Lesson 1 A Puma at large

1.Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America.

语言点2 cat-like是"n.+adj."

的,man-like男人般的,crystal-like水晶般的,baby-like婴儿般的,dog-like像狗一样

的,steel-like钢铁般的,home-like像家一样的,angel-like天使般的,dream-like梦境般的。

Koalas are small,bear-like animals which live in Australia.

2.When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotte

d forty-fiv

e miles south o

f London, they were not taken seriously.

I finally spottedjust the book I wantedin the bookstore.

事,takesb./sth.lightly小看某人/某事,be unsympathetic to sth.

show low regard to/for sth.对某事不在意,be indifferent to sth.

语言点2 写作短语模板:feel obliged to do sth.

it is necessary for sb to do sth.某人有必要做某事,be forced to do sth.

事,feel/be impelled to do sth.感到有必要做某事(内因),be compelled to do sth.

As the proof began to gather, the police felt obliged to interrogate this suspect fu rther, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the suspect were remarkably similar.

语言点4 claim to have seen,声称看到过,to have seen是动词不定式的现在完成时结构,做claim的宾语。

4.The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her.

3 the hunt for sb./sth. hunt for a job找工作,Missing Wanted 寻人/寻物启事,People Search/Wanted/Missing寻人,Wanted通缉。

5.It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that

a pumawill not attack a human being unless it is cornered.

2)与corner搭配的介词at the corner of the street在街道的拐角

in the corner of the room在房间的角落里on the corner of the desk在桌子的一角语言点3 1)unless和if...not均表示否定的条件,一般可互换:

Unless you have more pratice, youwill fail in the dtiving test.=If you do not have more pratice, you will fail in the dtiving test.

The teacher told him that he would never pass the examination unless hestudied h ard.

6.The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one pl ace in themorning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening.

特别注意的是:地点状语at one place 和at anotherplace,时间状语in the morning 和in the evening形成对照。

Itmust have rained, for the river is so high.He must be at home, for the light in his roo m ison.

地点副词和时间副词做后置定语:the houseahead前面的房子,the conclusion below下面的讨论,the plan last year去年的计划。

7.Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animal s likerabbits.

He must go where we send him.=He must go to the place where we send him.

He must go wherever we send him.=He must go to any place where we send him .

语言点3 it left behind it a trail of dead deer...

a trail of dead deer and small animalslike rabbits与behind it形成倒装。 When they got home,

Jane cookedtheir dinner in the microwave oven and without relising it,cooked her fian ce's wallet as well.

8.Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clingi ng tobushes.

I found a tagboard clinging to my luggage.

Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging tobus hes.

比:People saw paw prints in a number of places and found puma fur linging to bushes .

A note was passed up to the speaker.

Some one passed up a note to the speaker.(主动语态,强调“人”,不突出“纸条”。)

(1) an increasing number of:

An increasing number of students have realised the importanceof English application,

(2) a growing number of:

Now,a growing number of Chinese students go abroad for study.

9. Several people complained of "cat-like noises"at night and a businessman on afishing trip saw the puma up a tree.

Up a tree作puma 的宾语补足语。

(1) There is a man in the tree.

(2) There are many apples on the tree.

10. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but w here hadit come from?

We believe that he will succeed.

We are convinced that he will succeed.

11. As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one musthave been in the possession of a private collector and somehow ma naged to escape.

现在分词短语missing from anyzoo in the country作主语puma的补足语。

the missing puma,and连接两个并列的动作。

12. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught.

语言点2:在表示“持续”时,keep,go on,last continue有区别:

(1) keep doing sth

Tom always kept asking questions.

My Heart wii Go On.《我心永恒》(电影《泰坦尼克号》主题曲)

Most people believe that the strike wii last for at least a week.

The battle continued for several hours until darkness came on.

13. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in th

e quietcountryside.

(1) It is disturbing to think that…

It is disturbing to think that I will take final examination tomorrow.

(2) It is irritating to think that…

It is irritating to think that my brother lost his bicycle this tomorrow.

(3)It is exciting to think that…

It is exciting to think that I will get the chance.

Lesson 12 Life on a desert island 【Text】 §Lesson 12 Life on a desert island What was exceptional about the two men's stay on the desert island Most of us have formed an unrealistic picture of life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine a desert island to be a sort of paradise where the sun always shines. Life there is simple and good. Ripe fruit falls from the trees and you never have to work. The other side of the picture is quite the opposite. Life on a desert island is wretched. You either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a boat which never comes. Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these pictures, but few of us have had the opportunity to find out. Two men who recently spent five days on a coral island wished they had stayed there longer. They were taking a badly damaged boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami to have it repaired. During the journey, their boat began to sink. They quickly loaded a small rubber dinghy with food, matches, and tins of beer and rowed for a few miles across the Caribbean until they arrived at a tiny coral island. There were hardly any trees on the island and there was no water, but this did not prove to be a problem. The men collected rain-water in the rubber dinghy. As they had brought a spear gun with them, they had plenty to eat. They caught lobster and fish every day, and, as one of them put it 'ate like kings'. When a passing tanker rescued them five days later, both men were genuinely sorry that they had to leave. 【New words and expressions】生词和短语 ◆desert island 荒岛 ◆unrealistic adj. ◆. ◆opportunity n.

较为正式的说法是:I beg your pardon? 或Pardon me?

Lesson 3 Sorry, sir. 1My coat and my umbrella, please. 2No, it isn’t.

Lesson 1 A puma at large Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar. The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside. Language points Pay attention: The points below are not covered by the mp3. They were talking loudly. I got very angry. I could not hear the actors. I turned round. I looked at the man and the woman angrily. They did not pay any attention. In the end, I could not bear it. I turned round again. "I can't hear a word!" I said angrily. "It's none of your business," the young man said rudely. "This is a private conversation!"

Lesson 1 A puma at large Listen to the tape then answer the question below. Where must the puma have come from? Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw‘a large cat’only five yards away from her. Several people complained of‘cat-like noises’at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree.
