I started to learn English from the first grade. That

year I was six. In class I learned basic phrases for

greeting and describing objects. I don't have much

memory for the first year of English learning. The only thing that I still remember is reading vocabulary list. A classmate of mine who was good at English would lead the whole class to read the list. One of the new words that I learned that year was “earth”. “The earth orbits the sun,”he said in Chinese. Every time we came to the word “earth”,he would repeat that sentence. I was secretly admiring him because he knew the earth orbits the sun.

My family moved when I was in my second grade, and I transferred (转学) to a private school. My English class continued. Luckily I could use the same series of text books.

I stayed in the same private school for my junior high school, which is from the 7th to the 9th grade. In junior high school, I hardly felt my English skill improved because the first English class here was still titled “Good Morning” and the content was still basic greetings.

Sunitha Suresh was a college student when her grandmother had a major operation and was put in intensive care (特别护理) with three other patients. This meant her family couldn't always be with her. They decided to put her favorite Indian music on an iPod, so she could listen around the clock.

Sunitha could see the music relaxed her grandmother and made her feel less anxious, but she wondered if she also felt less pain. That would make sense because anxiety can make people more sensitive to pain. At the time Sunitha was majoring in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University where her father, Santhanam Suresh, is a professor. So father and daughter decided to work together on a study.

It was a small study, with 60 patients between 9 and 14 years old taking part in it. All the patients, who were children, had big operations that required them to stay in hospital for at least a couple of days. Right after their operations, the patients took medicine to control pain. The next day they were divided into three groups. One group listened to 30 minutes of music of their choice, one listened to 30 minutes of stories of their choice and one listened to 30 minutes of silence via noise canceling headphones.

To measure pain, the researchers presented a smiling, frowning (皱眉) and crying face. The children pointed to which picture best showed their level of pain before and after they listened to music, stories and silence. After a 30-minute session, the children who listened to music or stories reduced their pain burden by 1 point on a 10-point scale (级别) compared to the children who listened to silence. That might not sound like much, but Sunitha says it equals to pain medication like Advil or Tylenol.

Children don't tolerate such medication as well as adults. They are smaller and are more likely to suffer side effects from pain medication such as trouble breathing and feeling of disgust. So the less pain medication, the better.

Public libraries have had another bad year. They are like local railways. People like having them around, and are angry if they close. But as for using them, there is so little time these days.

To the US historian Matthew Battles the library is a metaphor (隐喻) for the land of chance, a place where, lost in the piles, new Americans could “dream of personal success, unaided by unnamed others, a stage with a mirror for backdrop (背景幕布) that reflects only the reader”. In Britain, the library was a grammar school, a teach-yourself academy, a way of learning.

Digitization has changed everything. The public library is no longer a place sacred to knowledge. Its walls have been bombed open. So much rubbish is said and written about the death of books. Five years ago, when Amazon ebook sales were higher than those of paperback copies, it was assumed the book was dying. Print was yesterday, one more victim of the

great digital wipeout. But Waterstones last year stopped selling Kindles and changed the shelf space to physical books. It saw a 5% rise in sales. Though the bookshop has suffered, the book has not.

But these are buyers, not borrowers. The library must rediscover its specialness. This strength lies not in books, but in its readers, in their desire to gather, share with each other, hear writers and experience books with a group. It is in plays, concerts, comedy, lectures, debates, quizzes, performances of every sort. It should combine coffee shops, book exchanges, playgroups, art galleries, museums and performances.

Ever since the days of Alexandria, the library has been the palace of the mind, the “University of All”. The Internet has removed its complet e control of knowledge, but cannot copy its sense of place, its joy of human gathering.

必修8 Module 1Deep South Antarctica: the Last Continent Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. It’s also the driest. With annual rainfall close to zero, Antarctica is technically a desert. Covering about 14 million square kilometers around the South Pole, it is the fifth largest continent in the world.
