I come from a city on the United States’east coast. It’s a ten-hour flight for me to get home from Shanghai. When I got off the plane, I took photos of the blue sky and white clouds along the way. After two weeks, I returned to Shanghai. Much to my surprise, the blue sky in Shanghai that I liked before was not as blue as that in the US. I couldn’t help wondering what had happened.

A few days later, I went to tour Waitan (a famous tourist attraction in Shanghai) by the Huangpu River with some of my friends. There we saw five Ferrari sports cars by the side of the road. The red and yellow cars looked so nice that everyone was looking at them. However, when I turned my head, I noticed the sky over Waitan, I was shocked to find that the buildings in the Lujiazui area on the other side of Huangpu River could hardly be seen. It was then that I realized tha t Ferrari cars could be bought with money, but a blue sky couldn’t.

Expert: Suzanne Zazulak Pedro —5/26/2009Question (from Lucy):

A long married couple are coming to our town next month for a few days to see all their old friends. I’ve invited them to stay with us. We have a single bed in the basement (地下室), and also a rather uncomfortable double-bed sofa in the living room. My husband says we should offer them our own bed, but I don’t want to. What’s the right thing to do? Answer:

Dear Lucy,

The fact that you made the invitation in the first place already shows your kindness and generosity (大方).

But I think the couple will feel bad if you offer them your own bed. Maybe you could check around your town and see if you can find a hotel at a good price.

When I travel I hate to be forced to do something, but am glad to get good suggestions. If they do decide to stay with you, the "little" things you do will show your good manners. They don’t have to be expensive —maybe fresh flowers from your garden, a cool glass of orange juice, or just some friendly talk when they arrive.

I’m sure you’ll think of a good way to handle it.

If you need further tips, let me know, and I wish you a wonderful time with your friends.

Yours truly,

Suzanne

60. Who is Lucy?

A. The woman who asked the question.

B. An expert on manners.

C. The woman who would visit the town.

A. Good manners are more important than being honest.

B. Doing what you like is good manners.

C. You can show your good manners in many ways.

63. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Good Manners and Bad Manners

B. Which Bed Should I Offer?

C. A Couple and an Expert

D. How to Show My Good Manners?

In the history of photography, the first use of camera was for photographing people and their families. But because of its cost and difficulty, photographers have to get things right at the first time and put as many people as possible into the picture. Here I have my four DOs for family photos.

Do make your groups closer. Even though they are family, most likely, they won’t be getting close enough. It has always been a problem for me to have everyone close. But it can truly give a feeling of family. As a starter, try having people stand with shoulders partly covering the one besides him or her.

Do make people’s clothes match. Remind the family to possibly share similar colors. No extreme colors and strange prints on their clothing. Though it’s their picture and their choice, a casual suggestion from a professional is usually appreciated.

Do check the screen for blinking (眨眼). You can get away with a weak smile, but if someone looks sleepy in their family photo, the customer may not be happy. I suggest you quickly check acr oss everyone’s eyes on the screen after photographing.

Do try to be funny to get natural smiles. Funny jokes work surprisingly well to break the nervousness. A good photographer’s joke might be asking everyone to hold their best pose (姿势). You can als o get them doing something they don’t normally do. Have them try jumping, running or whatever comes to mind.

64. What can we know from the first paragraph?

A. Photography has a very long history.

B. Camera was first used for putting people in newspapers.

C. Taking family photos is expensive and not so easy.

D. People would like to take pictures in groups.

65. Photographers make the family stand closer in order to ______.

A. make people feel it’s more like a family photo

B. make the family relationship better

C. give more space of the picture to the background

D. hold as many people as possible

66. Which of the following is the best clothing choice for a family photo?

A. A pink T-shirt with big stripes (条纹) on it.

B. An extremely green skirt with a golden belt.

C. A grey dress with a small decoration on the collar.

D. A black T-shirt with a big picture of trees on it.

67. How can photographers get their customers’natural smiles?

A. By telling some stories of other families.

B. By showing them the best pose.

C. By telling them interesting jokes.

D. By jumping and running in front of them.

London’s Chinese community (社区) dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors (水手) moved to the city to work in Lime house, east London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Lime house began to be known as "Chinatown". At the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain. However, this situation changed greatly after the Second World War. At this time, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs, and decided to move to London.

In the 1950s, a small Chinese restaurant opened in central London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful. Suddenly, Chinese restaurants started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants (移民) now found that they had too much. Most of the new immigrants enjoyed their life and the chances they were offered. Many asked their friends and relatives to join them from their hometowns, and a lot of families were reunited again at this time.

As time went by, London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the first restaurant workers, encouraged by their parents, studied very hard at school and university. And most got highly-paid jobs. As a result, increasing numbers of Chinese

families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive places. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever, and a must-see for every visitor to London.

68. From the passage, we can learn that the first members of "China town" were _____.

A. restaurant workers

B. early Chinese sailors

C. Hong Kong farmers

D. visitors to London

69. What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?

A. Lime house was influenced by World War II.

B. The number of Chinese people in Britain increased after the war.

C. Many Hong Kong farmers lost their jobs because of the war.

D. The new immigrants found it hard to find jobs during the war.

70. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Before the 20th century, "China town" in London was still very small.

B. In the 1950s, Chinese food became quite popular in Britain.

C. Most of the new immigrants could find a job in the 1950s.

D. With the help of the British government, Chinatown was very successful.

71. According to the passage, now most of the Chinese living in London _________.

A. are clever

B. work long hours

C. have highly-paid jobs

D. live an unhappy life

书面表达(One possible version)

September 27, 2009, Sunday Sunny

This morning, my classmates and I rode to the park. To our disappointment, we found that the park was very dirty, so I suggested we do something to make the park cleaner and nicer. We picked up all the rubbish, including paper, cigarette ends and plastic bags and helped the gardeners put up a number of boards to remind visitors to take care of the flowers and trees. We also told visitors about the danger of "white pollution" and the importance of protecting the environment.

Though we were very tired, we were all happy. The workers in the park and the visitors praised us. I think it is very important to protect the environment.
