The rain came down steady and hard. Jason Storie heard it but was not worried as he prepared for a day of caving with five friends in a remote spot 80 miles northwest of his home in Duncan, on Canada’s Vancouver Island.

It was 6 a.m. on December 5, 2015. As a newcomer to the sport, Jason had gone caving only four times. This would be his toughest outing yet: a cave called Cascade. It was dangerous enough that the entrance was blocked by a locked metal door to keep the casual cavers out. About a mile long and 338 feet deep,Cascade was full of tums and barely passable tight squeezes.

Jason was new among the group, with the least experience and, at 43, older by a decade or more. It was his friend Andrew Munoz, 33, who introduced him to the sport. Unlike Jason,Andrew was an expert caver-a former caving guide, actually.

They hiked a bit before coming to the door, which sat in the ground—you’d miss it if you weren’t looking for it. It was 10 a.m. With their way lighted by headlamps, they walked down a narrow passage studded with sharp rocks. The silence was broken by a drip-drip-drip from above. Soon the drip turned into a light but steady flow, and they were wading in water up to their ankles, then to their shins.

Two hours later, they approached one of the features that made the cave unique: a narrow passage not big enough to stand up in that led into a short, tight downhill. This had a name: Bastard’s Crawl. Four streams met here, and indeed, the water was flowing more quickly. The sound of the water had turned into a roar. When they finally neared the top of the Crawl, there were barely four inches of air left between the water and the ceiling. not enough for them to keep their heads up to breathe. They came to terrifying realization that they were in danger!

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products within the next year, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Electronic cigarettes, or

e-cigarettes, deliver nicotine to the lungs by heating a liquid solution that contains nicotine and other chemicals to produce a spray that the user takes in.

As part of a survey of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles, the study compared the start of tobacco use among 222 students who had used

e-cigarettes, but not any other tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used e-cigarettes or any other tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade. The 2,530 students who initially reported never using tobacco underwent follow-up assessments after six and 12 months. Students were asked about lifetime and past six-month use of e-cigarettes or any other forms of tobacco products.

During the first six months after being surveyed, 30.7 percent of those who had used

e-cigarettes started using tobacco products, such as cigarettes, and cigars, compared to only 8.1 percent of those who had never used e-cigarettes. Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade, 25.2 percent of e-cigarette users had used tobacco products, compared to just 9.3 percent of nonusers.

“While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years, this study confirms that we should continue to closely watch teen smoking patterns,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Parents and teens should recognize that although e-cigarettes might not have the same harmful effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.”

“Recreational e-cigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco,” said Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first author on the study. “While we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking, this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could ultimately lead to the spread of smoking-related illness." _____________________________________________________________________________

In the far away land, there was a beautiful kingdom with its unique rule. The rule said, everyone may become the king, with all of his rights to govern the country for five years. After that he must be caught, his body will be tied and he will be thrown away to a remote island where the jungle is thick and there are plenty of wild animals and no human.

Then, one by one, people became the king. The first man said, ‘‘Ok, I'm ready to be the king." And he became a king for five years. What he did in his five years was enjoying his position. He threw big parties, went to many beautiful places, married many women, collected many luxurious things and did other things that pleased himself Those were all he did and he

never prepared anything for his future. Until one day the time came. One morning when the king woke up, suddenly strong soldiers came to his palace and said, " We came here under the order of constitution. Now it's time for you to be thrown away to the remote island." The king wasn't surprised but he felt that time passed by too fast. He had enjoyed himself in the past five years but now he had to accept his destiny with tears in his eyes. The soldiers sent him to the dangerous island and left. All they heard was the voices of the wild animals and the long scream of the former king; and then silent again.

Every other king was the same until a young man came and declare his wish. By the constitution he was granted his wish. He would be a hug for five years before being thrown away to the island. But if other kings would follow their passion for having fun, he didn't. The king was always seen to be thinking.

A few months ago nobody knew for sure what would happen inside Windsor Place, a nursing home, when it became home to a class of kindergartners. Never before had a Kansas school or nursing home tried this — mixing the old and young in a way for each to learn from the other.

Sure, organizers hoped some good things would happen. But as they watched the class of 21 students in their white, paper graduation caps, they said they didn’t expect this. They couldn’t have known ahead of time the transformations, in the young and old, they would see through seasons.

