The Statue of Liberty was back in business on Sunday after a 12-day closure. Tourists, ___25___ feared they might miss the New York icon, were thrilled. They flocked to Battery Park to catch the ferry to Liberty Island.

The Statue of Liberty is ___26___ of about 400 national monuments and parks that closed on October 1st. That is when disputes over the federal budget stimulated a partial shutdown of federal agencies, including the National Park Service.

New York State said ___27___shutdown of the statue was costing New York City millions of dollars in lost tourism revenue. So, it agreed to pay the National Park Service $370,000 to open the statue to visitors from Sunday to Thursday. Three other states have made similar deals with the federal government. Arizona officials decided to spend $93,000 a day to let visitors back into the Grand Canyon. Governor Jan Brewer said the site is worth ___28___. ―This brings an enormous amount of money to the economy, to the state of Arizona, and to our tax coffers. So it was the right thing to do. And when we run out of seven days, we’ll have to re-assess, but we ___29___ (commit).‖

About two-thirds of the funds to re-open the Canyon were donated by the nearby town of Tusayan. Mayor Greg Bryan said the closure hurt local business. ―We estimate that well over a million dollars in the first week alone was lost in revenues coming into the community and into the Park Service with regard to their gate fees, ___30___ ___30___ ___30___ the tax from the concessionaires (特许权获得者) up here. I might suspicious if I had not been accustomed to such responses, for long ago I became convinced that the seeing see little.

How was it possible, I asked myself, ___35___ (walk) for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delight of a flower; and something of the miracle of nature is revealed to me. ___36___(occasion), if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small tree and feel the happy tremble of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have cool waters of a river ___37___ (rush) through my open fingers.

To me the feast of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my finger tips. At times my heart cries out with ___38___ (long) to see all these things. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity ___40___ in the world of light the gift of sight is used only as mere convenience rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.

Space Adventures is taking reservations for the flights, ____41____ to the first manned spaceflights. The trip will cost $ 90,000, with a $ 6,000 deposit required. More than 200 people have made reservations, said Sarah, Dalton, the company spokeswoman.

John Spencer of the Space Tourism Society says that a more realistic ____42____ for regular space travel is 50 years. Issues of expense, difficulty, and danger must still be____43_____. He says he expects a fleet of private space vehicles or ―space yachts (快艇)‖ to be in ____45____ in 20 to 25 years. They will do what he calls ―orbital super yachting.‖ After that, there will be cruise lines, like those that travel the Earth's oceans, as well as space hotels and resorts.

There have been only a few studies to determine the public's interest in space tourism, but they all conclude that a ____46____ of people would like to visit space and would be willing to pay good money for it.

According to expert Patrick Collins, between 5 million and 20 million people will head for space by 2030. He also ____47____ 100 flights a day leaving Earth. It would be ____48____ to have more than 100 hotels in Earth's orbit, a few more orbiting the moon, and a few on the moon's surface. These hotels would ____49____ more than 100,000 people, who would work month-long shifts. Each hotel would have a service station. Such service stations would provide oxygen, water, and hydrogen. (A)

A few years ago, a pilot had to have perfect eyesight and a college degree if he or she wanted to land a job with an American airline. But today, airlines have given up those requirements because they can’t find enough qualified pilots.

Airlines must hire up to 62,000 new pilots in the next decade. But qualified pilots are few and far between in the United States. Every year there are more planes being flown. At the same time, 12 to 15 foreign countries are recruiting American pilots.

As a result, pilots are earning spectacular salaries. The going rate for skilled pilots is well over $90,000 a year. Some pilots can earn about $160,000 plus free housing working for foreign airlines.

Because of the shortage, some people say unqualified pilots are being allowed to fly planes. They fear the number of crashes will skyrocket. Each year, more and more pilots with less than 2,000 hours of experience are being hired. Airlines are also bringing on board many more pilots

who are older than 50, although law requires pilots to retire at age 60.

Being an airline pilot is a difficult job that requires people to make life and death decisions under pressure. Some pilots crack under the pressure.

The military is also having a hard time keeping pilots. Air Force pilots must commit to spending at least six years in the Air Force. The Air Force invests millions of dollars to train each pilot, so it doesn’t want to lose them.

Experts say this problem is going to get a lot worse. Congress may establish a commission to study the country’s pilot needs. In the meantime, salaries of pilots will continue to rise and the number of crashes may keep pace.

66. _____ was a must in the past in the American pilot recruitment.

