Lightning is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena(现象).It is also one of the most deadly phenomena.

A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface(表面)of the Sun and gives out 30,000 amps of electricity(电).It can travel at 100, 000 kilometres per hour and has the ability to hit an object up to 40 kilometres away. About 1,000 people around the world are killed by lightning every day.

Only about ten percent of people struck by lightning will actually die, but the others are actually very badly injured, with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity passes through their brain, it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects. Some blind people have got their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological(心理的)test showed her intelligence (智力)had greatly improved, and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature below freezing in just a T-shirt!

So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm? The most important rule is to stay inside, but do not go near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing, or water. If you are stuck(困住)outside, do not take shelter under a tree. Instead, roll yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible. And do mot think it has to be raining in order for lightning to strike.

Strangely, lightning seems to prefer some people to others. If you are a man, you are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than a woman!

Maybe you know floods, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have you heard of typhoons(台风)?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually Array around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most

happen in July, August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water

gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates(蒸发)into the

air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles(圆圈)and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts, one is called the "eye". In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. Here are the strongest winds and hardest rams.

Typhoons are very dangerous. What shall we do when a typhoon hits?

◆Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.

◆Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!

One morning the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said:

"Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff

I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me

because I'm going to tell you something very

important."

"Yes, sir!" answered Ben Weatherstaff.

"I'm going to do a scientific(科学的)experiment(实验)," he said seriously. "When I grow up, I'm going to make scientific discoveries(发现) about magic and I'm going to start with experiment. Do you understand?"

"Yes, sir!" said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn't really understand.

There's magic in the garden, too. I'm going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. I'm going to say: "Magic is in me!" And you must all say it, too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?"

"Yes, sir!" said Ben Weatherstaff.

They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious.

"Now let's begin," Colin said, and they all started chanting(吟唱).

"Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us."

Then Colin stood up and walked round the garden. He went in front with Dickon on one side and Mary on the other. Ben Weatherstaff walked behind.

Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again and rested again. At first he held Dickon's arm then he walked a few steps alone.

"I can walk! The magic worked!" he cried.

"What is the doctor going to say?" asked Mary.

"Nothing," Colin answered, "because we aren't going to tell him. No one must know that I can walk and run. It's a surprise for my father when he comes back to Misselthwaite."

"He's going to think it's a dream," said Mary.

My first home was a beautiful meadow(牧场) with a pond of clear water. There were some large trees near the pond. On one side of the meadow was a field and on the other was the house of our master, Farmer Grey. He was a kind man.

My mother and I had a happy life. She worked during the day. I played with the other young horses and had great fun. At night I lay next to her.

One day, my master sold me to Squire Gordon. He lived with his family in a big house.

"You are a beautiful horse," he said. "You have a beautiful coat. I shall call you Black Beauty."

I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I learned to wear reins(疆绳)and a bit in my mouse. I did not like them, but all the horses had to wear them.

My master had two horses. One of them was Merrylegs. He was very friendly. The other was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.
