Abstract
This report is based on Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory. Strategies to the existing translation problem are given according to the analysis of the characteristics of the language and the text of project description. The author describes and analyses the problems that the translator encounters with during the translation practice of “Report on Environmental Influence”.
The report consists of five parts. The first part gives a brief introduction to the original text, including some background information and the significance of the translation. The second part focuses on the task description, the language features are analyzed and requirements from the entrusting party are listed. The third part covers the preparation work, which includes the translation plan, the tools and resources used in the process of the translation, the theory guiding in the translation process, the quality control, evaluation from the entrusting party, etc. The forth part is the central part of the report. It is about the key points in the translation process: the problems in the translation and the solutions to the problems, the corresponding methods that are clearly explained with examples. There are a lot of figures, long Chinese sentences and rhetorical devices in the source text; the specific translation methods adopted in this translation practice report are literal translation, free translation, omission and amplification, etc for solving these problems. The last part is conclusion in which the author summarized the translation process and pointed out the limitations of the translation practice and gave suggestions for the future translation and studies.
Through the analysis and conclusion about the translation methods, the author has a better understanding of Functional Equivalence and also hopes the translation experience would be great help in the next translation task.
