When faced with difficult situations in their lives, many people find them too challenging and give up, especially on their life dreams. But not for Gabriel Heredia.

Gabrrel is a 21-year-old Argentinean barber(阿根廷理发师)who was born without hands. But he was able to grow up happy and independent because he always had the support of friends and family. In fact, his inspiration for such work was his mother, who is a hairdresser. At the age of 14, he began to take interest in her work and learned all kinds of hair cutting skills from her. Although he first saw it as an interest, Gabriel quickly decided that this was his dream job.

Gabriel's family soon helped him open his first barbershop in San Isidro, Peru, which he worked at for one and a half years. There, he met Zlatan Gomez, the president of Argentina Corta, an organization for barbers to connect, do charity (慈善) work, and teach hairdressing. Later, Gabriel became part of Argentina Corta, offering his services to people of all ages so they can build up the skills they need to get a job.

Gabriel then moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he cuts hair today. As a bright and caring young man, Gabriel tries hard to not only be a barber, but also make a connection with the neighborhood. He says, "The thing that I like the most about my job is that people feel comfortable and stylish with my cuts and that makes me feel happy."

In order to tell you what I believe, I must bring up something from my personal history.

The turning point of my life was my decision to give up my business job and study music. My parents, although sharing my love of music, didn't think it was a good choice that I took up music as a job. Considering my family background, this was understandable. My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years at Spring Hill College in Mobile, and though he was much loved by his students, he didn't earn(挣钱)enough to provide for his large family. As a result of this example in the family, my parents strongly asked me to go to the college instead of a conservatory(音乐学院) of music although I loved my violin and spent most of my spare time practicing.

Before my graduation from Columbia, the family ran into some money problems and I felt it

was my duty to leave college and take a job. That was why I took a business job, which I always think of as the wasted years. I went into it for money, for being able to help the family. Money is all I go out of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by.

My wish was to save enough to quit(退出)and then go to Europe to study music. I continued to make money, and finally, bit by bit, I earned enough to make myself able to go abroad. The family got out of the trouble and ▲ . I felt like a free man and sailed for Europe. I stayed for four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working and enjoyed every minute of it.

"Enjoyed" is too soft a word. I walked on air. I really lived. When I broke away from business, it was against the advice of all my friends and family, but if I had stayed in business, I do not believe I would have made a success of living.

(1)The writer presented his grandpa's example in order to .

A. show how much his grandpa was loved by his students

B. tell to be a musician wasn't a good choice for the writer

C. explain why his parents disagreed him to take up music as a job

D. thank his parents' support for studying in the conservatory of music

(2)How did the writer feel when he was taking his business job?

A. Successful.

B. Shameful.

C. Hopeful.

D. Painful.

(3)Which of the following can best fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?

A. my point was that business was not for me.

B. my help was no longer necessary.

C. I earned so much to support my family.

D. I got up early to practice the violin.

(4)From the underlined sentence "I walked on air", it can be inferred that the writer .

A. couldn't find his place in a new environment

B. couldn't make a success of living

C. felt free because he was doing what he loved

D. felt pity for beginning a new life

【答案】(1)C

(2)D

(3)B

(4)C

My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years at Spring Hill College in Mobile, and though he was much loved by his students, he didn't earn(挣钱) enough to provide for his large family.

That was why I took a business job, which I always think of as the wasted years.

The family got out of the trouble

I felt like a free man and sailed for Europe. I stayed for four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working and enjoyed every minute of it.

Dear Dr. Manners,

My close friend seldom says "please". She will say "Can you get me that bag?" or" Move it over there!" I have told her a lot of times that it is polite to use "please" and "thank you", but she hardly remembers. I feel that she is ordering me around without "please", and I always get angry. We have been close friends for over 10 years. It seems that I can't stand it any more. What should I do? Can you help me?

Sincerely,

Hawkins Dear Ms Hawkins,

When your friend docs not use polite words, it seems that she is ordering you to do something. So you have right(权利) to hate her behavior.

Ask her why she doesn't use "please" or "thank you". Explain to her that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Also, you don't need to do anything for her because she doesn't seem kind or pleasant when she asks you to.

Maybe your friend was not taught how to use "please" or "thank you" in the normal conversation. So you can try to teach her that. Remember it is difficult to find another close friend if you lose one.

Best regards,

Dr. Manners (1)Ms Hawkins doesn't know how to use "please" or "thank you".

(2)Ms Hawkins got to know her friend more than ten years ago.

(3)Dr. Manners thinks Ms Hawkins has right to hate her friend's behavior.

(4)Maybe Ms Hawkins' friend doesn't know the right way of talking in the normal

conversation.

