例1

Tom Brenna was working in a Philadelphia office building when he noticed a black bag. The bag contained a book.

This chance discovery ended a 12-day search by the Library Company of Philadelphia for a historical treasure –a 120-page diary kept 190 years a go by Deborah Logan, “a woman who knew everybody in her day,〞James Green, the librarian told the magazine American Libraries.

Most of the diary is a record of big events in Philadelphia. It is also includes a description of British soldiers burning Washington, D.C. in the war of 1812. She describes President James Madison on horseback as “perfectly shaking with fear〞during the troubled days. George Washington, she writes, mistook her for the wife of a French man, and praised her excellent English.

The adventure of the lost book began September 4 when Cory Luxmoore arrived from England to deliver the diary of his ancestor (祖先) to the library Company, which he and his wife considered to be best home for the diary.

Green told American Libraries he had the diary in his possession “about five minutes〞

when Luxmoore took it back because he had promised to show it to one other person. On returning his hotel after showing the precious book to Green, Luxmoore was shocked to realise that he had left it in the taxi.

Without any delay, Green began calling every taxi company in the city, with no luck. “I’ve felt sick since then,〞Luxmoore told reporters.

According to Green, no one has yet learned how the diary came to the office building. Tom Brennan received a reward of $1,000, Philadelphia gained another treasure for hit history. And Luxmoore told reporters, “It’s wonderful news. I’m on high.〞

1. From the text, we learn that the diary is now owned by _______.

A. Tom Brenna

B. an unknown person

C. a Philadelphia magazine

D. the library Company of Philadelphia

2. Philadelphia is thought to be the best home for the diary because ________.

A. it was written in Philadelphia

B. it tells stories about Philadelphia

C. people in the city are interested in old things

D. the British and Americans once fought in Philadelphia

3. Which of the following shows the right order of what happened to the diary?

a. Tom Brennan found the book in an office building

b. The book was shown to James Green

c. Cory Luxmoore arrived from England

d. The book was left behind in a taxi

A. a, b, c, d

B. c, b, d, a

C. a, c, d, b

D. c, a, b, d

This chance discovery ended a 12-day search by the Library Company of Philadelphia for a historical treasure… ; The adventure of the lost book began September 4 when Cory Luxmoore arrived from England to deliver the diary of his ancestor (祖先) to the library Company, which he and his wife considered to be best home for the diary. Most of the diary is a record of big events in Philadelphia.

We usually say that people have five senses. Senses are the way that we learn what is happening around us. The five senses are sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.

Each sense depends on a special organ of the body. This organ receives the information and then the nerves send this information to the brain. For example, eyes control sight. Ears control hearing, and skin controls touch. Taste depends on the taste buds on the tongue, and smell depends on the nose.

In addition, there are also other senses which are equally as important. There is a sense of balance which stops us from falling down. We also have senses of hunger, thirst, and heat and cold.

We may conclude from the passage that all senses are greatly controlled by _____.

A. the nerves in the hands

B. the brain

C. a special organ of the human body

D. the eyes, ears, and nose

Each sense depends on a special organ of the body. 这里,他们忽略了两点:1〕题干是… that all senses are greatly controlled by … Each sense depends on a special organ of the body. This organ receives the information and then the nerves send this information to the brain.

Lakeland, Florida, April 29 --- two cars dropped from sight, falling into the bottom of a 30-foot deep sinkhole which appeared suddenly. At a town 13 miles from Lakeland, two bedrooms of one house dropped into a hole 60 feet across and 35 feet deep. Part of the next house hung dangerously over the hole.

Sinkholes have been happening without warning in this part for years. So far there is no way to predict (预告) when or where one will appear. But when one does, others usually follow in the same area, usually along a straight line.

The worst sinkhole in recent years appeared in 1965. It was 70 feet across and 150 feet deep. I t destroyed one house, damaged several others and broke the walls of a city block.

One hole, 15 feet deep, opened up this year in the middle of a highway 19 seconds after a car had driven by. Others in the same area took place at night damaging houses, swallowing(吞没) up trees and parts of streets and making 23 frightened persons run away from their homes in night clothes.

Sinkholes happen when the weather is dry. The earth at the surface begins to drop into empty space under the ground, like sand falling in huge hourglass(沙漏) . This is how a sinkhole is formed.

When one sinkhole appears, others usually follow _______.

