An Eye-Witness Account of a Traffic Accident
It was the morning of April 6th, 2003. At about 7:30, I went to school by bike as usual. It was a rainy day and the road was slippery. On the way, I noticed a boy riding in front of me, talking loudly with his friends. He didn’t wear a raincoat; instead he held an umbrella in one hand, and rode with another hand. As he turned left to Guangming Road, he failed to see a car coming from behind a truck parked on the corner. Suddenly I heard a big noise and saw an umbrella thrown away. The boy was knocked down by the car. I was completely shocked.
I think the boy’s absent-mindedness accounted much for the accident. He was talking all the time and dangerously used an umbrella while riding a bike. The weather also played a role in the tragedy. The third cause was the improperly parked truck, which was big enough to make the road conditions invisible to the students who were going to make a turn. All these contributed to this accident.
Reduce Waste on Campus
For college students, the campus should be a holy place to study in and a comfortable place to live. Yet, you can see the phenomenon of waste everywhere. In the dining hall, students buy much more food than what they can eat and dump the leftover. In the classroom you can see blank paper on the floor and in the washing closet, water keeps dripping but the students don’t bother to turn the faucets off.
Waste on campus may bring really serio us consequences. For students themselves, it’s not just money. What they have for med is a bad habit of wasting which will accompany them into their future life. For the whole society, which is suffering from overpopulation, waste is highly likely to be a case for energy crises or water supply shortage.
In order to reduce waste on campus, we college students should start the anti-waste campaign with ourselves. Thrift has been a good virtue in China for thousands of years and thrifty people are always respected by all the people Thus, mind the trifles beside ourselves, try to avoid waste around us and moreover, spread the idea of thrift and let it take root in everybody’s heart.
Mobile Phone Uses Should Be Restricted in Library

The improper use of mobile phones is becoming increasingly serious in the library. Many students are found talking loudly on phones or taking a phone in audible ringing mode into the library.
There is no doubt that those poor manners have a negative impact on library users. For one thing, mobile phones are a distraction for those users, for they can hardly focus on reading. For another, such behavior causes disturbance to other people. It's very important for the users to maintain a quiet atmosphere since the library is a place for study and research.
Restriction to mobile phone uses in the library helps to create an excellent atmosphere and does good to all library users. So all students should comply with library regulations and keep quiet in the library. If they do need to use mobile phones, they can set their mobile phones in the silence mode and make phone calls in designated areas, such as restrooms, photocopier rooms and the elevator area.

Helping strangers has always been considered a treasured virtue of human kind. On the one hand, we need help from others throughout our life, no matter when we travel to other places or stay at home. On the other hand, helping others brings us tremendous happiness. We feel great joy when we are trusted and needed by others. Therefore, it is highly recommended that we help strangers when possible.
However, some people are cautious and would rather not help strangers because it can sometimes put us into trouble. They say some strangers are just cheats who pretend to be pitiful in order to take advantage of our sympathy. Helping them would put us in danger. Furthermore, sometimes we are not able to provide the help needed. For example, if we can't swim, it is dangerous to help someone being drowned.
In my opinion, we should still try our best to help strangers if possible, though we should also learn to protect ourselves from being harmed in the process.

Students tend to use computers more and more nowadays. Reading this chart, we can find that the average number of hours a student spends on the computer per week has increased sharply. In 1990, it was less than 2 hours; and in 1995, it increased to almost 4 hours, and in 2000, the number soared to 20 hours.
Obviously, computers are becoming more and more popular. There are several reasons
for this. First, computers facilitate us in more aspects of life. Also, the fast development of the Internet enlarges our demands for using computers. We can easily contact with friends in remote places through the Internet. Besides, the prices of computers are getting lower and lower, which enables more students to purchase them.
However, there still exist some problems, such as poor quality, out-of-date designs and so on. And how to balance the time between using computers and studying is also a serious problem.
Anyhow, we will benefit a lot from computers as long as we use them properly.
Ownership of Houses in a Big City in China

