THREE CENTURIES OF HQAXES(骗局;恶作剧)!

A THINKING MACHINE

In 1769, long before computers were invented, a man from Hungary(匈牙利)built a wonderful machine that could play chess very well. It delighted(使高兴)people all over Europe and beat nearly everyone it played, including famous figures like French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, and scientist and inventor Benjamin Franklin. For decades, many people believed that it was truly a thinking machine. There were people who said it was a hoax, but could not prove it or explain how it worked. About 85 years later, the secret was finally revealed. There was a man hiding inside the machine all the time……who was obviously very good at playing chess!

ZOO ESCAPE(逃脱)

On November 9, 1874, New York newspaper, The Herald, ran a shocking story on its front page. It said that all the animals in the Central Park Zoo had escaped and were running around the city. It said the police were working to save people, but 27 people had already been killed, and 200 people hurt. It warned everyone to stay at home to avoid the danger. Many people in New York were terrified, and did as the paper said. If only they had read the final words of the article, which said: “Not one word of it is true. Not a single act described has taken place,” It was all just a hoax. The story was made up by Thomas Connery, an editor at The Herald, who wanted to draw attention to the poor condition of cages in the zoo.

ROSIE THE RUNNER

The first woman to cross the finish line of the 1980 Boston Marathon(马拉松)was 23-year-old Rosie Ruiz. However, as she climbed the stairs to receive her prize, people started to become suspicious(怀疑的). She didn’t seem to be tired at all. Furthermore, none of the other runners remembered seeing her, and her picture never appeared in photos or TV broadcasts of the race. Later, several people said that they had seen her join the race only at the end. It turned out she had run only half a mile (about 805 meters) and taken the train for the rest of the race! Her prize was taken away, of course.

B. 200 people were killed by zoo animals in 1874.

根据原文第一段中的“a man from Hungary built a wonderful machine that could play chess very well”可知,有个匈牙利人对外吹嘘自己发明了一个下象棋高手的“机器”,这让欧洲各地的人们非常高兴。

故选A。

Have you ever been in a conflict(冲突)? Do you know how to solve it? Conflict resolution is a peaceful way of trying to solve a conflict. Both sides in the conflict explain what they think happened to cause it. The person who listens to both sides is called the mediator(调解人).

After both sides tell what they think happened to cause the conflict, they discuss ways to solve it. They try to come up with a “resolution” that both sides agree to. They cannot be angry during the communication. Everyone should use good listening and attending skills while talking. If voices get too loud or it appears that someone is angry, the mediator will speak up and have them treat each other with respect. After different suggestions are shared in how to mediate the conflict, it is time for

discussing the best solution(解决办法).

Here is an example of how conflict resolution works step by step in a school playground setting:

●Someone says a student pushed him on the football field.

●The person who was accused as the “pusher” says it was actually an accident.

●The person who was pushed gets the mediator.

●The mediator takes the two persons to a quieter place, away from others to talk.

●The mediator calms them down and lets them know he understands

their feelings.

●Each person describes what happened.

●The mediator repeats what he heard, so it is clear to everyone.

●The mediator asks for ideas to solve the problem.

●The two persons offer their own solutions.

●The two persons have a discussion and come to an agreement.

●The mediator makes sure the persons follow the solution.

●The mediator offers praise for solving the problem.

Conflict resolution can be used in many environments. It encourages people to tell what really happened, to share their feelings, and to work together peacefully to solve the problem. It offers people workable steps to reach an agreement with the help of a mediator.

38. According to the passage, if two students have had a fight, they had better_______.

A. call the police

B. get a mediator

C. ask parents for ideas

D. describe the fight to teachers

39. In conflict res olution, the mediator’s job is to_________.

A. describe what really happened to both sides

B. help both sides reach an agreement in a proper way

C. listen to both sides and then punish the trouble maker

D. write down what both sides have explained in the communication

40. The underlined words “was accused” in this passage might mean “______” in Chinese.

A. 被惩罚

B. 被轻视

C. 被指责

D. 被否定

41. The writer gives the example in the passage in order to_______.

A. show how a mediator works in a football match

B. help us know the importance of a mediator in daily life

C. show how conflict resolution is used in different environments

D. help us clearly understand the workable steps in conflict resolution

Conflict resolution is a peaceful way of

trying to solve a conflict. Both sides in the conflict explain what they think happened to cause it. The person who listens to both sides is called the mediator. 故选B。

It offers people workable steps to reach an agreement with the help of a mediator.

