EVERY YEAR, millions of Americans see their personal information leak into the wrong hands. Maybe there’s spyware on their computer, or a service they use suffered a security reach --- as eBay did this year, leaving customers at risk of exposure. Or perhaps their password is easy to guess: Security company SplashData reports that the most popular passwords in 2013 were 123456 and password.

Fear not: It is a lot easier than you might think to set up proper defenses. In fact, you can easily do it all in a weekend. Here’s how.

Clean Your Computer And Smartphone

Before you put new security measures into place, make sure your devices are as spotless as possible. This means installing a good antivirus program and taking the time to clear out any spy- or malware that may have already infected your system. Go with A VG Free Antivirus (free. Avg. com) or Avast! (avast. com) ---each is free. Run a full system scan. This can take over an hour, so start it before settlin g into other plans. When you return to your computer, clear out anything that shouldn’t be there with a few simple steps (the program will guide you). These days, it’s also worth it to make sure your phone is safe from viruses. iPhones are less likely to be targeted by spyware, but Android users should download the Lookout app (lookout. com) to scan their devices and ensure everything is as it should be.

Security Your Wi-Fi

Now that your computer is clean, you should plug any holes in your home network. It’s fairly easy for potential criminals to gain access to your information if they’re able to share your connection --- that’s why you want to be careful when using public Wi-Fi. For your home, the Federal Communications Commission recommends a few steps. Even though you put security measures into place a couple of years ago, it’s a good idea to refresh your settings. You may have to refer to the instructions for your wireless router or call tech support for help. Different routers will have different setup pages, so the actual step-by-step will vary, but the end result will be the same.

Dig Deep with Your Passwords

Everything you just accomplished could be for nothing if a thief has your existing passwords, so you need to change them for every service you use. Try it when you find yourself on those sites anyway.

What you’ve heard is true: Passwords should use a variety of special characters, numerals, letters, and cases when possible. They should be close to random, and there should be a different one for each website you use. Doing this, and keeping track of it all, is a pain --- which is why people don’t do it and wind up with stolen identities. Try Dashlane (https://www.doczj.com/doc/567013726.html,), a password manager with powerful encryption (加密) that can securely keep track of the most ridiculous codes you can come up with. Best of al l, it logs you into sites automatically, so there’s no need to worry about all those obscure keystrokes. Whew!

Never Answer Unwanted Email

Take are when shopping online. Always check the security symbols when using an online site for shopping. If the lock icon encryption is not there, do not give out credit details. Also, check that the site is legal --- never go to a site from a random email and start shopping online. Go to the site through a known URL or by searching for it on a search engine first.

Keep a separate credit card just for online shopping. This will make it easier to cancel if

something bad does happen and your other credit card for “in real life” can still be used uninfluenced.

Don’t store information on any store’s website. It may be conventional but it’s also a possible loss to you if the site is hacked.

59. The passage is mainly about _____________.

A. ways of avoiding online identity theft

B. tips of freeing computers from viruses

C. measures to ensure network security

D. steps to keep track of passwords

60. According to the passage, the risk of exposing personal information may possibly be caused by ___________.

A. the applications of antivirus programs

B. the practice of using public Wi-Fi

C. the difficult access to the passwords

D. the separate credit card for online shopping

61. To put new security measures into place, we need to ____________.

A. clear out of everything in the system

B. make a random selection of network

C. get rid of potential spyware

D. refresh the infected system

62. Which of the following is the improper way to shop online?

A. Adopting a unique password for every website.

B. Shopping online at reliable websites.

C. Keeping credit details safe by checking security symbols.

D. Monitoring credit card by storing information.

Seeds on Ice Close to the North Pole, remote and

rocky Plateau Mountain in the Norwegian archipelago of

Svalbard seems an unlikely spot for any global effort to

safeguard agriculture. In this cold and deserted environment,

no grains,no gardens,no trees can grow.Yet at the end of

a 130-meter-long tunnel cut out of solid stone is a room filled

with humanity's most precious treasure, the largest and most

diverse seed collection ---more than a half-billion seeds.

A quiet rescue mission is under way. With growing

evidence that unchecked climate change will seriously affect food production and threaten the diversity of crops around the world, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault represents a major step towards ensuring the preservation of hundreds of thousands of crop varieties. This is a seed collection, but more importantly,it is a collection of the traits found within the seeds:the genes that give one variety resistance to a particular pest and another variety tolerance for hot,dry weather.Few people will ever see or come into contact with the contents of this vault. In sealed boxes, behind multiple locked doors, monitored by electronic security systems, enveloped in below-zero temperatures, and surrounded by tons of rock, hundreds of millions of seeds are protected in their mountain fortress.Frozen in such conditions inside the mountain, seeds of most major crops will remain viable for hundreds of years,or longer.Seeds of some are capable of retaining their ability to grow for thousands of years.

Everyone can look back now and say that the Seed Vault was a good and obvious idea, and that of course the Norwegian government should have approved and funded it.But back in 2004,when the Seed Vault was proposed,it was viewed as a crazy, impractical, and expensive idea.

We knew that nothing would provide a definite guarantee. But we were tired, fed up,and frankly scared of the steady, greater losses of crop diversity. The Seed Vault was built by optimists who wanted to do something to preserve options so that humanity and its crops might be better prepared for change. If it simply resupplied seed gene banks with samples those gene banks had lost, this would repay our efforts.

The Seed Vault is about hope and commitment-about what can be done if countries come together and work cooperatively to accomplish something significant,long-lasting,and worthy of who we are and wish to be.

63.According to the passage, the Seed Vault is___.