A. everywhere

B. on a straight highway only

C. nearby

D. in the places far away

其原因是将原文中〔But when one does, others usually follow in the same area, usually along a straight line.〕usually along a straight line 与选项B on a straight highway only 等同起来。故正确选项为C,根据是… others u sually follow in the same area。

例4

People in the Middle East use a special pot for holding drinking water. This pot allows water to be slowly absorbed by the clay . As the absorbed water reaches the outer surface of the pot, it evaporates quickly because of the dry air. Because evaporation (蒸发) water absorbs heat from their surroundings, evaporation acts as a cooling process . This process, in turn, cools the pot. The pot then cools the water held in the pot. Thus, we have an “air-powered cooler〞; the clay also absorbs some of the dirt it the water, thus making it taste purer.

This type of pot has various shapes in different parts of the Middle East.

The “zeer〞in Egypt comes to a point at the bottom. Since it does not have a flat bottom, it is usually supported in wooden or metal holder. The water that has reached the surface of the pot runs down the sides of the pot and drips (滴) off the pointed bottom.

1 Where does the zeer work as a water cooler?

A. In East Asia

B. In any place in the world

C. In places where it is hot and dry

D. In places where there is plenty of water

2.Which is the right order for showing how the zeer works as a water cooler?

a. The clay cools

b. Water goes through the clay and reaches the outer surface

c. The pot cools

d. The water cools

e. Water evaporates to the air around it

f. The evaporating water absorbs the heat around it

A. b, e, f, a, c, d

B. f, a, b, e, d, c

C. b, e, f, a, d, c

D. f, a, b, d, c, e

注释

第1小题如选择A就错了,原因是题干中〔Where does the zeer work as a water cooler?〕work 的含义是“起作用〞,因此正确选项为C.

American doctors say that mothers who smoke before their babies are born may slow the growth of their babies’ lungs. They say reduced lung growth could cause the babies suffer

breathing problems and lung diseases later in life. Doctors in Boston, Massachusetts studied 1,100 children. The mothers of some of the children smoked, the other mothers did not. Doctors found that the lungs of the children whose mothers smoked were 8% less developed than the lungs of the children whose mothers did not smoke, and that the children whose mothers smoked developed 20% more cold and breathing diseases than other children later in life.

Another recent study found that children had a greater chance of developing lung cancer if their mothers smoked. The study also showed that the danger of lung cancer increased only for sons and not for daughters, and that the father’s smoking did not affect a child’s chance of developing lung cancer.

Suppose John’s father was a heavy smoker, so was Mary’s mother. According to this text _________.

A. John is more likely to develop lung cancer

B. Mary is more likely to develop lung cancer

C. John and Mary have the same chance to develop lung cancer

D. Neither John nor Mary has more chance to develop lung cancer than other children

Another recent study found that children had a greater chance of developing lung cancer if their mothers smoked. The study also showed that the danger of lung cancer increased only for sons and not for daughters, and that the father’s smoking did not affect a child’s chance of developing lung cancer.

When Charles Stratton was five, he stopped growing. His mother took him to see the famous showman. P. T. Barnum. Mr. Barnum thought a small person would be the perfect addition to his show. He hired Charles’ parents along with him, and they traveled the world together.

He gave the two-foot-tall Charles a new name, General Tom Thumb. He taught Tom how to sing, dance, act, and tell jokes. When he felt Tom was ready to perform on stage, he made up ads. To stir up (激起) great interest, he said that Tom was eleven years old and had come from England. During the show, Tom fought battles with tall people. He also danced upon a wooden plate held by a person who was eight feet tall.

Tom’s act was very popular and brought in a lot of money. By the time Tom was an adult, he had grown very rich. He had become a billionaire at the age of twenty-five.

Fortunately for Tom, Mr. Barnum added more little people to his show, and Tom became lucky in love as well. One of the little people was Lavinia Warren, a school teacher. Tom was able to win her love, and they married.

The ceremony and reception were the talk of the town. They were attended by many rich and famous people and by about two thousand guests. Crowds filled the streets of New York to have a look at their tiny wedding carriage. The couple even met with President Abraham Lincoln on their honeymoon, just before going to live in Tom’s house in Connecticut.

Their wedding, which took place during the Civil War, provided a welcome escape from the sad problems of war. Not willing to let this bit of sunshine fade , communities throughout the country

sponsored〔赞助)“Tom Thumb〞weddings. In these weddings, small boys and girls, all dressed up, went through marriage ceremony for fun.

What did the writer try to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Weddings always make people feel full of sunshine.

B. People are always disappointed during war time.

C. Entertainment can serve an important purpose

D. People should be married when they are small children

Weddings always make people feel full of sunshine.〔选项A〕; 而且文章第一句就开门见山地说明Their wedding, which took place during the Civil War, provided a welcome escape from the sad problems of war. Charles Stratton’s wedding;“can serve an important purpose〞指provided a welcome escape from the sad problems of war.

