We couldn’t wait to get outside. Sure, we knew that growing up was to be about going to school and doing homework, but for us the most important thing was having fun. As soon as school was over, we’d run home, eat something, and rush outside to take care of our real business, hanging about (闲逛) with our friends.

Hanging about was our time, when we didn’t have to deal with the annoyances (烦事) of the family life. We’d be with our friends traveling the range of our imagin ations, inventing a new game with bottle caps. We were ruled only by ourselves and answered to no one but ourselves.

We played all kinds of games, but most of our activities involved a ball. City kids played “official” ball games like baseball, football, and basketball —but we also had a whole range of less formal ball games to draw upon for fun. These games had simple rules, needed a few people and took almost no time to get going. The games could be the center point of attention, but they usually occurred while the main event, hanging

about, took place.

That’s how it was, just you and your friends. It wasn’t about having your mom allow a play date with another mom; it wasn’t about organized sports. You didn’t need organization, time, planning, or equipme nt. You made creative use of the urban landscape. Fields of play were the sidewalks, streets and walls. Bases were cars, lamp posts and garbage cans. Equipment usually was made of some household things, but there was one thing that was necessary: a rubber ball.

B. make new friends

C. go to school

D. play with friends

B. easily annoyed

C. ruled by some people

B. didn’t have strict rules

C. usually happened at school

D. required a number of players

39. What can be learned from the last paragraph?

A. The kids used to play at home.

B. The games took place almost anywhere.

C. The kids spent a lot of money on the games.

D. The kids didn’t like to play official ball games.

40. The passage was written in a mood.

A. worried

B. serious

C. happy

D. black

How could we live without the Internet? That’s how most of us keep in touch with friends, find homework support, research a cool place to visit, or find out the latest news.

But besides millions of sites to visit and things to do, the Internet offers lots of ways to waste time — and even get into trouble. And just as in the real world, some people you meet online might try to make use of you.

You’ve probably heard stories about people who get into trouble in chat rooms. Because users can easily remain anonymous (匿名的), chat rooms often attract people who are interested in more than just chatting. They’ll sometimes ask visitors for information about themselves, their families, or where they live —information that shouldn’t be given away.

Usually, people who request personal information like home addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses use this information to fill mailboxes and answering machines with advertisements. In some cases, though, they may use this information to do something illegal or to harm a person’s or family’s well-being.

Of course, the Internet is home to millions of places you can and should visit. Like an infinite (极大的) library, the Web can take you to the end of the earth with the information it contains.

You can use it to do research for school, find out what movie is on (and whether people like it), check out

a college you’re thinking about, or find a jo

b or a volunteer opportunity. Almost anything you can think of has a website about it. And it’s not just websites — blogs, videos, and downloadable games wait to connect you with other users and players. The key is to protect yourself while online.

41. If you give away your personal information, you may .

A. make a lot of friends

B. become famous

C. be put into prison

D. get into trouble

42. You are most likely to be cheated when you’re online.

A. chatting

B. shopping

C. playing games

D. writing blogs

43. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A. The chatting room.

B. The Web.

C. The mailbox.

D. The earth.

44. According to the passage we can do all the following on the Internet EXCEPT .

A. learning about the world

B. looking for a job

C. doing physical exercise

D. talking with friends

45. This passage was mainly written for .

A. teenagers

B. parents

C. teachers

D. employees

Fall Creek Falls is a popular state park in Pikeville in Tennessee, the US. It is about one and a half hours’ drive from the city of Chattanooga. Fall Creek Falls State Park covers 20,000 acres of nature, including playgrounds, picnic places, waterfalls, and suspension bridges (吊桥). If that isn’t enough, there is also a golf course, a lake and some shops.

We first visited Fall Creek Falls State Park in the spring of this year. It is such a huge park that we actually got lost! We finally stopped by a shop to pick up some maps and get our bearings (方位). After a lovely picnic by the beautiful lake, we drove over to Fall Creek Falls, and walked to the base of the waterfall. While the trail is only half mile long, it is fairly steep (陡的) and we had to walk through thick forests. The Fall Creek Falls is the highest waterfall in the eastern United States.

