We all see and hear about extraordinary people and wonder why we can’t be like them.

It’s not the big things but small things that make someone extraordinary.

1. 1

Just because you’re the boss doesn’t mean you are right every time. Learn to back

up your ideas or decisions with reason. Use logic to explain things, not authority. By doing this your decisions might invite criticism, but you will also get an opportunity

to improve.

2. They are generous with praise. Remember the time when you worked really hard but

got nothing in return. 2 So every chance you get to praise someone, do it.

3. They are helpful. Never hesitate to help someone. 3 Be specific: “I had

the same problem with this coffee machine in the morning. I think I have figured a way

to make it work.”

4. They apologize when needed.

We all make mistakes, but what makes a person big is that he is ready to apologize.

4 Don’t try to shift the blame. Just come out and say you’re sorry.

5. They’re in cha rge of their emotions.

Sometimes it is very important to stay silent, especially when you’re angry. You don’t want to end up saying things you didn’t really mean to. 5 Never be rash (轻率的) with words or actions.

A. They are open to criticism.

B. Don’t try to hide behind excuses.

C. It hurts when your efforts are not recognized.

D. Before you say anything, consider others’ feelings.

E. Give the person in front of you a smile and thank him or her.

F. When you don’t understand how something works, let an expert show you.

G. Don’t say something not clear like, “Can I help you?” because they might say, “No, I’m good.”

(二)

Do you have a habit of starting projects, but not finishing them? If so, you are not alone. 1 How to finish the projects you start? Here is my best tips.

1. Be selective in what you engage in.

When you start on a project, make sure it is something you are enthusiastic about.

I took up things which I was half interested in in the past. Eventually I stopped them

mid-way. 2 Because of that, I’m more conscious of how I use my time and energy

today.

2. Track your progress.

Tracking your progress helps you understand how you’re doing and gives you a target

to reach. This makes it easier to keep up with your momentum (势头). 3 Specify your KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) that you want to achieve.

3. Celebrate what you’ve done so far.

Sometimes you get discouraged. It seems like no matter how much time you spend, it’s impossible to finish it. 4 Give yourself a big hug. Celebrate the process, the completion, everything.

4. Don’t force it if it’s really not working out.

Sometimes, it just happens that you lose interest in the goal. You change; your interests change, and you get new ideas. 5 Because it just prevents more goodness from coming your way.

A. Don’t try to hold on to what you’ve done.

B. Actually everything you’ve done so far is an accomplishment!

C. Create a proje ct sheet that records your targets and your current status.

D. That means doing a plan on how much time and effort this idea will take.

E. The easiest way to complete the projects is to be flexible in your project management.

F. This resulted in a waste of time and resources which could have been better used elsewhere.

G. Many people have a habit of starting projects but not finishing them, which is

a very bad practice.

We often close ourselves off when unfortunate events happen in our lives. We try to forget the pain by pretending it doesn’t exist, but although we can try all this we want,

in the end, we can’t hide from ourselves. 1 Here are some ways you can open your heart more fully.

1. Breathe into pain

Whenever a painful situation arises, try to accept it instead of running away. 2 By using our breath we soften our experiences.

2. Embrace the uncomfortable

3 We know how fear feels in our bodies: the tension in our necks, the tightness

in our stomachs, etc. We can face these feelings of discomfort and let them show us where we need to go.

3. Spe nd time alone

For most of our lives we’re surrounded by people: our friends, colleagues, peers,

family members, loved ones, and strangers. How often do we really spend time alone? 4 You can truly open yourself and explore whatever you’d like. The golden ticket here is not to let yourself become distracted; just see what it’s like to be alone.

4. Get outside of yourself

This may seem a little contradictory to the last tip. 5 After you’ve explored the depths of yourself, you come away with a new understanding. Now, it’s time to share that — not through telling others, but through being with others.

A. We all know what anxiety feels like.

B. However, in reality they work hand in hand.

C. We need to learn to open our hearts to the potential of life.

D. When the sadness strikes, take a deep breath and face up to it.

E. You’ll add a new layer of depth and understanding into your life.

F. Lose yourself in the beauty of others; see what they can teach you about yourse lf.

G. When you spend time in solitude (独自) you’re free from the influences of other people.

(四)

If you think about your circle of friends and family members, you can certainly pick out one or more people who are not good listeners. 1 If you’re fortunate, that person is a good friend, a loved one or a teacher.

