Unit 2 Cloning李仕才一、阅读理解AEnjoying a musical performance no longer requires a costly ticket or a trip to a theater. These days, musicians are performing in private homes, at haircutting shops, at airports... even on ferry boats.Musicians like house concerts. At music clubs, they often have to perform over loud conversation or deal with people who have had too much alcohol. People at house concerts are more focused on listening to the music.Just a few hours before the Bombadils started singing at the O' Hair Salon, Lindsay was cutting hair and Tamera was doing facials. Then, they moved chairs and microphones to create a small performance space. The Bombadils made music in the front part of the hair salon, near the hairdryers and makeup tables.“T his is our first show at a hair salon,” Sarah Frank of the Bombadils told concertgoers at last week's performance. Frank said she and band members, Luke Fraser and Kaitlyn Raitz had a great time “interacting” with the audience.Concerts in people's homes, or small businesses such as O' Hair's, are becoming more popular, musicians say. “There is a more relaxed atmosphere,” said Domenic Cicala, a musician who opened up his O' Hair Salon to concerts. “People really get to know the artists.”At house concerts, people get time before and after concerts to meet the performers. Often, the hosts or guests will provide food and drink.“People really like listening to music in the living room of a friend,” said Matt Hart, with Aubrey Zoli making up the Local Stran gers, a folkrock group based in Seattle. At many such concerts, the musicians do not need microphones. Yet, every word of their songs can be heard.【文章大意】本文主要介绍了现代音乐会在举办场地的选择上更加多样化。

If you're making determination for a healthier new year, consider a gut makeover(肠道清理).Changing your microbe community(微生物群),however, may not be easy, and nobody knows how long it might take. That's because the ecosystem already established in your gut determines how it absorbs and processes nutrients. So if the microbe community in your gut has been shaped by a daily diet of hamburgers and pizza, for example,it won't respond as quickly to a healthy diet as a gut shaped by vegetables and fruits that has a more varied microbe community.“The nutritional value of food is influenced in part by the microbe community that encounters that food,” said Dr Jeffrey Gordon, the senior author of the new paper and director of the Center for Genome Science and Systems Biology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis.“Nutritional components of a healthy diet have to be viewed from the inside out,” he said,“not just the outside in.”One of the questions the study set out to answer was how individuals with different diets respond when they try to improve their eating habits. The scientists harvested gut bacteria from humans, transplanted them into mice bred under germfree conditions, and then fed the mice either Americanstyle or plantba sed diets. The scientists then analyzed changes in the mice's microbe communities.Of interest, the scientists harvested the gut bacteria from people who followed sharply different diets. One group ate a fairly typical American diet, consuming about 3 000 calories a day, high in animal proteins with few fruits and vegetables. Some of their favorite foods were processed cheese and lunch meat. The other group consisted of people who werecalorierestricted. They ate less than 1 800 calories a day and had carefully tr acked what they ate for at least two years, sticking to a mostly plantbased diet and consuming far less animal protein than the other group,a third fewer carbohydrates(碳水化合物)and only half the fat. This calorierestricted group, the researchers found, had a far richer and more diverse microbe community in the gut than those eating a typical American diet. They also carried several kinds of“good” bacteria, known to promote health, that are unique to their plantbased diet.“Perhaps the best way to shape a healthier microbe community is to eat more fiber by consuming more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts or seeds,” said Meghan Jardine,a dietitian who was not involved in the current study but has published articles on promoting healthy microbe communities. She urges people to aim for 40 to 50 grams of fiber daily, well above levels recommended by most dietary guidelines.1.What can we know from the first two paragraphs?A.Changing microbiome is fairly easy.B.Ecosystem in gut is shaped by carbohydrates.C.Nutritional components are determined by food intake.D.As to healthy diets, microbe community shaped by vegetables and fruit respond more quickly than that shaped by junk food.2.What can we learn about Meghan Jardine?A.She suggests eating as little as possible.B.She attaches great importance to fiber.C.She is one of the researchers of the current study.D.She advocates consuming more meat in daily life.3.What's the author's attitude toward gut makeover?A.Concerned. B.Opposed.C.Indifferent. D.Nervous.4.Which is the best title for the text?A.Microbe community in our gutB.A gut makeover for the new yearC.Dietary guidelines for daily dietsD.The best way towards a healthier microbe community【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new recipes on the Internet or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new language. We use the Internet to connect with family and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. The list goes on and on.As far as the Internet being a part of our lives—well, that train has left the station. That expression means there is no going back. If you prefer boating, you can say that ship has sailed. So, there may be no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers.Study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online were more likely to have high blood pressure.High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra strain increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke.High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney disease. It is also closely linked to some forms of dementia, a brain disease. Dementia is marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and a reduced ability to reason.Let’s introduce something about the study of it.The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. It involved 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old. One hundred thirty-four of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. Researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use and high blood pressure. Other research has connected that heavy Internet use with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity. The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. In a statement shes aid, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life but it shouldn’t consume us. ”For the purpose of the study, she explains, teens considered heavy Internet users were online on “average 25 hours a week. ”Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take “regular breaks from their computers or smartphones” and to do some “kind of physical activity. ”She also suggests that parents limit their children’s use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.【文章大意】互联网如此有用并且融入我们的生活, 但过度使用它, 会导致多种健康问题。