From 1990 to 2000, great changes have taken place in the ownership of houses in cities in China. While the number of state-owned houses decreased, that of private houses increased. In 1990, there were seventy-five percent state-owned houses and only twenty-percent private houses. However, in 2000, the proportion of state-owned housed reduced to twenty percent and that of private houses increased to eighty percent.
There are some reasons for the great changes. Firstly, I think the development of the economy is one reason. Thanks to the development of the economy, people earn more money than before. So they can set aside some money to by houses. Secondly, the measures the government adopts have encouraged people to consume. Nowadays, people can buy new houses with the help of loans from banks. There may be some other reasons.
These changes reflect the rising living standard of the people, which will, in turn, bring about changes in people’s consumption idea- to consume on credit.
Cultural Immersion
In the picture there is a mature American girl who wears traditional Chinese costume. Her bright smile perfectly matches the traditional Chinese clothes, hat, necklace, etc, all of which seem to belong to a Chinese minority. In such a simple way, the design of the picture managed to reflect rapidly growing exchanges between different cultures, especially between the Chinese and the western cultures.
Most people would attach great importance to this phenomenon. They believe that exchanges between these two distinguished cultures will lead to better understanding between China and the western world, which will inevitably bring tremendous changes to our future world. There is no doubt that with better understanding things like confrontation, conflicts andwars can be avoided and that the blend of different cultures will lead to lasting peace and prosperity of the world.
As a college student, I firmly believe that globalization is the tendency of today's world and there is nothing that can hold it back. The ideas that western cultures would be a threat to the traditional Chinese cultures and they would be abandoned gradually have been out of date. What we ought to think seriously about is probably not whether this kind of blend is needed or not, but what we could do in order to let this process make positive contributions to the development of the Chinese cultures, and how we can make the traditional Chinese culture known to the world and be accepted by the world. That is the very idea that the designer of the picture wants to tell us. It is probable that only in this way will the balance of exchanges be kept and both sides benefit from this process of globalization.
This drawing depicts the plight of elderly parents. As we can see from the cartoon, when the New Year comes, the old couple are sitting at the dinner table in disappointment and sadness, because no one comes back to celebrate the occasion together with them. Although they have received a lot of presents from their adult children, the miserable feeling has obviously deprived them of their appetite, since what they want most is nothing but sincere love from their children and grandchildren.
The moral of this drawing is not difficult to seek. Nowadays, younger generation is too occupied with their affairs or grows too independent to feel free living with their parents. Rarely can the aging parents have a chance to enjoy some happy hours with them. When festivals approach, it is not unusual for adult children to send presents instead of visiting their parents in person. However, they actually fail to realize the fact that their presence, not presents, are the
best and maybe the only desired gifts for their parents.
In conclusion, we should learn the moral of this cartoon by heart, and remind ourselves of the loneliness and helplessness of the aging parents. We should never shy away from the responsibility of taking good care of them in their senior years, physically and mentally.
Tourism and Environment Pollution
As is vividly depicted in the cartoon above, a boat, which is carrying two tourists who are casually casting wastes into the water, is floating on a filthy river in view of the incredible amount of rubbish, including food packages, waste bottles, cans, fishbone, etc. It’s a nasty scene t o see, yet the two on the boat seem to be enjoying their sightseeing. The whole picture reveals the sarcastic consequences that the blooming of tourism has on the ecological environment.
As a result of the economic prosperity and the widespread ideology that traveling opens horizon, people tend to attach greater importance to sightseeing than what’s necessary. Furthermore, it’s almost always true that more visits to a site bring more littering and pollution. As a consequence, environment of the touring resorts, which are supposed to be attractive and breathtaking, has suffered plenty of damage from the misconducts of the tourists. Littering, among others, has managed to reduce the place of spectacular view to a dump land. In the long run, it will not be simply possible for anyone to enjoy himself or herself in the wild or open air, nor could thefollowing generation grow up in a naturally beautiful environment. Hence, it would make great sense to put environmental protection on the agenda immediately.
In conclusion, measures should be taken without any delay to address the problem before we have to pay an even greater price for the adverse impact of the development of the tourism. What should be done first is to make more people aware of the significance of environment protection. Meanwhile, related laws must be laid down to guarantee the protection effort will not get frustrated, and to penalize those who violate the rules to different degrees. Only in this
way could we enjoy a wonderfully natural sightseeing at present and a boom of sustainable, fast-growing tourist industry.
On Opportunity and Success
“When people succeed, it is because of hard work, Luck has nothing to do with success.” Do you agree or disagree with the quotation above? Use specific examples to explain your position. When people succeed, it is because of hard work, but luck has a lot to do with it, too. Success without some luck is almost impossible. The French emperor Napoleon said of one of his generals, “I know he’s good. But is he lucky?” Napoleon knew that all the hard work and talent in the world can’t make up for bad luck. However, hard work can invite good luck.
When it comes to success, luck can mean being in the right place to meet someone, or having the right skills to get a job done. It might mean turning down an offer and then having a better offer come along. Nothing can replace hard work, but working hard also means you’re preparing yourself for opportunity. Opportunity very often depends on luck.
How many of the great inventions and discoveries came about through a lucky mistake or a lucky chance?
One of the biggest lucky mistakes in history is Columbus’ so-called discovery of America. He enriched his sponsors and changed history, but he was really looking for India. However, Columbus’ chance discovery wasn’t pure luck. It was backed up by years of studying and calculating. He worked hard to prove his theory that the world was round.
On the other hand, think about an actress who’s spen t years learning and working at her craft. When she finally has good luck and becomes a success, she will handle stardom better, she knows she earns it. People who work hard help make their own luck by being ready opportunity knocks. When it comes to success, I think that hard work and luck so hand in hand.
Part-time Jobs for College Students
In some countries, teenagers have jobs while they are still students. Do you think this is a good idea? Support your opinion by using specific reasons and details.
In many countries it is common for teenagers to take part-time jobs while they are still in high school, while in other societies this is virtually unheard of. In the latter situation, students are expected to spend all of their time on their studies and consider schoolwork their "job". In my opinion, students benefit more from a more balanced lifestyle, which may include working at a part-time job. Therefore, I believe that it is a good idea for students to work while studying. While it is true that a student's most important goal must be to learn and to do well at his studies, it does not need to be the only goal. In fact, a life which consists of only study is not balanced and may cause the student to miss out on other valuable learning experiences.
In addition to bringing more balance to a student's life, part-time work can broaden his range of experience. He will have the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and will be faced with a wider variety of problems to solve. Furthermore, work helps a student to develop greater independence, and earning his own pocket money can teach him how to handle his finances. Finally, a part-time job can help a student to develop a greater sense of responsibility, both for his own work and for that of the team he works with.
For all of these reasons, I firmly believe that most students would benefit from taking a part-time job while they are in high school. Of course, they must be careful not to let it take up too much of their time because study is still their primary responsibility. In sum, living a balanced life is the best way to be successful.
