Q: ( 1) Where did the story take place?

A: The story took place in a clinic.

Q: What was the relationship between the two people?

A: They are doctor and patient.

Q: What is the story about?

A: It is about a woman who went to see the doctor, but did not want to tell her age.

Q: (2) Why did the woman go to see the doctor?

A: Because she had some trouble with her heart.

Q: Did the doctor know her? Why not?

A: No. Because he is a new doctor.

Q: What did he ask her first?

A: He first asked her some questions, and one of them was, “How old are you?”

Q: (3 ) Did the woman tell the doctor her age immediately? Why not?

A: No, she didn’t because she said she didn’t remember.

Q: How old was her husband?

A: He was sixty years old.

Q: Then how did she work out that she was only thirty six?

A: She thought that when she married, she was eighteen years old and her husband was thirty. Now her husband was sixty, that was twice thirty, so she was twice eighteen then, and she worked out that she was thirty six.

Q: (4 ) How old was the woman?

A: She was forty eight years old.

Q: Did she really forget her age?

A: No, I don’t think so.

Q: Why didn’t she tell the doctor her age in a direct way?

A: I think in the western society, age is a woman’s privacy, so the woman didn’t tell he r age in a direct way.

I am a new doctor in a clinic. One day a middle-aged women came and told me she had some trouble with her heart. Because I knew nothing about her, I had to ask her some questions first, one of my question was “How old are you?” When I asked this question, she said that she didn’t remember, but she would try to think. She thought for a minute and then said she remembered it, but she didn’t tell me her age in a direct way. She said that when she married, she was eighteen years old, and her husband was thirty, Now her husband was sixty, and that was twice thirty. So she worked out that she was twice eighteen. That was thirty-six.

In this picture, we can see a big desk with a man sitting behind it and a woman sitting in front of it. There are some things on the desk, one of them is an instrument for measuring the blood pressure, and there is a bottle of ink near it. A sheet of paper and a pen-holder are in front of the man on the desk There are two medical records on it, too, I think.

The woman is sitting on a chair with a handbag on her lap, and her hands are resting on the handbag. She is dressed in a dark-colored coat and a short skirt with a fur hat on her head. She is looking up, so she seems to be thinking hard. Her facial expression is funny. The man sitting in an armchair behind the desk is a doctor. He is holding a pen in his right hand, his

chin is resting on his left hand. He is wearing a suit with a stethoscope around his neck. He looks amused as if they are talking about something interesting.

"And you want to buy it," said her husband. "How much does it cost? "

"Forty pounds. "

"Forty pounds for a cotton dress? That is too much!"

But every evening, when Mr Jones came back from work, his wife continued to speak only abou't the dress, and at last, after a week, he said, "Oh, buy the dress! Here is the money!" She was very happy.

But the next evening, when Mr Jones came home and asked, "Have you got the famous dress?" she said, "No. "

"Why not?" he said.

"Well, it was still in the window of the shop after a week, so I thought, nobody else wants this dress, so I don't want it either. "

Test 2 On Keeping a Diary in English Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing ability. It can help us to cultivate the habit of thinking in English. If we persist in this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we inevitably run up against a lot of difficulties. In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble finding appropriate words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there are many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English properly. Certainly, there are some other roadblocks we may come across in our keeping a diary in English. As far as I’m concerned, my suggestion is that we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is of great use to keep a diary in English for the development of our writing skills. Test 3 Keeping Pets With the rise of people’s living standard, keeping pets is becoming a fashionable activity in China. More and more pet markets are set up across the nation, in which various kinds of pets are available. Over the past few years, even the prices of pets have been on the rise. Some people would spend several thousand yuan on a smart dog or a rare bird. If you are strolling along the streets in the evening, you’ll see a lot of people walking dogs. People keep pets for different reasons. For most families, pets are lovely, sensitive creatures with whom they are able to communicate. They keep them just for fun and pleasure. As for some adults, playing with their pets is their favorite form of relaxation after a day’s work. As for children, it seems that there are no better friends or companions they can find than a funny-looking dog or a clever cat. However, for some people, keeping pets is only a display of their wealth. By owning an expensive dog or bird, they intend to show off how wealthy they are. I, myself, don’t see anything wrong with keeping pets. I think the love that exists between us human and animals can be even more strongly felt while we are feeding a pet. It is this harmonious relationship between human and animals that contributes to the balance of nature. Test 4