All too often, we associate the benefits of good listening skills with achieving very specific outcomes, like following the boss’s orders (aimed at getting a job promotion).

2 We think of them as something basic, which we mastered in our formal schooling, along with dictation and obeying instructions, etc. This is a shame. We should know listening skills are the focus of lifetime learning and development, related to our communication skills.

3 All of these occur because two people or groups don’t listen to each other. We don’t analyze the root problem, or work on improvement steps.

We still tend to treat listening skills the way we treat learning to walk: we think that once we’ve acquired them, we’ve got them. We are rea dy to move on to the next thing. Wrong. 4

Poor listening skills often damage effective dialogue between people. 5 If we were able to reduce misunderstandings in our conversations by 20-30%, there would be benefits in efficiency and the elimination (消除) of tiresome repetition.

A. However, think about the upside potential.

B. We’re surrounded by this kind of outcome.

C. We tend to undervalue the importance of our listening skills.

D. Think about the number of failures, misunderstandings and arguments.

E. Equally you can think of someone you know who is a very good listener.

F. The challenge of listening is determining when the speaker wants a response or advice.

G. The problem is that people and language are far more complex than the roads we travel on.

Travelling is a very enjoyable experience as it provides an opportunity to see new things. 1 The following article discusses the advantages of traveling.

Traveling gives you the opportunity to disconnect from your regular life. People all have crazy schedules, work and a family to take care of, and traveling alone or with some friends can give you distance and perhaps even make you realize how important these people are to you. 2

Another grea t benefit is the relaxation you get. 3 When you come back you feel energetic and you are happy to be back to your daily routine.

4 They will create a bond that nothing can erase no matter what happens to the friendship/relationship. You can create photo albums and when you feel nostalgic (对往事怀恋的) you can experience the trips again b y looking at your pictures.

It’s never been this cheap to travel. With increasing oil prices the cheap travel era might be coming to an end. 5 With the Internet and all the new technology, you can plan your trip exactly the way you want it. You can choose your budget, the duration of the trip and what you want to do.

A.It’s nice to enjoy a stress-free time.

B. As the saying goes, you never know what you have until you lose it.

C. When traveling with friends or family it creates memories of a lifetime.

D. Discovering different values and ways to get by in life is really interesting.

E. Going on a trip means that you are most likely going to spend time outside.

F. However, there are still many budget airlines fighting for your dollar right now.

G. There are many benefits other than enjoying yourself that can be realized when you travel.

Experiencing moments of jealousy at some time or other in your life is a very routine thing. 1 Maybe your peers are doing better than you. Or sometimes your sister probably has just achieved what you never could but always wanted to. Try out the following to deal with jealousy:

Try to list the reasons for your jealous feeling. Are you jealous because a colleague got a promotion that you thought you deserved and wanted? Or is it something else? Whatever the reason, take a few days off to stay away from the situation to calm your mind. Ask

yourself why you get jealous and what you can do to win what the other person won. 2 Try to change the way you think. Jealous people tend to compare themselves to others too much. Learn to accept the fact that everyone is different and everyone eventually has their day. 3

4 Jealousy is a negative emotion and feeling. If you feel it boiling within you, calm your mind and think of positive, happy things inste ad. Once your mind is full

of jealous thoughts, you will get so deep into it that you won’t even realize how bitter you have become as a person.

Learn to appreciate others for who they are and what they have done. Jealous people sometimes like people who do not perform as well as expected. 5 It is better to respect everyone and to get along with people who have earned or achieved more than you.

A. Learn to be positive.

B. Put yourself in their shoes.

C. So learn to accept and to forget.

D. For some, it comes early in life and for some, later.

E. They feel better about themselves in front of such people.

F. There are many things that may lead to feelings of jealousy.

G. Once you get your answer, you will eventually reach your goal for sure.

(七)

Are you someone who you think is a little too dependent? Well, you can become independent. 1 For one thing, you’ll have more freedom to do stuff. Another benefit is that you can have some quality private time. Read on to learn how to be independent.

