One Monday morning, I was standing waiting for the train and suddenly felt ill. I didn't eat much over the weekend because I moved into a new place and was very busy. Earthquake prediction research has been going on for nearly a century but successful earthquake predictions are extremely rare.

In spite of so much research and wonderful equipment, it is impossible to predict an earthquake accurately, although experts can estimate roughly an earthquake coming in a particular region. Approximately 1,000 earthquakes measuring 5.0 and above occur yearly. Earthquakes of the greatest intensity(强度) happen about once a year and major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) occur about 18 times a year. Most earthquakes are not even noticed by the general public, since they happen either under the ocean or in areas where there are no people living. Please read on for some tips about how to stay safe in an earthquake:

● If you are indoors, find a secure location to wait out the quake, such as under

a heavy table or desk. Doorways are among the safest places to stand, thanks to the strong beams overhead. However, watch out for swinging doors. Stay away from windows.

● If you are outdoors, try to get into an open area, away from falling buildings, power lines, trees, etc.

● If you are in a crowded public area, crouch down, with your hands protecting your head and neck.

● If you are in your car, pull over to the side, away from power lines and overpasses, and stay inside the car until the shaking calms down.

● Be sure to put on shoes immediately, to avoid injury from stepping on broken glass and objects.

● Check yourself and others for injuries.

● Do NOT use your automobile unless there is an emergency.

● If you must leave the area, try to leave word where you can be contacted.

● REMEMBER that there may be aftershocks, which can also cause great damage to your surroundings. Be prepared!

102. Scientists cannot predict an earthquake because .

A. they haven't got enough equipment to do some research about it

B. research on earthquake prediction has been going on for only fifty years

C. they have no ability to solve the difficult problems at present

D. experts can estimate the possibility of an earthquake occurring in a place 103. Why can't most earthquakes be felt by common people?

A. They happen under the ocean or in places with no one living there.

B. Common people are too busy to pay attention to these earthquakes.

C. Common people know little about what can cause earthquakes.

D. Most earthquakes won't cause great damage to common people.

104. What's the importance of putting on shoes during an earthquake?

A. To run as quickly as you can.

B. To save money needed for new ones.

C. To help your family members.

D. To avoid harm done to your feet.

105. The best title for the text might be .

A. Cause of Every Earthquake

B. Tips for You in an Earthquake

C. Numbers of Earthquakes Yearly

D. Earthquake Prediction Research

八、短文7选5(5选5等)(共5小题;共10分)

Pressure and Pleasure

The town of Pressure and the town of Pleasure were neighbors but had nothing in common. 111.

In Pressure, everyone struggled to be the very best. When women gave birth, they would compete to have the baby with the loudest cry. 112. Because wealth was the index(指数) of success, people were always busy making money, with no time for relaxation. Some young people couldn't bear the intensity(紧张) and resorted to drink or drugs to escape.

113. People grew up without pressure and could do anything they liked. Children played computer games day and night. At school, teachers didn't care whether students showed up or not. Workers might sit around the office all day long sipping coffee and doing nothing. Thanks to the lack of regulation, nobody worried about losing their jobs. 114. No one had the slightest thought of moving forward, either for themselves or for the town. The computers they used were old models from Pressure.

Some of the young in both were addicted to drugs because of the emptiness of their lives. Then, people in the two towns began asking themselves, "What is life for?" But, just before life in the two towns completely failed, there came a saint—Mr.

Reason. He went from door to door, talking with people and giving advice. People in Pressure learnt to be content with what they had, while people in Pleasure began to make plans. 115. The townspeople came to realize the truth-there is no space between Pressure and Pleasure if don't go to extremes.

A. It was pleasure that mattered.

B. There was violent competition in every aspect of life.

C. Citizens built walls to keep out influence from the other town.

D. Success was not significantly affected by the size of the pressure sore.

E. Meanwhile, in Pleasure, the motto was "as long as you like it, do it."

F. Although they got as much pleasure as possible, they didn't have a better life.

G. They pulled down the walls between them and built a road to connect the two.

Good relationships between teachers or students are important to teaching and learning. Only with good relationships can student and teachers cooperate well.

Good relationships depended on both sides. On the one hand, students should respect teachers and our hard work. They should polite to teachers and ready to following their advice. On an other hand, teachers should be kindly, friendly and patient to students. They must be responsible on their teaching and help students. M: I particularly enjoyed the description of the scenery. The characters were quite well developed.

W: Oh, I felt that way, too, though I thought it was a bit long. I was relieved when I finally finished it.

