for a present for my niece. She’s turning 16 next week, and she’s having a big party.M: Oh, I remember when my daughter was that age. She’s about to graduate college now.W: How wonderful! Yeah, Elizabeth is looking at schools right now. We’ll probably take her on a tour of the East Coast collegesometime in the fall. She lives with my brother and his wife in Oregon.M: There are some schools there that offer good programs, but they probably don’t get the scenery like we do here on the East Coast. I’ve always liked seeing the seasons change. I went to the University of Pennsylvania. What about you?W: I went to BrownUniversity.M: Great! Sowhere does your niece want to go to school?W: Oh, I think Harvard, Yale, and the University of Chicago are her top three choices.M: Well, those are all fantastic schools with a long history, but I think it’s a good idea to take her to see all those places up close and in person. You can’t get a s ense of a college until you set foot on campus.W: I couldn’t agree more! Well, I’d better get back to my shopping!Text 10Hello, I’m Rachel Joyce. I’m so happy to be here today at the Claremont Library. I’ve traveled all the way from England, and it’s truly wonderful to visit the United States! This is the first stop on my book tour. I’m off to Australia next! Before I take any questions, let me tell you a bit about myself. My new novel, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, was recently published in 2014. The book is a companion to my first novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which follows a man named Harold Fry as he goes in search of his old friend, Queenie Hennessy, in hopes of saying goodbye before she dies. The novel was published in 2012. It was almost chosen for the Commonwealth Book Prize and the Man Booker Prize. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is Queenie’s side of the story as she waits for Harold. I’ve also written many radio plays for BBC Radio Four, and in 2007, I won the Tinniswood Award for my radio play To Be a Pilgrim. I have also won the UK National Book Award for New Writer of the Year. Before I was a writer, I was an actress in theatre and on TV. I’ll take questions from the audience now.。

So when her teacher Andrea Smeeton received information about the national challenge, Smeeton said she immediately had one student in mind.“I knew she would love the challenge and that she wouldgo way beyond in her search,”Smeeton said. “She immediately started researching bone density (密度) of astronauts and how to have food on Mars.”“My design will ensure the safety of the astronauts but also make sure their comfort is out of this world,”Dobek says.Dobek’s design calls for building the MSS or Mars Storage Station to put the supplies in. It also includes the SGF or Self-Crowing Farm, and she details how it would work with the elements on Mars. Then there is physical and leisure activity for the astronauts under Dobek’s design. A simulation (模拟装置) allows astronauts to choose their exercise machine and virtual (虚拟的) reality environment. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Headstart”was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It Look children into pre-school institutions atthe age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Headstart” children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment. To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child’s first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four-year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socio-economic status, age and family structure. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance, and useful skills on child development. At three, the children involved in the “Missouri”program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socio-economic backgrounds and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were moreadvanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socio-economic backgrounds or family structure. The one factor that was found to affect the child’s development was the poor quality of parent-child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families. The “Missouri” program compares quite distinctly with the “Headstart” program. Without a similar focus of parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome education unfairness.1.What caused the failure of the “Headstart” program?A. The large number of poor families.B. The disapproval from children.C. The late start of the program.D. The long period of time.2.What do we know about the “Missouri” program?A. It focused on the children’s first school teachers.B. It helped the children return to the same home.C. It made the children improved in many aspects.D. It gave the parents advice on their development.3.According to the passage, what is likely to influence children s performance?A. The number of family members.B. The teacher-student relationship.C. The intelligence of their parents.D. The parent-child communication.4.How does the author develop the passage?A. By listing figures.B. By making comparisons.C. Ry presenting ideas.D. By drawing conclusions.Rich as a KingWilliam 1, who conquered England some 930 years ago, had wealth, power and an army. Yet although William was very rich by the standard of his time, he had nothing like a flush toilet (抽水马桶), paper towels, or riding lawn mower (除草机). How did he get by?History books are filled with wealthy people who were poor compared to me. I have storm windows, Croesus did not. Entire nations trembled before Alexander the Great, but he couldn’t buy cat food. Czar Nicholas lacked an electric saw.Given how much better off I am than so many famous deadpeople, you’d think I’d be content. The trouble is that, like most people, I compare my wealth with that of living person: neighbors, school classmates, famous TV people. The greed I feel toward my friend Howard’s new kitchen is not reduced by the fact that no kings ever had a refrigerator with glass doors,There is really no rising or falling standard of living. Over the centuries people simply find different things to feel sad about. You’d think that simply not having disease would put us in a good mood, but no we want a hot bath too.Of course, one way to achieve happiness would be to realize that even by today’s standards the things I own are pretty nice. My house is smaller than the houses of many investment bankers, but even so it has a lot more rooms than my wife and I can keep clean.Besides, to people looking back at our era from a century or two in the future, these bankers’ fancy counter tops and my awn worn Formica will seem equally shabby, I can’t keep up with my neighbors right now. But just wait.1.What docs the underlined phrase “get by” in the first paragraph mean?A. Succeed as a king.B. Deal with complains.C. Get some extra money.D. Live in a satisfactory way.2.How many historical figures are mentioned to compare lives in the past and present?A. 3.B. 4.C. 5.D. 6.3.According to the passage, the author intends to______ .A. tell us to be content with lifeB. warn us to live in a simple wayC. leach us to learn lessons from lifeD. encourage us lo struggle for wealth4.What’s the author’s attitude towards life?A. Doubtful.B. Optimistic.C. Uncaring.D. 