Book II Lesson 25 Do the English speak English? I arrived in London at last. The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well. The porter, however, could not understand me; I repeated my question several times and at last he understood. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. 'I am a foreigner,' I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that! The porter and I looked at each other and smiled. Then he said something and I understood it. 'You'll soon learn English!' he said.I wonder. In England, each man speaks a different language. The English understand each other, but I don't understand them ! Do they speak English ? Book II Lesson 26 The best art critics ?I am an art student and I paint a lot of pictures. Many people pretend that they understand modern art. They always tell you what a picture is 'about'. Of course, many pictures arc not 'about' anything. They are just pretty patterns. We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else. They notice more. My sister is only seven, but she always tells me whether my pictures are good or not. She came into my room yesterday.' What are you doing ?' she asked.' I'm hanging this picture on the wall,' I answered. 'It's a new one. Do you like it ?' She looked at it critically for a moment.' It's all right,' she said, 'but isn't it upside-down ?' I looked at it again. She was right! It was! Book II Lesson 27 A wet night Late in the afternoon, the boys put up their tent in the middle of a field. As soon as this was done, they cooked a meal over an open fire.

A The word if is contained in four sentences. C 1 would not have been injured 2 had been 3 will find 4 had given 5 is forbidden 2. 1 into 2 out of 3 in 4 over 5 after 3. So it is not certain that the men will be saved a.

6. a 本句需要选一个与前一句的动词词组cause the roof to... c. do it to 和d. do it 都与cause the roof to 含义不符合,意思讲不通。b. make it to(使它)含义与cause the roof to 相同,但不符合语法,因为动词make 后面要求用不带to 的动词不定式,只有a. make it 符合题目意思也合乎语法,所以选a. a. except(除了,除…… If not 不合乎语法,应该是If not for 才对,d. unless(除非,如果不)后面只能跟从句,不合乎语法。 a. explode (爆炸,爆发);b. fall down (倒下,倒塌);c. fall over (从…… Make it possible for sb. to do sth. 其他3个选择都不能用于这个结构. a. able 常用于be able to do sth. 本领的”,是指人有能力 d. probable(可能发生的,很可能的)不适合这种结构。

However, rescue operations are proving difficult. If explosives are used, vibrations will cause the roof of the mine to collapse. Rescue workers are therefore drilling a hole on the north side of the mine. They intend to bring the men up in a special capsule. If there had not been a hard layer of rock beneath the soil, they would have completed the job in a few hours. As it is, they have been drilling for sixteen hours and they still have a long way to go. Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with their closest relatives. Though they are running out of food and drink, the men are cheerful and confident that they will get out soon. They have been told that rescue operations are progressing smoothly. The woman first bought a few small articles 能够看出,只有c. buy a few things 与课文的实际情况相符。 b. pay the assistant for the dresses 和 d. put the dresses in her bag 都与课文的实际情况不符。 2. c 根据课文第10-11行…the detective found out that the shop assistant was her daughter 能够判断出只有c. She was related to one of the assistants(…… People are not so honest as they once were(人们不再像以前那样诚实了)的含义相同。 a. as many as usual(和平时一样多) 与前面的比较级意思不一致;c. as few as usual(像平时一样少)也不符合题目意思;d. more than usual(比平时多)正好和前面的比较级意思相反。

Lesson 93 A noble gift Where was the Statue of Liberty made? One of the most famous monuments in the world, the Statue of Liberty, was presented to the United States of America in the nineteenth century by the people of France. The great statue, which was designed by the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, took ten years to complete. The actual figure was made of copper supported by a metal framework which had been especially constructed by Eiffel. Before it could be transported to the United States, a site had to be found for it and a pedestal had to be built. The site chosen was an island at the entrance of New York Harbour. By 1884, a statue which was 151 feet tall had been erected in Paris. The following year, it was taken to pieces and sent to America. By the end of October 1886, the statue had been put together again and it was officially presented to the American people by Bartholdi. Ever since then, the great monument has been a symbol of liberty for the millions of people who have passed through New York Harbour to make their homes in America. 【New words and expressions】(13) ★ noble(1)adj. 高尚的,高贵的 ←→ ignoble ?[ig?n?ub?l] a. 贵族的、高贵的 a man of noble birth 出身高贵的人; a noble family 名门望族

才合乎语法. a. passing, b. to pass, c. in passing 都不能用在let 后面,只有d. pass 是不带to 的动词不定式,所以应该选d. Up till that time 和 d. ; c. So far(到当前为止)只能用于现在完成时. a. turn, b. to turn 都不合乎语法;d. it was turning 是过去实行时,一般不适合于以before 或者after 引导的状语从句中;只有c. it turned 是一般过去时,最合乎语法,所以应该选c. 敏感的), d. sensible about(对…… 是unaware of 的反义词,所以选a. 9. c