The kids have learned sympathy, kindness and how to be patient as they wait behind someone in a wheelchair or using a walker. At home they talk about how the very young and old are alike and how Grandma or Grandpa lived when they were young. They’ve also become strong readers, progressing from the everyday praise and guidance of the seniors.

“If you look at our children, they’re just different,” said Dawn Crow, whose daughter Lily went to see the seniors during Christmas break because she thought they’d be lonely. “I think my child has learned so much more than 123s and ABCs. Every day we send our kids there, we feel like we’ve been given a gift.”

Those who live at Windsor Place say they are the ones who have been given the gift. Marian Nelson has no grandchildren of her own. “These kids have filled a void(空虚感) in me,” the

87-year-old said.

Stories like these have led other places to look at the program and consider carrying it out themselves. Michelle Foreman, a board member of a senior center in Alaska, said when she visited Windsor Place she cried nearly half the time she was there.

“One of the things we have not done right in our society is that we have not sent the right message to our senior population,” Foreman said. “We need them to pass on valuable things to our next generation.”

A class pet can be an invaluable experience for elementary school children. The pet can teach responsibility, build a connection to the classroom, serve as a motivator, and be something for the children to love. If the teacher is willing to take on the added responsibility of caring for an animal in addition to all of the children in the classroom, a class pet can be a wonderful addition to a class.

Many factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing a class pet. It cannot be too big, as classrooms generally have limited space. Cost should also be considered since the teacher will likely have to pay for the pet, its food and its habitat. It must also be somewhat hardy (耐寒的). Each particular type of animal has its advantages and disadvantages, and a teacher must weigh these and make a decision about which one is right for his or her class.

Birds are physically more delicate (娇养) than many other animals. They will not survive in drafts (气流) and need a somewhat regulated temperature in their environment. Many birds are quite social and do best with other birds or when being handled routinely by people who can be appropriate with them. Young children are not likely to have the skill to handle a bird without harming it, making it a poor choice for a class pet.

Some reptiles are beautiful to look at but are delicate, afraid of cold, light sensitivity or poisonous and shouldn’t be handled by children. Others are more hardy but require expensive habitats. Most snakes eat rats and mice, which may be a frightening thing for small children to witness.

A hardy fish, such as a betta, is a good low-cost option for a class pet. They are obviously not huggable or able to be caught by children. Besides, they are inexpensive, have relatively long life spans, and can be kept in a simple fish bowl.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”

“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have

nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ”

“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time.By great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Robert to the shore.

Thus, Robert’s life was saved.Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They said sorry to Henry for their

rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home togetheras usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.

The last class of my old professor' s life had only one student. I was the student. The last class took place once a week in his house,by a window in the study, The class met on Tuesdays. It began after breakfast. The subject was The Meaning of Life. It was taught from experience. No grades were given, but there were oral exams each week. You were expected to respond Lo questions, and you were expected to ask questions of your own. You were also required to perform physical tasks now and then, such as lifting the professor' s head to a comfortable spot on the pillow or placing his glasses on the bridge of his nose. Kissing him good - bye earned you extra credit. No books were required, yet many topics were covered, including love, work, community, family, aging, forgiveness, and, finally, death.

I look back sometimes at the person I was before I rediscovered my old professor. I want to talk to that person. I want to tell him what to look out for, what mistakes to avoid. I want to tell him to be more open, to ignore the tricks of advertised values,to pay attention when your loved ones are speaking,as if it were the last time you might hear them. Mostly I want to tell that person to get on an airplane and visit a gentle old man in West Newton,Massachusetts sooner rather than later, before that old man gets sick and loses his ability to dance. I know I cannot do this. None of us can undo what we’ve done,or relive a life already recorded. But if Professor Morris Schwartz

taught me anything at all,it was this: there is no such thing as" too late" in life. He was changing until the day he said good - bye.

I was doing a big clean-up recently and my kids were helping when my son, Freddo, came across a knotted handkerchief with an old dark brown coin inside. "Mum, can I have this? Can I play with this coin" he asked. I took one look and was immediately transported to another time.

