I climbed Kilimanjaro with Lava Expectations (探险队) during the rainy season.

I flew to Nairobi in Kenya and spent several days there. At my hotel in Nairobi I met the rest of the group with whom I would spend the next week. We all travelled on the bus together for a 6-hour journey into T anzania and then Arusha, a quiet town.

After we arrived at our hotel in Arusha, we had dinner and a few drinks. Then we were introduced to more members including Taddeus Minja, the guide, who was very experienced---climbing Kilimanjaro runs through the generations(代) of his family.

The next day the Lava Expeditions members checked if we had the correct and enough clothing for our expedition on Kilimanjaro. Only one person needed to bring more clothes. After that we set off, walking in the rain through the beauty of the rainforest, all the way to the first camp. I was happy the next few days as the view was so wonderful and changed every

day. I suffered a little during the trip and I felt so tired. But the members of Lava Expeditions provided me with lots of encouragement, which was one of the best memories. Finally we reached the top of Kilimanjaro in bright blue skies.

I felt excited about climbing Kilimanjaro and the feeling didn’t change during my trip. Lava Expeditions looked after me so well that I was deeply thankful for their help.

Amy Johnson was born on July 1, 1903, in Hull Yorkshire. She was a very brave person. She

played football better than most boys in her school, but many of her teachers didn’t think she was a good girl because she acted liked a boy. She studied at a university and later took a job as a typist(打字员). Although she was active and did her best, she made many mistakes and was paid poorly. She didn’t want to be a typist anyway--- she dreamed of becoming a pilot!

Amy moved to London, borrowed some money, and learned to fly. Nobody, however, wanted to hire(雇佣) a woman pilot. She decided to fly to Australia to prove that a woman could fly as well as a man. Her parents lent her some money to buy an airplane. Amy set off only by herself from Croydon on May 5, 1930. She landed in India six days later. She broke her record to India ,two days less than her previous(原来的) record. At last she landed in Darwin, a city in Australia on May 24, a flight of 11,000 miles.

In July 1931, she set an England to Japan record with Jack Humphreys. In July 1932, she set a record from England to Cape town by herself.

With her husband, Jim Mollison, she also flew from Pendine Sands, South Wales, to the United States in 1933. After World WarⅡbroke out in 1939, Army became an airwoman in the army. On January 5, 1941, Amy’s plane c rashed(坠毁) into a river and she died.

Did you know that the color of uniforms(制服)can influence the performance of an athlete(运动员)? It may sound strange, but a study suggests this might be true.

Two British scientists studied the results of four sports in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where the athletes had been given either a red or a blue uniform. They discovered that when there was a big difference in the score, color had no influence on the result. But if it was a close match, the athlete in red uniform was more likely to win. Then they looked at the uniforms of the soccer teams at the Euro 2004 tournament(锦标赛). Again, teams wearing red won more games.

The two scientists got their idea from earlier studies of wild animals. It had been discovered that when a male(雄性)shows red on its body, it sends a signal(信号)of its power and strength. For example, in many kinds of monkey, the more the male shows off its red scars(伤疤), the more females it can attract.

Based on this fact, the British scientists thought that the idea might work for humans, too. According to them, when an athlete sees a competitor in a red uniform, he gets a feeling that his competitor could be stronger than him. And that kind of feeling may have a bad influence on the player’s performance in the actual game.

Although the idea is interesting, most people don’t accept that color signals in the animal world can really be useful to humans in sports. They think that it is unreasonable(不合理的) to develop an idea based on such a small number of examples. Much more research has to be done to prove the influence of uniform colors on the performance of athletes.
