Music can make us feel happy or peaceful, energize us to dance,or move us to tears. As an orchestra conductor,Amy Andersson allows people to experience the many feelings that music can inspire.

Andersson fell in love with music as a child. She sang in school choirs and musicals starting in first grade, began studying piano at age seven, and started composing at age nine.Although her school district had no orchestra, she says, “I bought many recordings of the world's great orchestras and conductors and listened to them for hours on end.”

During a concert, the audience sees the back of a conductor and the arm movements she or he uses to lead the orchestra. What audiences do not see is all the work the conductor has done beforehand to prepare for the performance—first alone, and then in rehearsals(排练)with the orchestra.

Months before a concert,Andersson studies a piece of music by playing it on the piano. She decides how she wants each section to sound.Shouldn't be fast or slow?Loud or soft? She listens to recordings, reads about the composer's life, and reviews historical events that would have influenced the composer. Her goal is to recreate the music as the composer intended.

Each instrument contributes unique sounds to a musical performance.Although it is not necessary for conductors to know how to play all of the instruments, they must be familiar with the range and sound of each instrument in the orchestra.

To help young musicians understand how to play the music,Andersson might tell them to imagine a ship being tossed(颠簸)by waves.

Andersson is happy knowing that she and the musicians have changed lives for the better, uplifted spirits, and brought joy into ordinary days.

Back in 1969,it was the ApolloⅡcrew who flew to the moon in a spaceship. When US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped foot on the moon, they were the first.Meanwhile, their fellow astronaut Michael Collins circled the moon in their spaceship, named Columbia.

When Armstrong and Aldrin were done with their walk, they returned to the command module, and back to Earth. That part of the spaceship is on view at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington,D.C.But,if you cannot get to Washington, soon you will be able to see Columbia on your computer or your smartphone.

Digital scientists are scanning the inside of Columbia. They are creating an online model,in three dimensions,or“3D” .By looking at these photographs, you will be able to see outer space the way the astronauts did.It will be like sitting in their seats.

Want your very own Columbia? You will be able to print a 3D copy of Columbia.Experts say anyone can make a lifesized model. But they expect most people to make smaller models of the 320 cm×400 cm(11*×13*)command module.

Scientists are using special 3D technology to scan the inside. They use cameras on long arms to take the photographs. The thousands of photographs taken will be combined with 50 laser scans.

What would it be like to sit inside Columbia and take a look around? All the images will be loaded into software that allows you to look around the module on a computer screen. The user will be able to see Columbia both inside and out.The Smithsonian says that the 3D technology gives the user ways to see things they cannot see at the museum. And it will give information that even the museum curators(馆长)have not seen before.

“With the command module,no one has been inside since it came into the collection,” says Adam Metallo,Smithsonian 3D imaging specialist.“Now the information we capture can give anyone in the world a view of what it looks like inside this incredible piece of history.”

I wanted to share something that put a smile on my face this morning. You will know what a difference a simple act of kindness makes to a person.

My company ranks in the top 10 among the most diverse (各色各样的) companies in America. With this being the case, a lot of times we run into situations where there is a language impediment.

Last week while I was at work, one of my co-workers twisted her wrist while lifting something that might have been too heavy for her. This particular co-worker of mine speaks little English and my Spanish needs “much” work. But we have never had a problem with communication.

When I ran into her shortly after her injury, I took a look and I knew that a simple first aid routine was in order. With me being an athlete, I knew that a simple procedure called “RICE” (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) was what she needed until she was able to get to the doctor. With little understanding of what I was doing, she trusted that I meant to help.

Today she came up to me while I was getting my breakfast, and without a word she hugged me and patted me on my back. When I asked why the wonderful affection, she simply said “thank you for taking care of my arm when I got hurt”.She went on to tell me that her doctor told her putting ice on her injury was a good thing but she never would have known to do it.

As she was telling me this, I saw how my random act of kindness had had an impact on her. With me just taking an extra minute out of my day to help her, I made a friend. This time I opened my arms and hugged her and I was thankful to have such a moment because you see, this lady has served me breakfast every day for the last four years and I had never exchanged more than greetings and breakfast orders with her.

The latest Chinese “god song” (an Internet term to describe pop songs that spread virally through the Internet) is still stirring up fierce debates between those who view it as a milestone for Chinese pop music going global and those who regard it as a bad image of China.

Last week, Little Apple, written and performed by Chopsticks Brothers, won the AMA International Song Award and the_duo performed the song at the 2014 American

Music Awards in Los Angeles.Another Chinese pop singer, Zhang Jie, won the International Artist Award.

But while fans of these singers are thinking highly of the awards and the performance by Chopsticks Brothers at the AMA celebration, there are others who are less excited. They have questioned the value of the awards and what effects it will have on Chinese culture's “going abroad”, claiming it may leave foreign audiences with a poor impression of Chinese pop music, and even Chinese culture.

The Little Apple phenomenon, both home and abroad, can be more easily understood and judged if we look at it from a business perspective rather than a cultural perspective. The professional promoters behind the duo have developed a clear strategy to promote the duo and their works, not just this particular song.Little Apple was originally released to promote the duo's film Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon.

From the very beginning a viral marketing strategy was used to promote the song, which immediately went viral on the Internet due to its repetitive rhythm, easy -to-remember lyrics, simple and funny dance and, most importantly, grass roots nature. The video accumulated more than 1 billion hits on China's major video websites.

Although the song was generally dismissed by music professionals who criticized it as “musical junk food”,Little Apple's popularity nationally paved the way for promoting the duo internationally.

Dear_Carl,

I_am_writing_to_tell_you_something_about_the_square_dance_in_China.In the morning or after dinner, people, especially elderly women, will gather in squares to dance to popular music.More and more young people are also joining in now.

There are many reasons behind its popularity.First of all,China has made great progress in its social and economical development in the past decades, and people have more time and energy to enjoy themselves.Besides, doing the square dance is a good way for people to get fit.

However, because dancers play loud music and occupy lots of public places, they annoy many people.Maybe square dancers need to make some changes.

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

Their paintings were not as detailed as those of earlier painters. At first, many people disliked this style of painting and became very angry about it. They said that the painters were careless and their paintings were ridiculous. Modern Art(29th century to today) At the time they were created, the Impressionist paintings were controversial, but today they are accepted as the beginning of what we call "modern art".