In early October, we took a different route to Fall Creek Falls State Park and came in from the town of Spencer. It took us out directly to the Nature Center. This part of the park has a suspension bridge and trails to Cane Creek Falls and Cane Creek Cascades. We spent some time hiking down Cane Creek Cascades, which falls down 45 feet into a swimming hole. No doubt it was popular in the summer. It was fun to see people walking on the suspension bridge over the waterfalls. You could walk 8 miles to Fall Creek Falls, but we preferred to take the scenic drive so we can see the plants.

At Fall Creek Falls, we first admired the wonderful view from the top, and then hiked the short but steep trail. What a pl easant hike and how beautiful! Fall Creek Falls is now our favorite state park, and we’ll be back.

46. What can we learn about the park the writer visited?

A. It is famous for its falls.

B. It has many wild animals.

C. It is not a very large park.

D. It has a golf club.

47. Why did the writer and his partners stop by the shop?

A. They wanted to have a rest there.

B. They wanted to buy something to eat.

C. They bought maps they needed there.

D. They wanted to have a lovely picnic there.

48. Before the writer arrived at Cane Creek Cascades he had passed by .

A. the thick forests

B. the beautiful lake

C. the base of the waterfall

D. the Nature Center

49. What did the writer prefer to do?

A. To take the scenic drive there.

B. To walk to the town of Spencer.

C. To swim in the swimming hole.

D. To walk on the suspension bridge.

50. The author wrote the passage mainly to tell readers .

A. what Fall Creek Falls State Park is like

B. his two pleasant experiences in the park

C. why Fall Creek Falls State Park is famous

D. one of his most pleasant hikes in his life

D

How many calories we eat appears more important than what we eat when we eat too much. That was the finding of a new study that should be satisfying to anyone who counts calories for weight control.

The World Health Organization calls obesity(肥胖) a global epidemic(流行病). Government researchers reported the latest condition for the United States. The good news: obesity rates have not increased much in recent years. The bad news: they have not decreased either. More than one-third of adults were obese.

Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows there are all kinds of conflicting(冲突的) diet plans. Some tell people not to eat carbohydrates Others say not to eat fats. Still others say to eat more protein (蛋白质) or to eat less protein. Dr. George Bray at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana led a new study. He wanted to know if protein in food affects weight gain. Twenty-five healthy adults were in the study. They were overfed (过食) by almost a thousand calories a day over an eight-week period.

The people followed diets with low, normal or high levels of protein. Normal was defined as fifteen percent of energy from protein. Dr. Bray says, “All of them gained weight. Fat storage was exactly the same with all three levels of protein. It was the calories that they ate that affected the body fat that they stored.” The study found that those who ate a higher percentage of protein gained more lean body mass. Body mass represents the relationship between a person’s weight and his height. The opposite happened on a low protein

diet. Dr. Bray tells his patients to weigh themselves regularly so they can know quickly if they gain weight.

Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian at the Harvard School of Public Health studies the relationship between diet and conditions like heart disease and diabetes (糖尿病). He says, “Keeping a healthy weight is not just about ea ting less, but also about what you eat. We don’t need to go down a list of ‘avoid this, avoid that’. It’s actually most foods that should be increased. They are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, vegetable oils and nuts. Increasing these six foods by about one serving each day would reduce obesity and help slow the epidemic of obesity-related diseases.”

51. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A. The tendency of obesity could not be stopped in the US.

B. The problem of obesity still exists in the US.

C. The US is facing the biggest challenge of obesity ever.

D. The World Health Organization has taken steps to fight obesity.

52. Dr. George Bray carried out the study to .

A. find a better way to lose weight

B. know whether overfeeding affects weight gain

C. learn about the relationship between protein and weight gain

D. find out the difference among all kinds of conflicting diet plans

53. Which of the following will Dr. George Bray probably agree with?

A. Diets with low levels of protein are bad for health.

B. Too many calories affect the body fat that people store.

C. Diets with normal levels of protein keep people free from obesity.

D. People who eat a high percentage of protein are less likely to eat high-calories food.

54. It can be inferred from the passage that .

A. having a balanced diet leads to a healthy weight

B. eating less food is the key to losing weight

C. people are supposed to avoid eating foods rich in fat

D. people should eat all of the six foods every day

55. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Having a low protein diet may be good for you

B. Ways to help you keep a healthy weight

C. Want to lose weight? Try counting calories

D. Which is more important—protein or calorie?

Benefits of gardening

Therefore, if you are searching for something that can help you relax, gardening may be just what you are searching for when you need to relax. Give it a try!