A. Perfect eyesight.

B. Military training

C. Two college degrees

D. Medium height

67. Air Force pilots should stay in the Air Force because _____.

A. the Air Force is a good place to work.

B. the Air Force pays more than airlines.

C. the military should have a hard time keeping pilots.

D. the Air Force spends a lot of money training them.

68. Some people wouldn’t be good pilots because ______.

A. they can’t make decisions quickly.

B. they don’t earn spectacular salaries.

C. they weren’t recruited by foreign countries.

D. the number of crashes keeps pace with them.

69. The main idea of the article is that _____.

A. a shortage of pilots is caused by airlines and the military.

B. there have been more crashes because pilots have worse eyesight and higher salaries.

C. a shortage of pilots may lead to more crashes.

D. airlines should hire more pilots even if they’re unqual ified.

(B)

A diary is a daily record, especially of personal observations and experiences. Jinnie Huglin, a Californian kept a diary of an unfortunate event that happened off the coast of her state in 1969. Jannuary 29, 1969:Ahead of me, five miles out in the Pacific Ocean, is Platform A where an oil well blew out just a few days ago. Since then the oil has been bubbling up into the ocean. This evening’s newspaper headline said the words: GIANT OIL SLICK(浮油) SPREADING IN SANTA BARBARA CHANNEL.

January 30:Today’s headline – OIL SLICK NEARS RINCON BEACH – does not reassure me. The newspaper says that planes are dropping a chemical on the oil to try to break up the slick and that workmen on Platform A are trying to stop the leak with a special kind of mud. There are two pictures of oil-covered birds on the front page. A professor of biology told the newspaper, ―Particularly sad is the fate of the bird. They swallow the oil, which is poisonous.‖The oil slick now covers 390 square kilometers.

February 3: The Secretary of the Interior flew in from Washington D. C. last night to look at the damage. Today he announced that ―the pollution is much more severe than I expected,‖ and he asked the oil companies to stop drilling. They did.

The oil slick now covers 900 square kilometers.

February 5: I drove down to the harbor and stood in the rain, looking down at the water. The thick oil was everywhere – six inches deep, splashing against the boats and the docks. On the beach, men were spreading yellow str aw on the oil. ―Straw soaks up forty times its own weight in oil,‖ one of the men said.

The oil slick now covers 2000 square kilometers.

February 8: LEAK STOPPED, SAY OIL OFFICIALS.

Yesterday afternoon 1500 barrels an hour of mud were pumped into the oil well. Finally, by midnight, the flow of oil into the sea had stopped. I had been looking at pictures of oil-covered birds in the newspapers. Now I am finding these birds here on my beach.

February 9: I drove down to the bird-rescue station this evening with my first load of birds. A tall college student took one of the birds from me and gently washed it clean. Then two girls rinsed(漱口)it with warm water. After that some butter was pushed down its throat. ―It helps dissolve and clean out the oil in side them,‖ I was told.

February 12: Our President has entered the picture, thank heavens. He has appointed a group of scientists and engineers to figure out how to solve this problem and how to prevent it from happening again.

March 1: Perhaps our luck i s changing. A cheerful note in today’s paper: OIL LEAKAGE IS CUT BACK SUBSTANTIALL Y. Evidently the mud pumped down into the well is stopping the leak.

Spring 1970: It all started more than a year ago, and I have just been to a crowded, emotional, anniversary meeting of the disaster. There was one moment that was unforgettable –an eight-year-old girl told us about the world she wanted to live in. In her light young voice she spoke of drinking ―cold water from clean streams…‖ and of walking ―through fiel ds where trees and flowers grow and through forests where birds sing.‖

I wondered: Can we leave her a world like that? Or will those forests where birds sing be only

a dimly-remembered dream from her childhood?

70. Which of the following did not disturb the author?

A. The birds damaged by the oil.

B. The action taken by the Secretary of the Interior to stop the oil companies from drilling.

C. The oil’s settling on the beach.

D. Newspaper headlines about the oil spill.

71. The sea birds had to be fed butter in order to ______.

A. help them breathe properly.

B. clean the oil from their insides.

C. prevent them from eating the oil that was stuck to their feathers.

D. increase their appetite for their usual food.

72. The oil leak was finally stopped because _____.

A. the well was empty.

B. the oil company built another platform that was more efficient than Platform A.

C. the President called upon a team of experts to solve the problem.

D. the mud pumped down into the well began to work.

(C)

We are naturally attracted to people with ideas, beliefs and interests like our own. Similarly, we feel comfortable with people with physical similar to ours.

You may have noticed how people who live or work closely together come to behave in a similar way. Unconscio usly we copy those we are close to, or love, or admire. So a sportsman’s individual way of walking is imitated by an admiring fan; a pair of loves both shake their heads in the same way; an employee finds himself imitating his boss’s habit of moving a pen between his fingers while thinking.

In every case, the influential person may not consciously notice the imitation, but he will feel comfortable in its presence. And if he does notice the matching of his gestures or movements, he finds it flattering: he is influencing people, they are drawn to him.

Sensitive people have been mirroring their friends and acquaintances all their lives, and winning affection and respect in this way without being aware of their methods. Now for people who want to win agreement or trust, affection or sympathy, some psychologists recommend the use of physical mirroring.