例7

This book tells about the development of the English people, their forms of government and their language. It shows how they became united with their neighbours in Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and how together they formed the British Empire and helped to form the United States of America. As the writer explains on page 87, it is a history of England because England is the base on which the rest was built.

The study of the past helps us to understand the present. It is hoped that this book will help the readers to understand better the British people of today.

According to the article, we study history in order to understand ______.

A. only the past

B. nothing but the present

C. the present as well as the present

D. better the British people of today

The study of the past helps us to understand the present.并不说明… we study history in order to understand nothing but the present (选项B); It is hoped that this book will help the readers to understand better the British people of today.也不说明… we study history in order to understand better the British people of today.〔选项D〕。 The study of the past helps us to understand the present.

Jacks is the name of a game that is quite popular with children. To play jacks you will need a small rubber ball and ten metal objects called jacks.

The rules for this game are not complicated . To begin, you put the ten jacks on the floor or ground in front of you. Throw the ball up but not too high, pick up one jack. And then catch the ball. Keep the jack in your hand and then go on picking up the other jacks one at a time. You lose your turn if you do not catch the ball, you do not pick up a jack or you drop any jacks from your hand.

When you finish all ten jacks, you now try to do the same thing again but with two jacks at one time. This is more difficult, of course. You lose your turn if you make any of the other three mistakes or if you do not pick up exactly two jacks each time.

A good title for this passage is ______.

A. An easy game

B. Throwing A Ball

C. Two Jacks

D. A Ball And Ten Jacks

2014高考英语阅读理解练习(8)及答案(解析)C8[2012·全国卷Ⅱ] You may think that sailing is a d ifficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind. First, you must ask yourself,“Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail. Let's start with the wind blowing from behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90°angle(角度)to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best. If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45°angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn't flap(摆动).It shouldn't look like a flag on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down. Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can't go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat. 45. What should you consider first while sailing? A.Sailors' strength. B.Wave levels. C.Wind directions. D.Size of sails. 46.What does the word “It” underlined in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.The boat. B.The wind. C.The sail. D.The angle. 47.What do you have to do when sailing against the wind? A.Move in a straight line. B.Allow the sail to flap.

H. B. Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions, Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story. 65. How do Twain’s novels on slavery differ from Stowe’s? A. Twain was more willing to deal with racism.

1.直接信息题 【典例】(2020·某某卷A篇节选) 50 Honorable Mentions:Judges will choose up to 50 honorable mention winners, who will each receive a T-shirt in memory of Earhart’s final flight. What will each of the honorable mention winners get? A. A plane ticket. B. A book by Corinne Szabo. C. A special T-shirt. D. A photo of Amelia Earhart.

根据50 Honorable Mentions这一段“Judges will choose up to 50 honorable mention winners, who will each receive a T-shirt in memory of Earhart's final flight”,由此可知,纪念奖是送的T恤,故选C。 2.间接信息题 【典例】(2020·某某卷B篇节选) Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors.Jennifer sacrificed (牺牲) to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids andmissing important events to study.“Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers,”she says. However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her

一般包括直接理解题(在原文中可直接找到答案,常用who, what, when, where, why和how等提问。) When / Where did the story happen? Which of the following statements is (NOT) correct? Which of the following statements is (NOT) mentioned in the passage? Which is the right order of the events given in the passage? All the statements are true EXCEPT…

全国高考复习英语阅读理解专题事实细节Passage 5(2012·高考大纲卷) Make Up Your Mind to Succeed Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s a winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before. As a result,Stanford University professor Carol Dweck,PhD,calls them “the overpraised generation.” Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it.Here’s how they work: A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent (才能) is genetic —you’re a born artist, point guard,or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult,it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties. On the other hand,a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible.Because the ego (自尊) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty,it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact,it enjoys this experience. We are all born with growth mind-sets.(Otherwise,we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise.Dweck’s book,Mind-set:The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure. 1.What does the author think about the present generation? A.They don’t do well at school. B.They are often misunderstood. C.They are eager to win in sports. D.They are given too much praise. 2.A fixed mind-set person is probably one who ________. A.doesn’t want to work hard B.cares a lot about personal safety C.cannot share his ideas with others D.can succeed with the help of teachers 3.What does the growth mind-set believe? A.Admitting failure is shameful. B.Talent comes with one’s birth. C.Scores should be highly valued. D.Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.

Early last year, I was troubled by an anxiety that crippled ( 削弱) my ability to do anything. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me. My perfectionist tendencies were the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at whatever I did, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me. One day, I attended a presentation by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His presentation not only awed and inspired me, but also helped emerge an inner desire to make a difference in the world. I joined a pre-presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my courage to speak one-on-one with him—an idea that had seemed completely impossible.