(3)根据第二封信的内容中的“it seems that she ordering you to do something. So you have right(权利) to hate her behavior.”

(4)根据第二封信的内容中的“Your friend was probably never taught how to use ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ in normal conversation.”

Do you often listen to music at loud volumes (音量)? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing. Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss (听力丧失) ,because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB (分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner二Most of us are bon with about 16,000 hair cells (听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells notice sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss. Once this happens, it's hard to get your hearing back.

Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too

loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you alight feel uncomfortable

The "safe level" for most sound is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 dB is about equal to (相当于) the noise of a subway.

Here is some advice on safe listening. Over—the—ear headphones (头戴式耳机) are better than in—ear ones. They do a better job of stopping outside noise, so you can listen at a lower volume. Don't listen to loud music on your headphones for a long time. Follow the 60:60 rule: listen to music at 60 percent of your headphones' maximum volume for no more than 60 minutes a day.

(1)It is safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 100 dB for 15 minutes

(2)Listening to loud noise for a long time can cause some hair cells in the inner ear to die. (3)From the fourth paragraph, we know people don't always realize how loud their music is. (4)In—ear headphones are better than over—the—eat ones because they can stop more outside noise.

(5)This article mainly tells us why ears are an important part of our bodies.

(2)1

(3)1

(4)0

(5)0

It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB (分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes.

However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die.

根据if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it.

根据Over—the—ear headphones (头戴式耳机) are better than in—ear ones. They do a better job of stopping outside noise, so you can listen at a lower volume.

2020届中考英语阅读理解50篇 (绝对精品训练题,接近实战考题,值得下载练习) 1 When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul. Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest. Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw t he rest away. 1. We learned from the second paragraph that the writer and his father were feeling ______. A. relaxed B. worried C. hungry D. proud 2. How did the writer and his father eat the watermelon? A. They ate it in a polite way. B. They only ate its best part. C. They ate every part of it. D. They shared only one piece. 3. In the eyes of the writer’s father, Bernie ______. A. was just a rich businessman B. worked hard all the time C. lived a rich but healthy life D. knew how to make money

B Do you want to live a happier, less stressful life? Try laughing for no reason at all. That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter (笑声)Clubs around the world and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. "Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day," says Dr. Kataria. "Everyone is naturally good at laughing-it's the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives." There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over l,300 in the world. Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%. So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha.” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it worked! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed-and comfortable I felt. So if you're under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results! (1)The first Laughter Club was started in __________. A. India B. America C. Britain D. China (2)How many Laughter Clubs are there in the world today? A. Over 300. B. Over 500. C. Over 800. D. Over l,300. (3)How did the writer feel at the beginning of the class? A. Surprised. B. Pleased C. Nervous. D. Tired. (4)When did the people in the club begin to laugh for real? A. After ten minutes. B. After ten hours. C. After ten seconds. D. After ten days.(5)The article mainly tells us __________.

Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone (里程碑) in space research. On January 3, 2019, Chang'e-4 became the first lunar probe (月球探测器) in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon. The Earth's gravity (重力) slows the moon's rotation (自转), matching it to the speed of its orbit (公转). Therefore, the far side of the moon is almost "dark" and has never been seen. It's this sense of the unknown that makes the far side of the moon such an interesting place for scientific and space research. Being blown by solar (太阳的) winds, the far side may have the special minerals (矿物质). For this reason, Chang'e-4 will study the effect of solar winds on the lunar surface and any mineral found by the spacecraft. Chang'e-4 is also carrying flower seeds, potatoes and silkworm eggs to see whether life is possible on the moon. If it is, then the moon will become a possible choice for space travel in the future. However, research of the "dark" side isn't easy. As the far side is blocked(阻断) off from us, radio noise coming off Earth is also blocked. This is why China's relay satellite (中继卫星) Queqiao was sent up in May, 2018. Thanks to Queqiao, the communication problem between Earth and Chang'e-4 has been well solved. Power supply (电源供应) is also a challenge to the task. Chang'e-4 gets energy from the sun through its solar panels. As we know, a lunar day has the length (长度) of 28 Earth days. After Chang'e-4 was sent up on December 8, 2018, it took the probe over 20 days to orbit the moon to be in a position to be able to land in moon daylight and use its solar panels. Luckily, everything goes well, Chang'e-4 has worked on the "dark" side for over 5 months. It has sent back many photos of the far side of the moon and has been used to carry out some scientific experiments. The New York Times used the word "groundbreaking" to praise the task and wrote that "it will offer help to the history and development of the moon". (1)When was Chang'e-4 sent up? A. In May, 2018. B. On December 8, 2018. C. On January 3, 2019.