In 1991, there was a time when my friend and I worked in a backward African country, Niger, hit by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place--the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of nursing work there, we moved on to work at a health clinic in neighbouring country, Burkina Faso. "It's much greener in Burkina. Even the Coke tastes better" the locals assured us.

Yet the fact was quite the opposite. Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina, we began to unload. I was reaching for my larger piece of luggage when, out of the darkness, a motorbike with two men approached slowly. Without warning, one of the men grabbed my daypack as the

motorbike swept close by. Within seconds, the pair were out of sight, swallowed up by the night.

With my passport, money, traveller's cheques all in the bag, I was in deep trouble. How frustrating! All I wanted was to leave this hellhole! Then, walking through Burkina's streets one day, I was stopped by an old woman who thrust her hand in my face. "Cadeau ( 'gift' in French)! Cadeau!”she cried. I'd had enough! I was extremely tired of the country: its poverty, its thieves, the heat, the dust and... everything! I told her angrily and firmly in French, “I have no 'Cadeau'. I have no money. A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I can't get out of your country.

I cannot give you anything. NOTHING!’The beggar woman listened attentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave a broad smile.

She reached into the pockets of her dress. “Then I will give you a cadeau,”she announced. Kindly, she placed an old dark brown coin in my hand. In surprise,I looked at the coin, then at the woman. At that moment, I felt rather ashamed, ashamed of my terrible attitude towards the old woman. In spite of her poverty, she was able to give me something priceless. I had taken it for granted that beggars would only receive something from others, yet the coin from the beggar woman in Burkina truly changed my view towards them, and her smile hit the deepest of my heart.

There was a slight touch on my hand; looking down, I saw my son looking at me, curious. “Mum,can I have this? Can I play with this coin?”he repeated. “You can't play with it, honey.” I touched my son on the head and said slowly,“This one's special. It is an unforgettable precious memory to me. Come and let me tell you a story."

I was already at the mall door when Mathew caught up with me. “Do you have $750 plus $25 for delivery, ma’am?” “Yes. Yes. That's about all I have,” “Well then, you just have your husband sitting at the front gate on Friday morning around 10 o’clock so he can be there when my Dad and I come to unload his new canoe. We’ll even put a bow on it for his birthday.” I started to cry. My old hand shook as I wrote out my cheque.

“Ma’am. There’s something you should know. This store was my Grandpa’s and the canoe had been ordered by him. He always promised to retire one day. Said he wanted to spend time relaxing and out fishing in a canoe.” He swallowed hard. “My Grandpa died, sudden-like, just last week. He was only 68 years old. I think he’d be mighty happy that your husband will get this canoe. You just have to make sure he uses it a lot, okay? Promise?” “I promise,” I said as I dashed off to look for my dear sweet husband.

It’s kind of a family tradition we have.We go every year because we like to visit some family members living in Florida. There has never been a year when we’ve missed a trip to Florida for the holidays. I was so excited to go on this trip because Christmas is my favorite holiday, but to top it off I was going to get to celebrate it with my family. The next morning,my mother entered my room.“Stacy, wake up!We need to go to the airport so that we can get our plane tickets to Florida before they sell out.” I jumped out of bed and got ready as fast as I could. When we were on our way to the airport,I couldn’t stop talking and smiling because I was too excited about getting our tickets. “Aren’t you just excited to go to Florida” I asked. “Yes, I am.We can finally catch up with the family and drink hot cocoa,”responded my moth er. The airport was so crowded. Some people were leaving to other countries and others were just visiting for the holiday. There was such a huge line in the airport because so many different people were buying plane tickets.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem,”Arthur said. “I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.” “Is there something I can do to help?”Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.” “No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.” The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the loud noise of an alarm. It was from the bank. There had been a robbery! Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?”But everyone had a different answer. Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him. She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?”He thought.“The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!” Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run. Paragraph 1 :

