Researchers have established that when people are mentally engaged, biochemical changes occur in the brain that allow it to act more effectively in cognitive(认知的)areas such as attention and memory. This is true regardless of age.

People will be alert and receptive(接受能力强的)if they are 31 with information that gets them to think about things they are interested in. And someone with a 32 of doing more rather than less will go into old age more cognitively 33 than someone who has not had an active mind.

Many experts are so 34 of the benefits of challenging the brain that they are putting the theory to work in their own lives. “The idea is not 35 to learn to memorize enormous amounts of information,” says James Fozard, associate director of the National Institute on Aging. “Most of us don’t need that kind of 36 . Such specific training is of less interest than being able to 37 mental alertness.” Fozard and others say they challenge their brains with different mental skills, both because they enjoy them and because they are sure that their range of activities will help the way their brains 38 .

Gene Cohen, acting director of the same institute, suggests that people in their old age should engage in mental and physical activities 39 as well as in groups, Cohen says that we are frequently advised to keep physically active as we age, but older people need to keep mentally active as well. Those who do are more likely to maintain their intellectual abilities and to be generally happier and better 40 . “The point is, you need to do both.” Cohen says. “Intellectual activity actually influences both brain-cell’s health and size.”

To the Editor:

Re “Students Get New Reading Assignment: Pick Books You Like” (“The Future of Reading” series, front page, Aug. 30):

One reason it is critical that children select books at their reading level is that doing so builds stamina. A student reading at the third-grade level who is in a sixth-grade classroom will not make headway as a reader by slogging(艰难前行) painfully through To Kill a Mockingbird.

“Simpler” books are the foundation upon which students build a lifelong habit of reading and further the actual skill of reading for longer and stronger periods of time.

There is a lesson for parents, too. We tend to judge the simpler books as being less important as our children become more independent. But these books still play a very important role in building stamina, as does rereading.

The more we can help our children build stamina with books at their reading levels, the more likely they are to embrace To Kill a Mockingbird at a point when it is possible for them to understand it and find deep meaning in it.

An article published recently in the scientific journal Nature is shedding new light on an important, but so far little has been appreciated, aspect of human evolution. In this article, Professors Dennis Bramble, and Daniel Lieberman suggest that the ability to run was a decisive factor in the development of

our species. According to the two scientists, humans possess a number of anatomical(人体结构的)features that make them surprisingly good runners. “We are very confident that strong selection for running, which came at the expense of the historical ability to live in trees-was helpful in the origin of the modern human body form,” says Bramble, a biology professor at the University of Utah.

Traditional thinking up to now has been that the upright body form of modern humans has come about as a result of the ability to walk, and that running is simply a by-product of walking. Furthermore, humans have usually been regarded as poor runners compared to such animals as dogs, horses or antelopes. However, this is only true if we consider fast running over short distances. Even Olympic athlete can hardly run as fast as a horse can gallop, and can only keep up a top speed for fifteen seconds or so. Horses and antelopes, on the other hand, can run at top speed for several minutes, clearly outperforming us in this respect. But when it comes to long-distance running, humans do astonishingly well. They can maintain a steady pace for miles, and their overall speed compares favorably with that of horses or dogs.

Bramble and Lieberman examined twenty-six anatomical features found in humans. One of the most interesting of these is the nuchal ligament(颈背的韧带). When we run, it is this ligament that prevents our head from pitching back and forth or from side to side. Therefore, we are able to run with steady heads held high. The nuchal ligament is not found in any other surviving primates(灵长类动物), although the fossil(化石)record shows that Homo erectus, an early human species that walked upright, much as we do, also had one. Then there are our Achilles tendons(跟腱)at the backs of our legs, which have nothing to do with walking. When we run, these tendons behave like springs, helping to push us forward. Furthermore, we have low, wide shoulders, virtually disconnected from our skulls (the bony part of the head), another anatomical adaptation which allows us to run more efficiently.

But what evolutionary advantage is gained from being good long-distance runners? One assumption is that this ability may have permitted early humans to obtain food more effectively. “What these features and fossil facts appear to be telling us is that running evolved in order for our direct ancestors to compete with other carnivores (animals that eat meat) for access to the protein needed to grow the big brains that we enjoy today.” says Lieberman.

64.We can learn from the passage that the human ability to run _______.

A. was only recently described in a scientific journal

B. played an important part in human evolution

C. was considered more natural than the ability to live in trees

D. contributed to the form of human language

65.According to the second paragraph, humans _______

A. are better runners than most other animals

B. are not good at running short distances

C. compare unfavorably with horses and dogs

D. are poor long-distance runners

66.It appears that the nuchal ligament _______.

A. enables us to run with steady heads

B. is found in modern primates only

C. prevents the head from being held high

D. is a unique feature of carnivores

67.The passage does NOT tell us that _______

A. early humans had an advantage in obtaining food thanks to the running ability

B. fossils help us better understand human evolution.

C. our Achilles tendons are an adaptation for running efficiently

D. big brains may have been evolved for running long-distance

Section C (8%)

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

I have just been treated like a second-class citizen, simply because I happened to be that put-upon member of society –a customer. The more I go into shops and hotels, banks and post offices, railway stations, airport and like, the more I’m convinced that things are being run solely to suit the firm, the system, or the union. There seems to be a dishonest new motto for so-called “service organizations” --- Staff Before Service.

How often, for example, have you queued for what seems hours at the Post Office or the supermarket because there weren’t enough staff on duty to man checkout counters? Surely in these days of high unemployment it must be possible to hire cashiers and counter staff? Yet supermarkets say that putting all the cashiers at any one time would increase overheads. And the Post Office says we cannot expect all the service counters be occupied “ at times when demand is low.”

It’s the same with hotels. Because waiters and kitchen staff must finish when it suits them, dining rooms close earlier or menu choice is shortened. As for us guests (and how the meaning of that word has been weakened), we just have to put up with it. There’s also the nonsense of s o many friendly hotel night porters having been withdrawn gradually in the interests of “efficiency”(i.e profits) and replaced by coin-gulping machines which supply everything from beer to medicine. Not to mention the creeping threat of the tea-making kit in your room: kettle with teabags, plastic milk cartons and lump sugar. Who wants to wake up to a raw teabag? I don’t, especially when I am paying for “service”.

Can it be stopped, the declining service quality, this growing attitude that the customer is always unpleasant to deal with? I hope so, because it’s happening, sadly, in all walks of life. Our only hope is to hammer home our anger whenever and wherever we can, and if all else fails, resurrect (复兴) that older slogan --- Customer Is God

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
