浅析英语委婉语语用功能 [摘要] 委婉语是人类社会中普遍存在的一种语言现象，是语言使用中人们协调人际关系的一个重要手段。本文将从委婉语的语用特征和语用功能的视角来分析英语委婉语，以揭示其语言本质和语用因素对其产生的影响。 [关键词] 英语委婉语语用特征语用功能 一、英语委婉语概述 l6世纪80年代初，作家乔治·布朗特首先使用“euphemism”一词。这个词来源于希腊语。其前缀eu意为good，pleasant（好的、善意的），词根pheme意为speech（言语）。euphemism 就是优雅动听的话、吉利话。委婉语可谓源远流长。它的产生最初与宗教有关，在古希腊和古罗马，由于神的名字被认为是神的化身，提到名字就亵渎神灵。于是，人们便借助委婉语来称呼神。上帝的名Jehovah被代之以Holy One （万圣者），the External（永生者），the Creator（创世纪者），the Maker（造物主），the Savior（救世主）等。随着社会发展，委婉语的使用范围从宗教延伸到其它领域。在l8、l9两个世纪，委婉语在英国国内外迅速发展。从一开始清教徒以关心语言闻名于世，他们推行禁止使用亵渎语言的法律。至l9世纪，社交活动中讲究语言温文尔雅被视作基本美德之一。20世纪，历经两次世界大战之后，美国英语发生了巨大变化，80年代，美国委婉语在金钱、疾病、政治和战争等话题中用得最多。 二、英语委婉语的语用特征 1.时代性 语言的变化取决于社会的需要和发展，因此时代性也称可变性。从历时的观点看，语言处在不断变化中，新词不断出现，旧词逐渐消失。委婉语更是这样。例如“她怀孕了”，在19世纪委婉表达为cancel all her social engagements；be an interesting condition；be in a delicate condition。到了20世纪，随着人们思想的不断开放，“怀孕”被直率地表达为be in a family way；be pregnant。维多利亚女王时代，人体胸部以下的名称都在忌讳之列，胸和腿都不能讲，于是就有以white meat和black meat分别表示餐桌上的chicken breast和chick leg。这类委婉语现在已经不用了。由此可见，由于社会生活的不断变更，理性的思考代替了神秘的掩饰，一些所谓肮脏的字眼登堂入室。 2.语域变异性 在不同的语境或同一语境中，不同的年龄、身份、地位或受教育程度的人的委婉语表达也不尽相同。例如，形容某人发疯有三种不同的委婉语说法：Tom is a psychological patient.（正式、文雅）；Tom is soft in head.（口语化）；Tom has a screw missing.（戏谑幽默）。美国英语中，“厕所”的委婉语表达方式有很多种，例如：
