Webster’s New World Dictionary的解释是:“a figure of speech containing an implied comparison, in which a word or phrase or dinarily and primarily used of one thing is applied to another”这个解释的意思是说,隐喻是一种隐含着比喻的修辞格,他通常的基本用法是,表述某一事物的词或短语被用来表述另外的一种事物。
A Dictionary of Literary Terms对Metaphor的定义就是如此,“Metaphor: A figure of speech in which one thing is described in terms of another. The basic figure in poetry. A comparison is usually implicit; whereas in simile it is explicit.” 1a. Life is like an isthmus between two eternities.
Metaphor lives a secret life all around us.
We utter about six metaphors a minute.
Metaphorical thinking is essentialto how weunderstand ourselves and others,暗喻思想是一把钥匙,它能够开启我们互相理解how we communicate, learn, discover and invent .
But metaphor is a way of thought before it is a way with words.
Now, to assist me in explaining this, I've enlisted the help of one of our greatest philosophers,为了说明这一点,我讨教了一位今世最伟大的哲学家,the reigning king of the metaphorians, a man whose contributions to the fieldare so great thathe himself has become a metaphor.
I am, of course, referring to none other than Elvis Presley.
Now, "All Shook Up" is a great love song.
Metaphora way of describing something by referring to it as something different and suggesting that it has similar qualities to that thingSimilean expression that describes something by comparing it with something else, using the words 'as' or 'like', for example 'as white as snow'Metaphor(隐喻):用一个词来指代与该词本来所指事物有相似特点的另一种事物的方法。
如果把例句:“My girlfriend is like a sweet watermelon.”,去掉了like 这个描述词,这便是隐喻用法而不是明喻了。
(1) A nest is to a bird what a house is to a man. (Art and Architecture, SEFC 2A, P.21)
本句话的语言结构:“A is to B whatC is to D”为隐喻结构,意为“A 对B 而言正如C 对D 一样。
”(2) There were a few lordly poplars before the house.
My heart is like a singing bird。
As white as snow.I wandered lonely as a cloud.as cool as a cucumber 极为冷静的(像黄瓜一样冷静)as easy as a pie 极容易(像馅饼一样容易)as fussy as a hen with one chick 在小事上瞎操心as hard as the nether millstone 铁石心肠(像下层的磨石坚硬)as hungry as a hunter 非常饥饿(像猎人一样饥饿)as lively as a cricket 极活泼(像蟋蟀一样活泼)as mad as a wet hen 非常生气(像弄湿的母鸡一样生气)as mild as a dove 非常温和(像鸽子一样温和)as plain as the nose in your face 一清二楚(像你脸上的鼻子一样清楚)as poor as a church mouse 赤贫的(像教堂的老鼠一样穷)as proud as a peacock 极骄傲(骄傲得像只孔雀)as strong as a horse 健壮如牛as stupid as an owl 极愚蠢(像猫头鹰一样愚蠢)as thin as a wafer 极薄(像糯米纸一样薄)as true as steel 绝对可靠(像钢一样可靠)Metaphor 隐喻是和明喻不同,不用like或as表示出来,而是进行隐藏的比较的这样一种修辞手段。
Metaphor lives a secret life all around us.
We utter about six metaphors a minute.
Metaphorical thinking is essential to how weunderstand ourselves and others,暗喻思维是一把钥匙,它可以开启我们相互理解how we communicate, learn, discover and invent.
But metaphor is a way of thought before it is a way with words.
Now, to assist me in explaining this, I've enlisted the help of one of our great est philosophers,为了说明这一点,我请教了一位当代最伟大的哲学家,the reigning king of the metaphorians, a man whose contributions to the field are so great thathe himself has become a metaphor.
I am, of course, referring to none other than Elvis Presley.
Now, "All Shook Up" is a great love song.
It's also a great example of how whenever we deal with anything abstract也是一个极好的暗喻范例,它诠释了当我们面临抽象事物时,ideas, emotions, feelings, concepts, thoughts -- we inevitably resort to met aphor.
In "All Shook Up," a touch is not a touch, but a chill.
Lips are not lips, but volcanoes. She is not she, but a buttercup.
And love is not love, but being all shook up.
In this, Elvis is following Aristotle's classic definition of metaphor在这里,埃尔维斯采用的完全是亚里士多德对暗喻的经典定义,as the process of giving the thing a name that belongs to something else.
This is the mathematics of metaphor. And fortunately it's very simple. X equ als Y.
This formula works wherever metaphor is present.
Elvis uses it, but so does Shakespeare in this famous line from "Romeo and Juliet:" Juliet is the sun.
Now, here, Shakespeare gives the thing, Juliet, a name that belongs to something else, the sun.
But whenever we give a thing a name that belongs to something else, we give it a whole network of analogies too.
We mix and match what we know about the metaphor's source, in this case the sun, with what we know about its target, Juliet. And metaphor gives us a much more vivid understanding of Juliet than if Shakespeare had literally described what she looks like.
So, how do we make and understand metaphors? This might look familiar.
The first step is pattern recognition. Look at this image. What do you see?
Three wayward Pac-Men, and three pointy brackets are actually present.
What we see, however, are two overlapping triangles.
Metaphor is not just the detection of patterns; it is the creation of patterns.
Second step, conceptual synesthesia.
Now, synesthesia is the experience of a stimulus in once sense organ in another sense organ as well, such as colored hearing.
People with colored hearing actually see colors when they hear the sounds of words or letters.
We all have synesthetic abilities. This is the Bouba/Kiki test.
这是Bouba/Kiki测试。
What you have to do is identify which of these shapes is called Bouba, and which is called Kiki.
If you are like 98% of other people, you will identify the round, amoeboid shape as Bouba, and the sharp, spiky one as Kiki.
Why do we do that? Because we instinctively find, or create, a pattern between the round shape and the round sound of Bouba, and the spiky shape and the spiky sound of Kiki. And many of the metaphors we use every day are synesthetic. Silence is sweet. Neckties are loud. Sexually attractive people are hot. Sexually unattractive people leave us cold. Metaphor creates a kind of conceptual synesthesia, in which we understand one concept in the context of another.Third step is cognitive dissonance. This is the Stroop test. What you need to do here is identify as quickly as possible the color of the ink in which these words are printed. You can take the test now. If you're like most people, you will experience a moment of cognitive dissonance when the name of the color is printed in a differently colored ink. The test shows that we cannot ignore the literal meaning of words even when the literal meaning gives the wrong answer.