Kanda really doesn’t like to walk alone. The scientist from a research institute of intelligent robots finds the experience so boring that he’d rather drive—even though he lives close to his lab and knows that walking is healthy.“I enjoy walking with someone, like with my wife, with my daughter,” Kanda said.“But they are not always available.”So Kanda, who specializes in humanlike bots, developed a robotic walking partner that could make small talk based on its surroundings, which,he hopes, might motivate people to get out and exercise more. The bot rests on a person’s shoulder like a boxy parrot. It weighs about a pound and a half and sits roughly 8.5 inches high, and is 3.5 inches wide and 10 inches long.A microphone,a speaker, and an internal camera allow it to communicate. It’s even equipped with a smile.Kanda and his team collected video from five different locations, including a garden and a shopping mall, and created a dataset of small talk topics related to each location. Then they programmed the robot to associate visual cues with specific topics.A special speech software provided the robot with a voice.Near a group of parked cars, for example,it might say,“In a big parking lot, sometimes I forget where I parke d.”They tested the robot on 15 volunteers,10 males and 5 females, who were paid and averaged about 26 years old.“Have you ever blown a puff of dandelion(蒲公英) seeds into the air?”The robot asked a particip ant,who smiled and responded,“Yes,I often did that w hen I was a child.” Although several participants noted the robot’s weight,Kanda was surprised that no one considered the experience strange or funny.“I guess people enjoy new technologies,” he said.Just like a human partner,Kanda’s bot isn’t perfect. It’s not able to go for walks in heavy rain and, while the robot can make expressions,it can’t really holda conversation, about which Kanda is most worried.Despite its limits,Kanda was comforted by the bot’s presence.“I felt a kind of sense of being with someone,”he said,“particularly when it spoke.”【解题导语】本文主要介绍了新研发的陪人散步的机器人。

Dunne and his “Tube chat” campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the UK, as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances.Although Dunne says he's received mostly positive feedback, not everyone agrees with his idea. Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges with the words “Don't even think about it” on them. Michael Robinson, 24, a student from London, agrees. “Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesn't need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you,” he says.“People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I don't, but it's been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,” Dunne says.So if you ever end up using public transport in the West, why not say hello to the person next to you? Just make sure to check for a badge first.【文章大意】每年乘坐伦敦地铁的乘客众多,可是人们仍然感到孤独;为此Jonathan Dunne发起了一个旨在鼓励乘客相互交谈的运动,此举引起了世界媒体的关注。

The bees, spotting the food beneath the screen, learned to pull the "flowers" out by pulling the string with their legs and feet to be able to get to it.From another group of bees given the chance to solve the task without any training, only two of 110 were successful.Another group of bees was then allowed to observe the trained bees pulling the strings, and 60 percent of them successfully learned the skill. Finally, trained bees were put in colonies, and the scientists found the technique spread successfully to a majority of the colony’s worker bees.Lars Chittka, a Queen Mary University professor who guided the project, said the team is interested in figuring out the brain processes behind the bees’ learning and teaching skills.1.What does the underlined word "exclusive" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Unit 2 Cloning李仕才***阅读理解。
Spider(蜘蛛) webs have something in common with guitar strings. The long, thin strings on a guitar can vibrate(振动). They move back and forth, or from side to side. So do webs made by spiders. The lines of silk they produce can carry vibrations. This movement gives the small creature information about what landed on the web.Spiders have eight legs and usually eight eyes. The animals build webs with their own soft, naturallymade silk. And much like playing the strings of a guitar, a spider can send out vibrations across its web over many different frequencies(频率). Spiders catch their food, usually insects in their webs. They make small movements, which spread across their webs. The vibrations can give the spider details about what is caught in the web—maybe a possible mate,or something tasty to eat.Vibrations are not just used to spot what is for dinner. They are also important in courtship(求爱), so lots of males will actually create a very specific kind of musical pattern which the females c an use to determine not only that they’re a male, but they’re the right species, and whether they might want to mate with them as well.Spiders make their own vibrations to find out the condition of the webs. By controlling the tightness of the material, they can effectively control how information is getting to them when they hang out in the middle of the web.Spiders have a special ability to shape the physical nature of their selfmade materials and creations. Scientists think that spider silk may have changed over time for this purpose.【解题导语】本文介绍了蜘蛛吐出的蛛丝可以传播不同频率的振动,这些振动让它们知道蜘蛛网上落下了什么东西并且这些振动在求爱中也非常重要。
1.How does a spider feel that an insect is caught in the web?A.Through its sense of sight.B.Through vibrations of its web.C.Through different frequencies.D.Through a musical pattern.B 解析:细节理解题。
