2022届高考英语备考：连词Before的用法面面观 Before是英语中的一个常见词，可以用作介词、副词与连词，其基本含义是“在……之前”。这一基本含义在before的具体使用中可以引申出多种意义，而传达这些意义的表达中也有不少词块。掌握这些意义与词块，可以助力我们的阅读理解，同时也可让我们的书面表达更加地道与丰富。 笔者在这里梳理出连词before 的七种用法以及六种常见词块，期望帮助同学们对before有一个全面而深刻的认识。 before 的七种用法 结合历年高考真题以及日常的阅读语篇，before的用法概括起来有以下七种。 1.表示“在……之前” 这是before的基本含义。该含义说明两个时间或两个事件的前后关系，有时也可以译为“先……再/后……”。例如：Check your bicycle brakes before you ride.骑车前检查一下你自行车的刹车。（先检查自行车的刹车，再骑） 2.表示“……才……” 强调before引导从句中的动作发生得太慢或太晚。例如：The bus driver almost knocked me down before he saw me.巴士司机差点把我撞到，才看到我。 3.表示“还没来得及……就……”“未……就……” 强调主句的动作发生得过早或过快。例如：It became dark before we finished our task.我们还未完成任务，天就黑了。 4.表示“就……”“便……” 强调从句动作发生得早或快。在表示该种含义的句子中，主句中的谓语动词多是否定形式，或者主句中含有强调数量少的词。例如：It hadn’t rained long before it cleared up. 雨沒下多久，天就放晴了。 5.表示“趁着还没有……” 该用法的before引导的从句虽然是肯定形式，但是传达出否定意义。例如：Work hard before you are old. 趁着还没老，努力工作。 6.表示“宁愿……也不……”
我们最初接触的Before一般是作为介词使用的，一般表示空间上的“在…之前”。 例如：The tea has been set before her. 茶已经摆在她面前了。 Before作为介词时，需要注意的是，一般不用在表示具体时间的词之前。比如，两年之前，我们用two years ago，而不能说*before two years. Before作为介词时，有一个特殊用法需要注意，即before long表示“不久之后”。 例如：Before long he got married. 不久之后他就结婚了。 Before作为连词时，一般意为“在…之前”，用来引导时间状语从句。引导的从句中的动作一般发生在主句动作之后。 Before作为连词时的用法较为复杂，具体要点如下： 一、主句用一般现在时/一般将来时, 从句用一般现在时。 例如：You should let me explain what I did before you criticize me. 在你批评我之前，你应该让我解释一下我做过什么。 二、主句用过去完成时,从句用一般过去时。一般翻译为“在…之前就…”。 例如：1. His father had died before he was born. 他父亲在他出生之前就已经去世了。
2. She had finished her homework before her mother returned.她在妈妈返回之前就已经把作业完成了。 三、主句用一般过去时,从句用过去完成时。从句用过去完成时表示一个过去没有完成或没来得及做的、时间顺序在后的动作，常译为“★还没（来得及）…就…★”。 例如：1. He rushed out of the office before I had realized what was happening. 我还没意识到发生了什么事，他就冲出去了。 2. She left before I had had a chance to speak to her. 我还没来得及跟她说话，她就离开了。 四、主句用一般过去时,从句用一般过去时。（不强调时间的先后，只是一般性地叙述事实。） ★注意：许多语法格式并没有局限性，大多数时候只是为表述服务的。语法规则多为总结日常用语而来，多数是描写性质的，我们可以从一些日常用语中提炼出一些语法规则，但切不可生搬硬套某些语法规则来生造出一些并不存在的句子。 例如：1. She didn't understand me before I explained it to her. 在我向她解释之前，她不理解我的意思。 2. His father died before he was born.（注意与第二条规则中例句对比）他出生之前，他父亲就去世了。
