Plastic-Eating WormsHumans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that winds up in landfills(垃圾填埋场), and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms.Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater wax moth can break down polyethylene, which accounts for 40% of plastics. The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms’ chewing alone was not responsible for the poly ethylene breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste(糊状物) and applied it to plastic films.14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass — apparently broken down by enzymes (酶) from the worms’ stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology in 2019.Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms’ ability to break down their everyday food — beeswax — also allows them to break down plastic. "Wax is a complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, is there as well, "she explains, "The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this bond. "Jennifer DeBruyn, a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify the causeof the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物)?Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team’s findings might one day help employ the enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process — not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic. "1. What can we learn about the worms in the study?A. They take plastics as their everyday food.B. They are newly evolved creatures.C. They can consume plastics.D. They wind up in landfills.2. According to Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step of the study is to .A. identify other means of the breakdownB. find out the source of the enzymeC. confirm the research findingsD. increase the breakdown speed3. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the chemical might .A. help to raise wormsB. help make plastic bagsC. be used to clean the oceansD. be produced in factories in future4. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To explain a study method on worms.B. To introduce the diet of a special worm.C. To present a way to break down plastics.D. To propose new means to keep eco-balance.【文章大意】本文为说明文。

Life in the future李仕才一、阅读理解。
It’s an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My wife says no because we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and what’s the point if you can’t go on holiday. The joy of a recession (不景气) means no argument next year —we just won’t go.Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov survey of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples.Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money may be different things to men and women. "People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it’s for, " he explains. "They’ll say it’s to save, to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them." He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buyin g status and of showing their parents that they’ve achieved something."The biggest problem is that couples assume each other know what’s going on with their finances, but they don’t. There seems to be more of a taboo (禁忌) about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you’re doing, who’s paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you don’t have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it."1. What does the author say about going on holiday in Paragraph 1?A. It will cost them too much money.B. Few people can afford it without working hard.C. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.D. It is the chief cause of family quarrels.2. According to the text, what does Kim Stephenson believe?A. Money is often a symbol of a person’s status.B. Money means a great deal to both men and women.C. Men and women spend money on different things.D. Men and women view money in different ways.3. The author suggests that couples should________.A. put their money together instead of keeping it separatelyB. discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationshipC. make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgetsD. avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic【文章大意】文章通过度假的问题引入话题,男人和女人对钱的看法是不一样的,夫妻应该就钱的问题多进行讨论,这样可以建立健康的关系。
Unit 3 Life in the futureIt's impossible to know the future. We can guess, but no one has actual knowledge of what's going to happen down the road. But if you're someone who trusts your own feelings, you're more likely to accurately predict future events than people who don't trust their feelings as much. That's the conclusion of a recent study done by researchers at Columbia Business School.Through a series of eight studies they found that subjects who had a high amount of trust in their feelings were generally better able to predict things like the outcomes of presidential elections, football games, the winner of American Idol, and even the weather. How is this possible, you ask?The best explanation is known as the“privileged window”hypothesis. The gist is that when we rely on feelings to make a prediction,we're really summarizing and calling on everything we know about the subject in question. It's similar to what journalist Malcolm Gladwell wrote about in his best-selling book Blink that the more we know about something the greater our ability to make snap judgments and predictions without thinking too much.Unlike Gladwell's theory, though, the recent study is less about snap decisions and more about consciously deciding to rely on feelings to make predictions.Do that, and you're more likely to be able to sense what may happen in the future.【词海拾贝】1.accurately adv.正确无误地,准确地;精确地2.predict vt.预言,预测3.presidential adj.总统的,首长的4.privilege vt.给予……特权5.hypothesis n.假说,假设;猜想,猜测6.gist n.(……之)要点,主旨,梗概,要义7.snap Unit 3 Life in the future李仕才一、阅读理解。
If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.Take the taxi drivers for example.Taxis in Finland are mostly highclass Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to,and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least signs of anxiety. The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners.Hotel guests have their meals free,so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration cards to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge. The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss at the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly. With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty_advantages”.But the strange thing is that all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fares after they have attended to their business and that not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in.As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do,living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.1.The underlined words in Paragraph 5 means to “________”.A.be ready to help othersB.make good use of one's friendsC.be a little ahead of othersD.gain something at other's expense2.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.While taking a taxi in Finland, you can get off without first paying your fare.B.In a big hotel in Finland, you can enjoy free meals if you're living in the hotel.C.The bosses in Finland pay the employees according to the registration of theirworking hours.D.The workers are always honest with their working hours.3.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.the Finnish society is of very high moral(道德的)levelB.there are many loopholes in everyday life in FinlandC.in Finland, most taxi drivers will not charge you anythingD.everyone in Finland is like a gentleman, for they have faith in themselves 4.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A.Life in FinlandB.A Society with “Foolish” PeopleC.What a LifeD.Honest accounts of the Finns【解题导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,主要通过一些例子,介绍了芬兰人的诚实,并且诚实让他们成为真正的“绅士”。

In the morning light, I could see the shadows that were etched(蚀刻)deep within the lines surrounding his eyes. Each morning I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten class. (2018·武昌高三调研)Kanda really doesn’t like to walk alone. The scientist from a research institute of intelligent robots finds the experience so boring that he’d rather drive—even though he lives close to his lab and knows that walking is healthy.“I enjoy walking with someone, like with my wife, with my daughter,” Kanda said.“But they are not always available.”So Kanda, who specializes in humanlike bots, developed a robotic walking partner that could make small talk based on its surroundings, which,he hopes, might motivate people to get out and exercise more. The bot rests on a person’s shoulder like a boxy parrot. It weighs about a pound and a half and sits roughly 8.5 inches high, and is 3.5 inches wide and 10 inches long.A microphone,a speaker, and an internal camera allow it to communicate. It’s even equipped with a smile.Kanda and his team collected video from five different locations, including a garden and a shopping mall, and created a dataset of small talk topics related to each location. Then they programmed the robot to associate visual cues with specific topics.A special speech softwareprovided the robot with a voice.Near a group of parked cars, for example,it might say,“In a big parking lot, sometimes I forget where I parked.”They tested the robot on 15 volunteers,10 males and 5 females, who were paid and averaged about 26 years old.“Have you ever blown a puff of dandelion(蒲公英) seeds into the air?”The robot asked a participant, who smiled and responded,“Yes,I often did that when I was a child.”Although several participants noted the robot’s weight,Kanda was surprised that no one considered the experience strange or funny.“I guess people enjoy new technologies,” he said.Just like a human partner,Kanda’s bot isn’t perfect. It’s not able to go for walks in heavy rain and, while the robot can make expressions,it can’t really hold a conversation, about which Kanda is most worried.Despite its limits,Kanda was comforted by the bot’s presence.“I felt a kind of sense of being with someone,” he said,“particularly when it spoke.”【解题导语】本文主要介绍了新研发的陪人散步的机器人。