It was the lovely month of February, when everyone was sick of the snow, and spring still felt light years away. The cold air on windows during February, however, always did make for good pictures in the stream of my breath. Every year, we invite the children to our club to make cookies or chocolate at holiday times. The children are always excited to come back and have memorized the rules by now. We explain how to spoon the different-colored chocolates into the heart-shaped molds, and the kids jump right into the project, even the youngest ones, who are too short to reach the counter. On this day, there was a boy I was drawn to. He was ten, but his attitude told the story of a boy who had been hardened (使刚毅) by the world and all the trouble that he suffered from. His face looked much older than his age. I especially noticed the lollipop(棒棒糖)he was making. Most of the children had finished with their projects. There wasn’t m uch chocolate left. He took the remaining spoonfuls of all the different colors, which were so jumbled(混乱的)that a person could not see where one color started and the next ended. It seemed to him that all that mattered was that he was able to finish his chocolate. Two hours had passed and it was time for everyone to go. Each of the children was given a bag, and they all split the candy amongst themselves to take with them. The ten-year-old boy came back over to me after he had gotten his share of candy. He noticed my hands were empty. Why didn't you take any? "he asked “I wanted to make sure there was enough for everyone else, ”I said “Oh,” he replied, but I could see he didn’t really accept my answer. As everyone got ready to leave, I was occupied with my work and didn’t see the boy staring at me. I got a hug from each of the smiling children as they slipped out of the door. My ten-year-old friend was the last to go. By now, I had noticed the little tough guy looking at me. He came up to me again, this time slowly, looking around to make sure no one was watching. Paragraph 1 This is for you, " he said, as he handed me a piece of candy. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 I have been keeping that lollipop ever since _______________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________

山川又可以细分为:forest, mountains, caves, islands and volcanoes, paths, rivers, sea。

高频短语–名词和形容词 * Magnificent forest of tall trees高大的森林 * Like a crowd of vivid green umbrellas像一群鲜艳的绿色雨伞* Emerald /?em(?)r?ld/ green leaves翠绿的叶子 * Vivid green stems鲜艳的绿色茎 * Like fluttering, emerald ribbons像飘动的翡翠丝带 * Blazing carpet of bluebells耀眼的风信子 * Red and orange berries红色和橙色浆果

Mom was a good cook. No, I take that back. She was a great cook. She could take a little hamburger a few potatoes and some tomatoes to make a feast that would make everyone drool(流口水) .And the dishes she could do with chicken well, it makes my mouth water to think about her delicious fried chicken. Her homemade chili sauce was second to none. Her bottled peaches were better than candies. When I was a little girl I once offered to make my sister Kathy’s bed for a week if she would give me the last slice of toast made with Moms homemade bread and pineapple jam. Kathy w ouldn’t go for it. She prefe rred to eat the toast. There is no doubt that Mom was a great cook most of the time. But if you put a steak in her pan, she would turn it into a texture(口感) of shoe leather. Of course, she didn’t do that on purpose She really did try her best. The night before I was married, she thought she was giving me a special treat by preparing a thick steak. It tasted as terrible as usual. Several months later, my elder brother Bud took me out for lunch and ordered steaks. I wasn’t excited, but since he was paying I figured I could try a few bites. When the waitress served our steaks, I was surprised at how good they smelled .Mom's steaks never smelled like that. Suddenly, I understood why others spoke of steak fondly. I finished my steak greedily, and even stole a bite of Bud’s."“ You k now," I said to Bud, patting my stomach with real satisfaction, "I used to think Mom was a great cook. But it's hard to believe her steaks come from the same animal as these steaks. Of course she is, Bud said. "But think about it. She grew up during a time when her family was very poor. That’s when she learned to cook. How often do you think they had steak? Probably not very often, I guessed Paragraph 1 “Probably never,”Bud said . _____________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: But then it occurred to me that "great” do esn' t mean" perfect” _____________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 1: “ Probably never," Bud said.“ And when I was a little boy and Dad was in the army, don't remember ever having steak. It's only after our youngest sister was born that Mom and Dad could afford steak. So it isn’t that Mom isn't a good cook. It's just that she didn’t have a lot of experience of cooking steak. That’s the reason for my mother’s having a weakness in the kitchen. It was difficult for me to understand this at first, especially after we enjoyed Moms incredible fried chicken the day before. Paragraph 2 But then it occurred to me that“ great” doesn' t mean" perfe ct”. It just means" great” It's great of Mom to have cooked delicious food for us for years and make everyone feel happy. But what did I do for her? I determined to give Mom a surprise. After learning from a friend, I prepared a big dinner for Mom .When she saw the nice steak and had her first bite of it, a happy smile appeared on her face. 1
