It’s not usual for a student to teach a class. But seventh-grader Hassan Shafi did it.

Shafi is from River School in California, US. He started a coding (编程) class for his classmates. He is the first student at his school to do so. Now he is teaching 25 to 30 students four days a week.

In fact, Shafi is an experienced (有经验的) teacher. At 8, he began teaching his friends about the art and science of coding. He thinks it is fun to teach.

Shafi fell in love with coding after watching programmers (程序员) work at his father’s office. He went to many coding camps, too. All his friends asked him to teach them what he learned.

Shafi is not a bossy (专横的) teacher. He lets the kids make their own study plans. He sets goals for them to learn computer languages like tJava and Javascript. them back to life, according to The Guardian newspaper.

Woolly mammoths can be up to 3.5 meters tall. They have small ears and long body

hair. They can live in very cold places.

Scientists from Harvard University will use gene technology (基因技术) to do the

job. In the past, people found dead woolly mammoths in Siberia (西伯利亚). Scientists got DNA from the mammoths’ bodies.

They will combine (混合) the mammoth DNA with that of an Asian elephant. The Asian elephant is the woolly mammoth’s closest relative. So the new mammoth will look like both of them. Scientists will call it a “mammophant”.

Are we alone in space (宇宙)? Is Earth the only planet that has life? These are big questions in the science world. Now we may get one step closer to the answers.

On Feb 22, NASA said they found seven Earth-like planets. They are all about the same size as Earth.

The planets go around a dwarf star (矮星) called Trappist-1. It is much smaller and cooler than our sun. They are about 39 light-years (光年) from Earth. That seems too far away from us. But scientists say it’s kind of close in space.

The seven planets are very close to one another. If you lived on one of them, you could possibly see the clouds of the next planet.

More importantly, three of the planets are at the perfect distance (完美的距离) from their sun. It means there could be liquid water (液态水) on them. If there is liquid water, there could be life.

It is the first finding like this for scientists. Next, they will try to find out if the planets have atmospheres (大气).

Australian people really love sports. Schools often hold some sports activities. We learn

to play different sports. Recently, we went bowling (保龄球).

Teachers first taught us the basic rules. It was easy for us to understand. Then we went

to a bowling alley (球场) outside. We were in small groups. The bowling balls were very big.

So it was hard for us to control the direction of throwing the ball. We tried to roll it in a straight way. But it often went left or right and into the gutter (槽).

We felt a little upset. But at last we found some skills to hit more pins (木瓶). For example, I chose a heavy ball because it hardly changed direction.u And I just pushed the ball in a relaxed way. I even knocked down all of the pins in one go! That is called a strike (全中).

In sci-fi movies, people grow potatoes on Mars. But they have to do it in a

greenhouse (温室). It is because the environment on Mars is very different from

ours.

Mars has a very thin atmosphere (大气). There is strong radiation (辐射).

The average temperature (平均温度) there is about -63 C.

But could potatoes grow outside in Mars’ soil? It is possible!

Researchers from the International Potato Center (IPC) did an experiment (实验).

They first made a box called a CubeSat. Inside the box, the atmosphere and air pressure are just like on Mars.

Then they put some soil from Peru’s (秘鲁的) Pampas de la Joya Desert in the CubeSat. Soil there is much like that on Mars.

Finally the researchers put potato pieces inside the soil. They closed the box and watched.

After some time, they were happy to see a sprout (萌芽). A potato plant grew in Mars-like soil!

Next, the researchers will test what kind of potatoes will grow best in a Mars-like environment.

I love you, so I let you go

There was once a lonely girl who longed for love. One day when she was walking in the woods she found two hungry birds. She took them home and put them in a small cage. She cared for them with love and the birds grew strong. Every morning, they greeted her with a wonderful song. The girl felt great love for the birds.

One day the girl left the cage door open. One bird flew from the cage. The girl was afraid that he would fly away. As he flew close, she grasped him wildly. She was very happy to catch him.

Suddenly she felt the bird unable to walk. She opened her hand and looked in horror at the dead bird. Her love killed him.

She noticed the other bird moving back and forth on the edge of the cage. She could feel his great need for freedom. She lifted him from the cage and let him fly into the air. She wanted the bird to be happy.

Thomas Edison was an American inventor. When he was 7 years old, his

mother had an appendectomy (阑尾切除手术). But it was too dark. So Edison put

mirrors (镜子) near oil lamps (油灯) to light up the room.

The story is in a Chinese textbook for pr imary school students by People’s

Education Press (人民教育出版社). Perhaps many of you have read it before. But

the publisher (出版社) recently said it will cut out this story. That’s because many

people think it’s not true. Many believe that the world’s first appe ndectomy was in 1886. But when Edison was 7, it was 1854.

The publisher also said it will not use some other stories. For example, there’s a story about the first US President George Washington. The story says young Washington cut down a cherry (樱桃) tree in the yard of his house. But in fact, there was no cherry tree in the area at that time.

So what’s the problem? Experts (专家) say that some editors (编辑) care too much about the educational meaning of stories, without checking if the story is true first.

The publisher says, in the future, they will pay greater attention to the truth of the stories in the textbook. “We will invite experts to check our stories,” it said in a statement.

Choose the answer:

( ) 1. The textbook said Thomas Edison _____.

A. was the inventor of mirrors

B. invented the light from oil lamps

C. did an appendectomy for his mother at the age of 7

D. helped light up the room during her mother’s appendectomy

( ) 2. When was Thomas Edison born?

A. In 1847.

B. In 1854.

C. In 1879.

D. In 1886. ( ) 3. Why will the publisher cut out George Washington’s story?

A. Because nobody should make stories about a president.

B. Because it’s wrong for a president to cut down trees.

C. Because many people think it’s not true.

D. Because George Washington didn’t live there at that time.

( ) 4. What will the publisher do in the future?

A. They will ask experts to check if stories are true.

B. They will pay more attention to the educational meaning of stories.

C. They will invite experts to write stories for textbooks.

D. They will care more about the editors’ work.
