Part II Reading Comprehension(40%)

Passage 1

Many of the world’s most serious environmental problems such as pollution and wasting the earth’s natural resources are not new; they have existed for many years. Today, ecologists (生态学家) are very concerned about two major environmental issues: sustaining a clean water supply, and preserving the rain forests.

Water is a necessary resource that supports all life forms. Neither plants nor animals can survive for very long without it. It is the most widely used resource in industry, and plays a major role in energy production. Quality of life, as well as life itself, depends on a continual supply of clean, fresh water.

The rainforests are another of the world’s most valuable and endangered resources. The Amazon rain forests of Brazil have often been called the “Lungs of the Planet”, because they naturally and continuously recycle carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)into oxygen, which helps keep our atmosphere clean. The Amazon rain forests are home to more than half the world’s estimated ten million species of plants, animals and insects. They also produce raw materials for cancer-fighting drugs and other pharmaceuticals(药品).

Rain forests once covered fourteen percent of the earth’s land surface. Now they only cover six percent, and experts believe that we may destroy these rain forests completely in less than forty years. How can we stop the deforestation? Ecologists say that environmental organizations must work together with different communities and countries, to find solutions to these serious environmental problems. As citizens of the earth, we all have a responsibility to preserve and sustain the environment we have for ourselves, and the future generations of our children, grand children, and great-grandchildren.

36.What’s the new issue about the environmental problems?

A. Serious pollution.

B. Less and less water.

C. Less and less rain forests.

D. Wasting the earth’s natural resources.

37.Without clean, fresh water there would be no ____.

A. industry

B. energy

C. oxygen

D. life

38. What’s the most important role can Amazon rain forests play?

A. They can turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.

B. They can make water clean.

C. Half of the world’s animals have built up their homes there.

D. Half of the world’s plants are growing there.

39. What will happen if we don’t take measures to solve these problems?

A. All the animals will lose their homes.

B. There will be no forests in about forty years.

C. There won’t any raw materials at all in about forty years.

D. Rain forests will cover only six percent of the earth’s land surface.

40. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Clean Water Is Necessary for Life.

B. Rain Forests Should Be Preserved.

C. Sustaining the Environment for All the People.

D. Keeping the Atmosphere Clean.

Passage2

For most Americans, the word “poverty” suggests destitution: an inability to provide

a family with nutritious food, clothing, and reasonable shelter. But only a small number

of the 35 million persons classified as “poor” by the Census Bureau fit that description.

While the poor are generally well-nourished, some poor families do experience hunger, meaning a temporary discomfort due to food shortages. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 13 percent of poor families and 2.6 percent of poor children experience hunger at some point during the year. In most cases, their hunger is short term. Eighty-nine percent of the poor report their families have “enough” food to eat, while only 2 percent say they “often” do not have enough to eat.

The typical American defined as poor by the government has a car, air conditioning, a refrigerator, a stove, a clothes washer and dryer, and a microwave. He has two color televisions, cable or satellite TV reception, a VCR player, and a stereo. He is able to obtain medical care. His home is in good repair, and is not overcrowded. By his own report, his family is not hungry and he had sufficient funds in the past year to meet his family’s essential needs. While this individual’s life is not well-off, it is equally far from the popular images of frightening poverty conveyed by the press.

41. For most Americans, a “poor” man is the person who ____.

D. He provides enough money to satisfy all the needs for the whole family.

45. We can learn from the passage that the poor American life ____.

A. can afford all modern products

B. means no house for the family

C. is different in the eyes of the government and the press

D. only belongs to those who do not have enough food to eat Passage 3

At least 2.3 million people took some kind of online courses in 2004, according to a recent survey by the Sloan Consortium, an education group, and two-thirds of colleges offering “face-to-face” courses also offer online ones. But what were once two distinct types of classes are looking more and more alike---and often dipping into the same pool of students.

At some schools, online courses---originally for nontraditional students living far from campus---have proved surprisingly popular with on-campus students. A recent study by South Dakota’s Board of Regents found 42 percent of the students enrolled in its distance-education courses weren’t so distant: they were located on campus at the university that was hosting the online courses.

Numbers vary depending on the policies of particular colleges, but other schools also have students mixing and matching online and face-to-face credits. Motives range from lifestyle to accommodating a job schedule to getting into high-demand courses.

Washington State had about 325 on-campus undergraduates taking one or more distance courses last year. As many as 9,000 students took both distance and in-person classes at Arizona State last year.

Passage 4

Hyperinflation(极度通货膨胀)is defined as an economic condition during which there is steep increase in price.

In accordance with the laws of economics, three factors combine to create this condition. Firstly, demand must be much greater than the supply of available goods. Secondly, the country must continuously create and thereby build up an ever increasing supply of money. Thirdly, the governmental processes that are used to collect taxes must be destroyed.

Let’s imagine a country where production is barely accomplishing its goal: to keep up with demand. When this happens, the government should decrease the salaries of the workers by raising taxes. But the government is powerless to collect the taxes, so it prints more money to make up for the goods it must purchase. This new money goes to the workers who produced the goods; as a result, the people are not forced to give up certain things for a while. They actually become richer. While this might appear to be a positive step, it is actually worse off. Every month the government is forced to print more and more money so as to increase the amount of goods it can purchase until it is destroyed. The only way to prevent total economic breakup in such a situation is for the government to increase taxes in a manner that is characterized by equality to every one involved.

51.According to the passage, hyperinflation is characterized by ___.

A. the rapid decrease in price

B. the reasonable increase in price

C. the rapid increase in price

D. the short-term increase in price

53. According to the passage, the goal of production is ____.

A. to raise taxes

B. to create the rich

C. to increase salary

D. to satisfy demand

54. When production cannot keep up with demand, the government which is powerless in collection taxes ____.

A. can decrease the production amount

B. has to provide more money

C. has to encourage production amount

D. can increase workers’ salary

55. According to the passage, the way to prevent economic breakup in the time of hyperinflation is to ____.

A. increase the amount of money

B. establish new taxing procedures

C. learn experience from foreign countries

D. tax every citizen of the country

First he claimed that “a small number of high-profile mistakes” were 18 the social network’s “good history” on privac y. The FTC is not relying on Facebook to police itself. Among other things, the company will now have to seek consumers’ approval before it changes the way it shares their data. And it has agreed to an independent privacy audit every two years for the next 20 years. There is a clear pattern here. In separate cases over the past couple of years the FTC has insisted that Twitter and Google accept regular 19 audits, too, after each firm was accused of violating its customers’ privacy. The intent seems to be to create a regulatory regime that is tighter than the status quo, 20 one that still gives social networks plenty of room to innovate. 1.