The clever saleswoman echoes her lady customer’s movements, tilting her head in the same way to judge a color match, or folding her arms a few seconds after the customer, as though consciously attracted by her. The customer feels that the saleswoman is in sympathy with her, and understands she needs a promising relationship for a sale to take place.

The clever lawyer, trying in a law-court to influence a judg e, imitates the great man’s shrugging of his shoulders, the tone of his voice and the rhythm of his speech. Of course, physical mirroring must not be easy to notice. If you blink every time your target blinks, or bite your bottom lip every time he does, your mirroring has become mockery and you can expect trouble. So, if you can’t imitate your target sympathetically, don’t play the game.

73. The passage suggests that .

A.people who share in the same beliefs and interests often behave in a similar way

B.the dominant figure in a particular group of people is often the object of imitation.

C.one feels sympathy for people who are similar in behavior.

D.one unconsciously wins favor when taking action similar to his friend’s

74. Some psychologists seems .

A.to think of gesture imitation as a means to win agreement or trust

B.to propose purposeful popularizing certain gestures or movements

C.To recommend using physical imitation noticeably

D.To advise being sensitive to one’s friends’ behavior

75 In the sentence ―your m irroring has become mockery‖, mockery means .

A.the act of making fun of something

B.rude remark to make one extremely angry

C.joking behavior that usually causes amusement

D.funny performance which one feels humorous

76. How can a lawyer win the favor from a judge?

A. By blinking every time the judge blinks.

B. By dressing himself the same way the judge is dressed.

C. By imitating the judge’s speaking speed.

D. By biting the bottom lip as the judge does.

77. The best title for the passage is .

A.Physical Mirroring

B.The conscious Use of Physical Mirroring

C.The Proper Ways of Imitation

D.The Benefit of Physical Mirroring

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements no more than twelve words.

A time capsule buried by Apple founder Steve Jobs has been discovered recently after it was left buried for an extra ten years because its location was long forgotten.

In 1983, Steve Jobs, as a young tech innovator, was attending an international design conference in Aspen. During the conference, he and the group decided to bury a time capsule as a stunt. The time capsule was filled with a diverse collection of goods, ranging from the new apple mouse at that time to a six-pack of beer for the people who discovered it. The time capsule was meant to be dug up 20 years later. However, there was a problem with that plan as everyone involved forgot the place where it was buried.

The final discovery happened at the hands of the crew from the Na tional Geographic Channel’s program called Diggers. The discovery was well documented and even the experts had problems finding this particular treasure. Despite their preparations and clear idea of where the tube was, it still took them two hours to dig it up by using heavy machinery. To the technology industry, the finding of the time capsule appears to be a big accomplishment.

The most interesting object in the capsule would likely be the Lisa Mouse, which was placed in the tube by the hands of 28-year-old Jobs. The Lisa Mouse, which Jobs named after his daughter, was one of the first commercial computer mice sold publicly, making it a rarity at that time. Though the shape of mouse has changed over the past three decades, the internal components of mouse have remained largely the same.

78.When was the time capsule discovered?

79.What was the prize for the people who discovered the time capsule?

80.Why was the Lisa Mouse so unusual at that time?

81.What is the difference between the Lisa mouse and the mouse nowadays?

Sample 1

As the saying goes, behind each successful child is a great mother. Nobody can achieve success without parental love and Mother’s devotion plays an especially critical role in our life. Mothers dedicate almost everything we need, which is a necessary part on our road to great achievements.

My mother always gives me a helping hand in both my studies and my life. Since she is a math teacher, whenever I meet with any difficulty in the subject, she is always patient to give me guidance. On the other hand, she takes care of me in my life like other devoted mothers. Whenever I fall ill she spares no efforts to help me recover from the illnesses. It’s impossible for me to grow up and achieve success in my life without my mother.

In fact, no matter whether you are successful or not, mothers always stand behind you and back you up. Everyone knows that mother’s love is just like a flowing river, and it keeps running forever, pushing and carrying you forward to your destination of life and work. And what we can do is never to stop halfway. Only in this way can we treasure and repay the sacrifice and devotion of our mothers.

Sample 2

As the saying goes, behind each successful child is a great mother. Truly, it is the mother who loves her children most in the world.

The experience at the beginning of this semester is still fresh in my mind. Faced with the incredible study speed and unimaginable pressure, I was torn by anxiety. My mother who had just experienced a car accident encouraged me to be confident in myself and relaxed to face up to the difficulties in the same way as she was fighting against the suffering, ―Come on, baby,be happy! I know you can.‖

Such is my mum, who is neither too strict with me nor expecting too much of me.

The only thing she wishes is that I can live a content and delightful life. Mum’s love eases me of my study burden, and enables me to perform better in my study at the same time.

Mum’s love is the thread that leads me to the wonderland of happiness. I like to hug my dear mum and say to her loud, ―I LOVEYOU.‖
