On 15 October 2003, the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft flew around the Earth 14 times. The space flight lasted 21 hours and the 38-year-old astronaut landed safely at 6:23 a.m. the next day in Inner Mongolia. China is now the third country, after the Soviet Union and the USA, to send a person into space.
Yang Liwei was born in Liaoning in 1965 and in 1987 he joined the Chinese Air Force and became a pilot. 11 years later, he joined the Chinese space programme with 13 other pilots. He trained for five years to be an astronaut. He was one of the best astronauts in the team.
People on earth watched Yang Liwei’s space flight on TV. He waved to everyone on earth and showed the Chinese national flag. Today he’s China’s first astronaut, and a nationa l hero.

How to become a successful speaker of English
Some students often say “My spoken English is poor.” Others say “Speaking English is very hard for me.” In fact, a lot of Chinese students can speak good English. They worry that they won’t be able to speak as well as other people.
Here are some suggestions for you.
The first thing you can do is to speak English with good friends, so you can speak freely without feeling shy.
Then, try to speak to teachers and foreigners if possible. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Thirdly, try to think in English.
Fourthly, do more reading to expand your vocabulary and learn to use the new words in your speech as much as possible.
Lastly, don’t get angry with yourself when you come across something you cannot express in English. Just keep practising regularly.