(Text 2)

M: If you don't finish your project, the manager is going to give you a hard time.

W: I know. I'm afraid I'll have to work overtime this weekend.

(Text 3)

M: What a beautiful day today!

W: Yes, especially after so many days of rain. I'm glad the weather finally turned fine. M: Though I just heard it will be cloudy tomorrow.

(Text 4)

M: Hello! May I speak to Mr. Brown?

W: I'm sorry. He's at a meeting now. He should be back in the office in half an hour. Would you like to leave a message?

M: Thank you, but I'll just try back later.

W: OK.

(Text 5)

W: What's that over there? Is it moving?

M: There's nothing to be scared of. Don't be a chicken.

W: I really don't like it here. When will we go back to the city?

M: Really? I love it here. The air is so fresh and it's so quiet.

(Text 6)

M: My boss needs a secretary. Interested?

W: You should have told me earlier. I've just promised my aunt I'd work at her company.

M: Then do you know anyone else who might be interested?

W: Jenny might like to try. She told me yesterday that she was tired of her job.

M: But I don't think she'll ever really give up her job. The pay is too good.

W: But she doesn't like it. It keeps her too busy.

(Text 7)

W: What a lovely baby! Is it a boy, Henry?

M: No, it's a baby girl. It's Mrs. Brown's daughter.

W: Why are you taking care of the baby today?

M: Mrs. Brown went to see a friend who's in town for only one day. She hasn't seen her for years, so she didn't want to miss the chance.

W: How much does Mrs. Brown pay you an hour?

M: Sixteen dollars.

W: That's not bad. You'll make a fortune today. So what will you do with the money? M: I'm saving up for a Mother's Day present. I want to give my mom a big surprise this year.

W: Really? You're such a good son, Henry.

(Text 8)

W: Look at Mary. She's so popular. Why do the guys like her so much? She isn't all that pretty.

M: I guess it's because she has a good sense of humor. She always knows how to make others laugh.

W: I want to be funnier, but I don't know how. People must think I'm boring.

M: I have to admit you don't know how to make others laugh.

W: People like hanging out with you, too, and you often make people laugh. So tell me - how can I be funnier?

M: Well, first, you have to learn to laugh. You rarely laugh, you know. Second, if you hear other people laughing, just ask them why they're laughing. They'll tell you what's so funny, and you can figure out what makes other people laugh. Third, just spend lots of time with fun people, people who like to play.

W: That's really great advice - I will definitely try all that.

M: Oh, and of course, always look for humor in a bad situation.

(Text 9)

W: Why are you back so late, Mike? It's already half past six. You should have been home half an hour ago.

M: Sorry, Mom. There was a traffic accident.

W: What? Did you get hurt?

M: Don't worry. I'm fine. I just saw the traffic accident happen.

W: So what happened?

M: A car hit a truck. When I got there, I found that both the car driver and the truck driver were injured.

W: Could you do anything for their injuries?

M: No, I was afraid that I'd hurt them further if I moved them. But I ran as fast as I could to the nearest house and told the man there what had happened. Amazingly, he's a doctor. He grabbed his first-aid kit and ran back with me. He took care of their injuries and then dialed 911.

W: Were they taken to the hospital?

M: Yes. The police and an ambulance came about ten minutes later.

W: Mike, I'm so proud of you. Now go and wash your hands. Supper's ready.

M: OK, Mom. I'm really starving now.

(Text 10)

This morning, I was walking home down Seventh Avenue. As I was getting close to the supermarket, I saw a small crowd around an elderly woman. The woman was lying face down on the sidewalk. There was blood under her knees. I stopped and asked if I could help out. A young girl was calling 911; a young man told me the elderly woman had just tripped on the sidewalk and fallen onto the ground face down. I told the woman I was certified in first aid and asked if I could help her. Then I sent someone to the supermarket for a first-aid kit.

The woman was 80 years old and she was alone. People brought out ice packs from the gym nearby, water and paper towels from the supermarket. I put on the gloves from the first-aid kit, and cleaned her up a bit. Two doctors happened to be passing by and they stopped to help. We helped her sit up and then moved her to a bench. Finally, after ten minutes the ambulance arrived. She was taken to hospital. I picked up my bags and walked home, feeling very happy that I could help.

John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

-必修 5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history. First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this was accomplished without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack. To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the currency and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup! England is the largest of the four countries, and for convenience it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, nationwide, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical architecture you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans. There you will find out more about British history and culture. The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings. It is the centre of national