A.a tunnel where the collected seeds are displayed

B.a stone room that contains the seeds of endangered crops

C.a seed gene bank that stores diverse seeds for future agriculture

D.a lab where researchers study how to maintain the diversity of crops

64.The underlined word "viable" in Paragraph 3 probably means___.

A.mature B.clean C.alive D.valuable

65.Paragraph 3 mainly tells us___.

A.how the seeds are preserved B.where people keep the seeds

C.why the seeds are protected D.what people do to study the seeds

66.We can know from the passage that___.

A.the Seed Vault offers a solution to climate change

B.most countries took part in rescuing the seed varieties

C.the Seed Vault guarantees to prevent the loss of crop diversity

D.many people originally considered building the Seed Vault unwise

Young Americans Are Less Wealthy Than Their Parents

The cost of living in the United States is going up, notes writer Alissa Quartz. As is reported in New York Post, Quartz points to "the costs of housing, education and health care in particular." At the same time, a new study, the report of which is called "The Fading American Dream" found that half of Americans born in the 1980s are falling behind their parents economically.

These findings show that many younger adults are experiencing "downward mobility." In other words, they are not doing as well economically as their parents were at the same age. The idea of downward mobility is especially troubling for Americans, writes Robert Samuelson in The Washington Post. He says most U.S. citizens believe that, over time, the amount of money they earn will rise and life will get easier.

Alissa Quartz wrote a book about the financial difficulties of Americans. In the book, Quartz tells about teachers who are struggling to pay for regular costs. One high school teacher drives for ride sharing service Uber at night to earn more money. He corrects students' papers between riders. A college professor turned to government assistance to feed her child and pay for a doctor. Quartz says even lawyers increasingly cannot earn an income that enables them to meet their needs. The problem of decreasing incomes in their field is made worse by debt they may have from law school.

Quartz and the economists who studied these issues say many things have led to lower incomes and downward mobility. The economic recession of 2007 to 2009 is partly to blame, they say. Modern

technology also plays a part. Quartz says robots threaten to reduce the earnings of health care workers, reporters, and people who work at supermarkets, drug stores and tax preparation services. In The Washington Post, Robert Samuelson noted that poor schools, a weak housing industry and too many government rules are also to blame.

With all these things, and more, partly responsible, what is the solution? These experts say the answer is complex. But all point to one issue that needs to be examined: economic inequality. Quartz writes that while America is one of the richest countries in the world, it also has one of the biggest divides between the wealthy and the poor.

The researchers in "The Fading American Dream" study make a similar observation. They say raising GDP will not significantly improve the economic situation of most Americans. A higher GDP may help only those who are already doing well. Instead, the economists say, the United States could try to repeat something Americans born in the 1940s experienced. As those children grew up, they almost all benefited from a better economy.

67.The author mentions two reports in Paragraph 1 in order to _____.

A. explain the results of two researches

B. introduce his opinions about the issue

C. attract readers' attention to health care

D. lead to the topic of downward mobility

68.What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A. The causes of downward mobility.

B. The influences of government rules.

C. The negative effects of modern technology.

D. The results of economic recession in America.

69.The author indicates in this passage that _____.

A. raising GDP will greatly help the poor

B. American economy has a bright future

C. young Americans will repeat their parents' experience

D. it's vital to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor

70.We can learn from the passage that in America, _____.

A. people miss the good old days in the 1940s

B. people are suffering from a worse economy

C. people are pessimistic about future economy

D. people complain a lot about economic changes

How Female Farmers Are Feeding the World

The exact data on women in agricultu re is difficult to pin down. There are variations between countries and agriculture data is challenging to collect. What is clear, however, is that most small-scale farmers are women, making up 60-80 percent of farmers in developing countries. The FAO (Food and

Agriculture Organization of the UN) estimates that between 43 percent to even 70 percent of agricultural labor in some countries comes from women.

But women still don’t have the same rights as men when it comes to farming, making food production harder for women because of gender inequality. For female farmers, it is unquestionably a challenging job to engage in food production.

In the first place, purchasing land, farming equipment and hiring labor can be expensive. These costs are even harder on women because many of them lack access to credit. In nearly 48 economies women face legal restrictions to having control of their own finances.

Getting to the bank is hard too. Mobility for women in rural parts of developing countries is a big concern. Better transportation and infrastructure could help make access to credit more practicable for women. Credit and finance should be equal for everyone, especially women who are held back by gender restrictions.

Sadly, women may run the world, but they do not own it. Women are virtually denied property rights. Traditional customs in place can pass down land through the male side of the family, leaving women out of land rights completely. Other times, women need permission from a male relative or husband to own land.

It has been apparent that women are not as productive farmers as men and work longer hours in some countries like Indonesia. This is largely due to a lack of education. When education is considered more valuable for men (and thus mainly given to men), women farmers are less informed about the best production methods, thus producing less yield in crops and becoming “less productive”. This can all be changed through providing education for women. Removing gender inequality can help feed 130 million people who are currently undernourished.

Despite these barriers, women are definitely not leaving the “field”. In countries experiencing urban growth, men are migrating to urban areas for other jobs while women stay in rural areas, taking on jobs in farming and agriculture. Healthier children, education, and investment into the community are all benefits that female farmers are shown to have on their communities.

Let’s close the gender gap and give women the tools they need to succeed. If women farmers in developing countries have the same rights and opportunities, they will be just as productive. With increasing population, and the need for better food security, supporting women in agriculture is

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行)along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.

Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that’s a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it was not a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.

Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase.

Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before hi m. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolfs teeth would be tearing into his flesh.

At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They did not think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.