根据后文as the “pusher”可得知the person 是推人的一方,所以是被指责的一方。故选C。

Here is an example of how conflict resolution works step by step in a school playground setting.

Sir, I think I will tell you what happened last night. My husband Mr. Smith went to bed at about half past ten. The servants had already gone to their rooms. Only my housekeeper stayed in her room at the top of the house until I needed her.

I read a book in this room until after eleven. Then I walked round to make sure that all was

right before I went upstairs(楼上). I went into the kitchen, the storeroom, the living room, and finally the dining-room. As I came near the window, which is covered with thick curtains(窗帘), I suddenly felt the wind blow on my face, and realized that it was open. I pulled the curtain to one side, and found myself face to face with a man who had just walked into the room. By the light of my bedroom candle, I saw two other men entering behind the first. I was so scared, walking back quickly, but the man was on me in a minute. He caught me first by the wrist(手腕) and then by the throat. I tried to shout, but he hit me heavily over the eyes, and I fell to the ground. I must have been unconscious for a few minutes. When I woke up, I found they had tied me to the chair, and a scarf round my mouth stopped me from making any sound. At this time, my unlucky husband came into the room. He had certainly heard some suspicious(令人怀疑的) sounds, and he came prepared. When he rushed at one of the bad men, another man took the poker(拔火棍) out of the fireplace quietly and hit him heavily as he passed. My husband fell without a sound and never moved again.

51. When did the bad men go into the house?

A. Before Mr. Smith went to bed.

B. While Mrs. Smith was reading a book.

C. Before the servants went to their rooms.

D. When Mrs. Smith was checking the rooms.

52. Where did the event take place?

A. In the kitchen.

B. In the dining-room.

C. In the living room.

D. In the storeroom.

53. What does the underlined word “unconscious” mean?

A.昏迷的

B. 疼痛的

C. 窘迫的

D. 发狂的

54. What did the bad men NOT do after they went into the house?

A. They caught Mrs. Smith by the hair.

B. They hit Mrs. Smith heavily.

C. They tied Mrs. Smith.

D. They killed Mr. Smith.

55. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Mrs. Smith was too scared to cry for help.

B. The bad men went into the room through the door.

C. Mr. Smith guessed something unusual was happening.

D. Mr. Smith knew how many bad men were in the house.

As I came near the window……found myself face to face with a man who had just walked into the room.

I went into the kitchen, the storeroom, the living room, and finally the dining-room.

When I woke up, I found they had tied me to the chair, and

a scarf round my mouth stopped me from making any sound. 故选A。

He caught me first by the wrist(手腕) and then by the throat. I tried to shout, but he hit me heavily over the eyes可知B项提到了;根据第二段句子When I woke up, I found they had tied me to the chair可知C项提到了;根据第二段最后句子My husband fell without a sound and never moved again. 故选A。

When

I woke up, I found they had tied me to the chair, and a scarf round my mouth stopped me from

making any sound. I pulled the curtain to one side, and found myself face to face with a man who had just walked into the room. He had certainly heard some suspicious(令人怀疑的) sounds, and he came prepared. When he rushed at one of the bad men, another man took the poker(拔火棍) out of the fireplace quietly and hit him heavily as he passed.

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟). Don't argue (争辩) with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can't express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter. Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong. Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life. A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try! (1)According to the passage who have a communication problem? A. parents and other people B. only school kids and their parents C. teachers and their students D. parents and children of all ages (2)How many pieces of advice does the writer give us to bridge the generation gap?