第四部分写作:第一节Possible version:In order to encourage students to take responsibility and help out with household chores, our school held an activity called“Housework,I can do it”last week.Students were required to do some housework each day. Some tidied their rooms, while others swept or vacuumed the floor. At the weekend, some even prepared a delicious dinner for their parents.Such experiences were so precious that many photos were taken and posted to the school website. The event was well received and highly appreciated. All thought it was a great opportunity to taste the joy of labor.(96)Currently,a school campaign called“Housework,I can do it”is under way, aimed at equipping us students with basic life skills and developing a sense of responsibility. Each student is required to help out with household chores and have their work recorded in the form of photos or video clips.Students are actively involved. Most students start from their bedrooms:make their beds, clean their tables or vacuum their floor. Some even help with a healthy breakfast or do the laundry for their family.Students generally express that they have not only acquired skills but also learned the spirit of giving through housework.(104)第二节Possible version:I pushed the door open and saw a complete mess again!Covering the floor was more of the same substance that I had just seen in Callie’s hair!It was everywhere—on my bed,on the floor, and on my bookshelves and desk!Callie had poured cheese all over my room! And the room was filled with the disgusting smell.“She did it again!”I screamed,my face being red and hot with rage.No sooner had more angry words burst out than I found Callie at the door. Cautiously she came to me,hugged my knees tightly and murmured with tears streaming down like raindrops.Seeing the tears in her eyes,I bent down and lifted her up gently. She threw her arms around my neck and whispered in my ear,“Sissy, the cheese is very sweet!I want to share it with you.”Her words really melted my heart although my neck felt rather sticky.I sighed deeply. After all,she was only three and experimenting with the world. It was nice to feel so loved by someone younger than me.She looks up to me,her big sister.I guess that’s why she always chooses my room to explore and destroy.英语听力原文Text1W:Excuse me,sir. Can I meet your manager at8:30a.m.tomorrow?M:Sorry,I am afraid that you will have to wait half an hour for our business hours.Text2W:Are your parents early, again?Didn’t you tell everyone to come to the party in an hour? ATwo boys walked down a road that led through a field. The younger of the two noticed a farmer working in the field of his farm, his clothes and shoes placed neatly off to the side. His expression will be priceless!”The boy laughed. The older of the two boys thought for a moment and said, "The man looks poor.See his clothes? Let's do this instead: Let’s hide a dollar in each shoe and then we will hide in these bushes and see how he reacts to that, instead."The younger companion agreed to the plan and they placed a dollar in each shoe and hid in the bushes.. Those feelings are among the reasons why Australia is taking a close look at its international education industry. But wherever international students go, making friends may not always be easy. Elisabeth Gareis of Baruch College in New York surveyed 454 international students. They were attending four-year colleges and graduate schools in the American South and Northeast.Students from English-speaking countries and from northern and central Europe were more likely to be happy with their friendships. But 38% of the international students said they had no close friends in the United States. And half of the students from East Asia said they were unhappy with the number of American friends they had. Thirty percent said they wished their friendship could be deeper and more meaningful.Professor Gareis says,“Students from East Asia have cultures that are different on many levels from the culture in the United States. There are also language problems, and maybe some social skills, such as small talks, which are possibly not as important in their native countries, where it’s not as important to start friendships with small talks. Many East Asian students blamed themselves for their limited friendship with Americans, for not speaking the language well enough and for not knowing the culture well enough.”VOA’s Students Union blogger Jessica Stahl did her own survey to find out how American students and foreign students relate to each other. More than 100 students, about half of them American, answered her online questions. Half of the international students and 60% of the Americans said they related as well or better to the other group than to their own group. Professor Gareis says, “International students who make friends with host nationals are, overall , more satisfied with their stay in the host country. They have better language skills, better academic performance and better attitudes toward the host country.”24.What can be the best title for the text?A.Making Friends Is Not Always Easy for Foreign StudentsB.Students from East Asia Are Not Good at Making FriendsC.International Education Industry in Australia and AmericaD.The Relation between Foreign Students and Host Countries25.Professor Gareis tends to think that .A.culture shock should be blamed for many levels of American cultureB.foreign students don’t know small talks mean a lot to AmericansC.foreign students should learn some basic social skills first of allD.foreign students have difficulty making friends for different reasons26.How did Jessic Stahl carry out her survey?A.By doing questionnaires from Students Union.B.By asking questions on the InternetC.By forming the students into groupsD.By doing a survey through VOA27.Which of the following statements will the writer probably agree with?A.International students like to make more friends in their own group.B.International students are more likely to remain in the host country after graduation.C.Students who make more friends at home have better academic performance.D.Students who make friends in their host countries feel happier with their experience.CAnnouncementsBret Harte vs. Calaveras alumni boysThe annual Bret Harte vs. CHS alumni boy basketball game will be held at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov.30, at Calaveras High. For fans of Naruto Uzumaki, the ending of the manga(漫画) on Nov.10 is like leaving an old friend from a misplaced youth. After 15 years, the brave teen with blonde hair and an orange jumpsuit grew to be a mainstay in the lives of many readers.“He’s far from perfect. He’s very picky eater. He’s afraid of ghosts. He’s got the habit of giving nicknames to people. Naruto reminds me a lot of myself. But I admire him for his courage matter what,” said Wu Xian, 25, a faithful fan who woks for English Media in Nanjing. The manga follows the adventures of leading character Naruto Uzumaki, who wants to be the world’s best ninja(忍者). Actually as he grew stronger, Naruto won recognition among his people, but Sasuke was always special to him,” said Shao Shuai, 23, a postgraduate student at Hong Kong Baptist University. Finally, Naruto has achieved his goal of becoming the seventh Hokage.