Accept yourself. You cannot build a strong, independent you if you can’t live with yourself. Accept your personality, your opinions, your choices, and your preferences.

2 Make an effort to be a better you, and most importantly, love yourself!

3 This is a difficult step on the journey to independent living, but you must start doing things on your own. Go shopping alone, and spend at least one or two evenings

a week by yourself. Work on activities that force you to lead, not follow.

Save money. Save as much as reasonably possible. This will help you create an emergency fund, since life can be unpredictable at times. Improve the quality of your life by putting aside a set amount of money each month. 4

Realize and accept that life sometimes seems unfair. Our parents care for us so much that they do everything in their power to raise us in a fair and just environment. 5 You will be treated badly for all sorts of unfair things: your skin color, your intelligence, your height, and so on. You have to be happy in spite of that.

A. Try not to care what others think.

B. Leave your friends and family at home.

C. There are many benefits of being independent.

D. Put behind you your mistakes and learn from them.

E. However, the real world does not function on this principle.

F. You don’t have to throw away your friends to be independent.

G. There are such things as accidents, which can occur when you least expect them.

Whether you have a toddler (刚学会走路的孩子) or a teen, here are several good strategies to improve nutrition and encourage healthy eating habits.

The best way to encourage healthy eating is to eat well yourself. 1 By eating fruit and vegetables and not overindulging (溺爱) in the less nutritious stuff, you’ll be sending the right message.

2 Talk about your feelings of fullness, especially with younger children. You might say, “This is delicious, but I’m full, so I’m going to stop eating.” Simila rly, parents who are always dieting or complaining about their bodies may foster these same negative feelings in their kids. Try to keep a positive attitude towards food.

Don’t battle over food. 3 Well-intentioned parents might find themselves bargaining with kids. A better strategy is to give kids some control and to limit the kind of food available at home. Kids should decide if they are hungry and when they are full. 4

Get kids involved. Most kids will enjoy deciding what to make for dinner. 5 Some might even want to help shop for ingredients and prepare the meal. At the store, teach kids to check out food labels to begin understanding what to look for.

A. Get kids to attach importance to each meal.

B. It’s easy for food to become a sou rce of conflict.

C. School lunches can be another learning lesson for kids.

D. Kids will follow the lead of the adults they see every day.

E. Talk to them about making choices and planning a balanced meal.

F. Another way to be a good role model is to serve appropriate portions and not to overeat.

G. Parents control what food is available to the child, both at mealtimes and between meals.

Now we know that brains can grow, adapt to change, regardless of your age. To learn a new skill you’ve got to create the new circuits in the brain that support the behavior required by the skill. 1 And it’s also linked to improved memory and cognition. Then how to improve your brain power?

One way to do that is to mix things up a bit. When we do the same thing every day, those mental circuits become well-established. Impulses (神经冲动) easily fly along them.

2 This feels uncomfortable to us, but exciting to the brain.

Even driving a new route home from work, trying a new recipe or taking on a new workout routine can fire up our brain. 3

Making use of your five senses is another way to improve your brain power. It is suggested that you get dressed with your eyes closed or listen to music while smelling the roses. 4 Wash your hair with your eyes closed.

In the beginning any change is going to be uncomfortable. 5 They haven’t formed a map to guide the impulses down the new path. This is when we feel like our brains will explode. But once the new route is constructed, the unfamiliar and difficult skill will become easy.

A. This usually takes a long time.

B. Brush your teeth with your opposite hand.

C. That is because our brains can’t read the change.

D. First, we must gradually get used to that change.

E. This process leads to brain growth, better overall health.

F. But when we add something new and unfamiliar, our brains need to develop new circuits.

G. The brain then gets busy creating new circuits to help us adapt to our new environment or task.

用if,unless,before,after,until,although,though,as,since,because,so,so that 等构成含状语从句的复合句(这里要注意区分一下复杂句和复合句,复合句是包含在复杂句这个概念里面的,在下文的基础写作部分有提到)。 (3)用who,which,that,when,where,why等构成含定语从句的复合句。

The Internet has become part of young people’s life. ____1____ report shows that 38% of students often use the Internet .
