19. Treasure hunts(寻宝)have excited people''''s imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson''''s Treasure Island.Kit Williams,a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues(线索)found in a book when he wrote a children''''s

story,Masquerade,in 1979.The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of “red herrings”,or false clues,to mislead them.

Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years.Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time,he found it by logic(逻辑),not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words:“One of Six to Eight” under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII''''s six wives.Even here, however,Williams had succeeded in misleading him.Ken knew

that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridge shire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him.He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill,in

Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a

place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses

in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.

Even then his search had not come to an end.It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to

write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there.Williams encouraged him to continue, and on February 24th 1982,he found the treasure. It was worth £3000 in the

beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable. What is the most important clue in the story to help Ken Robertsfind the hare?

Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they

met some whales(鲸鱼). “They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water.

For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water — two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw(生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface. I caught them with my hands.”

About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. They couldn’t stand up. So the captain carried them onto his boat and

34. Certainly no creature in the sea is odder than the common sea cucumber(海参). All living creatures, especially human beings, have their peculiarities, but everything about the little sea cucumber seems unusual.

What else can be said about an odd animal that, among other eccentricities, eats mud, feeds almost continuously day and night but can live without eating for long periods, and can be poisonous but is considered supremely edible by gourmets(美食家)?

For some fifty million years, despite all eccentricities, the sea cucumber has subsisted on its diet of mud. It is adaptable enough to live attached to rocks by its tube feet, under rocks in shallow water,

or on the surface of mud flats. Common in cool water on both Atlantic and Pacific shores, it has the ability to such up mud or sand and digest whatever nutrients are present.

Sea cucumbers come in a variety of colors, ranging from black to reddish-brown to sand-color and nearly white. One form even has vivid purple tentacles. Usually the creatures are cucumber-shaped — hence their name — and because they are typically rock inhabitants, this shape, combined with flexibility, enables them to squeeze into narrow cracks where they are safe from predators and ocean currents.

Although they have voracious appetites, eating day and night, sea cucumbers have the capacity to become inactive and live at a low metabolic rate — (ceding sparingly or not at all for long periods, so that the marine organisms that provide their food have a chance to multiply. If it were not for this faculty, they would devour all the food available in a short time and would probably starve themselves out of existence.

But the most spectacular thing about the sea cucumber is the way it defends itself. Its major enemies are fish and crabs, when attacked, it squirts all its internal organs into the water. It also casts off attached structures such as tentacles. The sea cucumber will eviscerate(排出内脏) and regenerate itself if it is attacked or even touched; it will do the same if the surrounding water temperature is too high or if the water becomes too polluted. The passage is mainly about ______.

二、阅读理解单项选择题(本大题共60分,共 6 小题,每小题 10 分)

1.

During the 19th century, scientists found that when certain parts of the brain of a person were hurt, he would lose the power of doing certain things. And so people thought that each part of the brain does a different job. But modem research discovered that this is not so, for it is not easy to show exactly what each part of the brain does.In the past fifty years there has been a great increase in the amount of research done on the brain. Scientists have found out the way the brain works is not so simple as people in general may think. Chemists fell us that about 100,000 chemical changes take place in the brain every second. Some recent researches also suggest that we can remember everything that happens to us. We, may not be able to think of the things we have heard and seen, but it is kept there in the storehouse (宝库) of the human brain. Earlier scientists thought that is not true. As long as the brain is given plenty of exercise,

it keeps its power. It has been proved that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young person who has only done physical work without using much of his brain.(1). It would be difficult to have a society like ours without public goods such as defense, transportation, and other services.

A public good is one that a person can use without reducing the use of it for another person. One of the best examples of a public good

is national defense. One person can benefit from our national defense without reducing another person''s benefits. In fact, it is difficult to keep any person in our society from enjoying the benefits of

national defense.

The market system does not work well in producing public goods. This is because a person who refuses to pay for a public good cannot be kept from using it. Suppose that the neighbors in a high crime area decide to hire a police force. Each neighbor, except Mrs. Smith, agrees to pay S 100 a year for it. Mrs. Smith refuses to pay because she knows that if all the others pay the $ 100, the police will guard the area anyway. So Mrs. Smith can enjoy the services of the police force without paying $100.The market system has no way to deal with this type of problem. For this reason, we cannot ask each person to make a direct payment in the form of product price. Therefore, we collect money for public goods by using taxes.(1). As you are students of English, it’s very possible that you’ll be interested in England. That’s where the language was first spoken. But England is often called by other names. This often confuses

people and I wonder if you know what these names mean. So, now I

would like to tell you about this matter of names. I believe that you have heard people use the names—England, Britain or Great Britain. Let’s see what each of these names means.

If you look at a map of Europe, you’ll see a group of islands—one larger island off the northwest coast, one smaller and many tiny ones.

These make up what is called the British Isles (不列颠群岛). The largest island of the British Isles is Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The smaller island is Ireland (爱尔兰).

Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England. But sometimes the Word “England” is used instead of “Britain”. Why so?

In ancient times, what is Britain now used to be three different countries. People in These different countries spoke different language. Over many years the three countries became one. England is the largest and richest of the three and it has the most people. So the English people take it for granted that their own name stands for the whole island. There’s another thing that confuses people: sometimes you may hear people say “the Untied Kingdom of Great

Britain and Northern Ireland”. That is official name of the country. Northern Ireland is only one sixth of the island of Ireland. The rest of the island is an independent state, called the Republic of Ireland. So we have the names of “England”, “Britain”, “Great Britain”, and “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. Now do you know what each of them means?(1). English was first spoken in ( )

Britain

England

5. Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people''s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle compare their own performance with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or dong this or not. If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time to such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can''t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must someday learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.(1). According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things

is by ( )

listening to skilled people's advice

B.

asking older people many questions

I worked for a short time as a cashier(收银员) at a restaurant a few months ago; I also

helped clear off the tables when it was especially busy. One night, just before Christmas, I found a large wallet on the floor near one of the tables. I guess I should have checked it to find out who was the owner, but I was very busy at the time. Also, I imagined that if the wallet contained anything valuable, the owner would be back. Sure enough, an-hour later a man came up to the counter and asked if anyone had found a wallet. After he described the wallet exactly, I returned it to him. He expressed his sincere thanks when I handed it to him. He asked me if I had opened it, and when I told him " No", he immediately opened it and showed that it contained nearly $800 in cash. I gasped as he took out a twenty-dollar bill and handed it to me. “A reward for your honesty,” he said and then turned and walked away.

Thinking about it later, I began wondering whether I would have been so honest if I hadknown what was in the wallet! I think that if there had been no way to find the owner and no one had returned to claim(认领) it, I might have kept it.