57.

Gardening is one of the most excellent means of getting some exercise. Regardless of your age or condition, you may want to consider adding some gardening activities to your life to help keep you healthy.

58.

The feelings you can connect with while gardening are earthy and deep, so that it is hard to explain those feelings. Perhaps, it involves sensations that are not only full of fun, but in some sense you are able to connect with the most fundamental energies of the earth while gardening.

When it comes to thoroughly enjoying a creative experience, there is nothing at all that can get your juices (胃液) going quite the way that gardening can do for you. You can take the time to create your gardening plans or if the mood suits you, you can just plant whatever you want.

60.

Children love to learn and they generally have no limitations of getting dirty. Learning how to garden is a wonderful educational experience you can share with your children. Actually, some children may even surprise you with some of their own abilities to grow things. For them, gardening can be fun and exciting.

Dear Mr. Smith,

I’m now in London, writing to you. London is a beautiful city with a lot of tourist spots, where we find many charming scenes. The weather here is rather mild, neither too hot nor too cold, but it often rains. I didn’t take an umbrella with me when I went out yesterday. As a result, I was wet through. Not until then did I realize why an Englishman always carries an umbrella when he goes out.

Londoners are polite, friendly and helpful. I am warmly welcomed here. What a great time I am having here!

Is there anything special that I can bring to you? See you soon.

Yours,

Li Hua

There are 30 boys in this house and Anne Belles is their mom. Belles has wanted to help children since she was a kid. “I was intrigued by the movie Oliver! in the 1960s, a musical based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. I told my mom, …That?s what I want to do. …” Anne?s boys are from 3 to 25 years old. All of them are challenged in some way. “They each have special needs — physically, mentally (精神上), or at school,” says Belles. Every day, a small army of childcare workers, nurses, and volunteers comes in to help cook and clean, wash 30 loads of laundry a day, and take care of health needs. To find out how much such a large family costs, we followed Jim Silcock to the grocery store. He spent $880 on food for one week. Every month they spend $2,000 to run five cars, $15,000 for the fourteen paid helpers, and more than $10,000 on medical costs. The family receives $26,000 a month from the state government, and makes some money from a family business. All the money is spent on the children; having new clothes and fancy cars isn?t important to Belles. How do the kids feel? 17-year-old Anthony says, “The family is there whenever I need something ... I feel like I am loved.” “Everything I?m doing now is what I wanted to happen in my life,” says Anne Belles. “So, no regrets; this is perfect. I couldn?t ask for it to be better — maybe a bigger house, you know, would be nice.” 21. The underlined word “intrigued” in the first paragraph means “_____”. A. fooled B. attracted C. frightened D. disappointed 22. The boys Anne has raised _____. A. are all ready to accept a challenge B. all like Oliver Twist C. all have disabilities

A.I mustn't B.I can't C.I needn't D.I won't mustn't“不允许、禁止”;can't“客观上不能办到”;needn't“不需要”;won't“不会,不愿意”。 2.It's Dad's birthday and we're going out for a meal to______. A.congratulate B.celebrate C.win D.defend 而congratulate“庆贺”的表达是congratulate sb on sth/doing sth; win“赢得”,其宾语常是a game/match/victory等;defend“保卫/护”。 3.He wrote the poem________his wife who offered her life in defense of the country. A.thanks to B.in place of C.in memory of D.because of in memory of“纪念……”,为固定搭配。thanks to“多亏”;in place of“代替”;because of是一个介词短语,表示“因为”。 4.If anything________to the patient, let me know at once, please. A.happens B.will happen C.takes place D.will take place 答案:A在条件状语从句中,用一般现在时代替一般将来时,故排除B、D两项;happen 表示偶然发生,take place强调发生的事情是有计划或有安排的。 5.It's wrong for us to play tricks________our parents.
