ALarry was on another of his underwater expeditions(探险)but this time, it was different. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for.Larry first began diving when he was his daughter’s age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were either too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exception. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide. Children his age were not even allowed to dive. After the first expedition, Larry’s later diving adventures only got better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened on his back, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes, he was limited to a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures.Larry’s first expedition without his f ather was in the Cayman Islands. There were numerous diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them. Fortunately for him, a man offered to take him around the different spots for free. Larry did not even know what the time was, how many spots he dived into or how many photographs he had taken. The diving spots afforded such a wide array of fish and sea creatures that Larry saw more than thirty varieties of creatures.Larry looked at his daughter. She looked as excited as he had been when he was her age.He hoped she would be able to continue the family tradition. Already, she looked like she was much braver than Larry had been then. This was the key to a successful underwater expedition.21. In what way was this expedition different for Larry?A. controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth.“We try to make it smart but also fun,”Serval says.Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said“yes,”but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry.He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed. The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199,depending on features. The U.S.is the first target market.Serval says that one day,it’ll be perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑).Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes“mindlessly”by taking down word for word what the professors said.In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts. The researchers’ report said,“While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.”In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.33.More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can.A.write more notesB.digest concepts betterC.get higher scoresD.understand lectures better34.While taking notes, laptop users tend to be.A.skillfulB.mindlessC.thoughtfulD.tireless35.The passage is likely to Nobody cares if your marriage is happy or not, she said, I think this is very wrong and I intend to live and act according to my own will.”Happily for her, her parents are open-minded and not put pressure on her. On most days, our grades were based on our oral answers to homework questions.Mrs.Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the front or the back of the classroom and work toward the other end.S ince I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time, I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations. What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate. As Mrs.Totten made her way from the beginning of the class, I desperately tried to determine which math problem I would get. I tried to work it out before she got to me, but I had brain freeze and couldn’t function. When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I’d got for problem No.14.“I (I)didn’t get anything,” I answered, and my face felt warm.“Correct,” she said.It turned out that the correct answer was zero. What did I learn that day? First, always do all your homework. Second, in real life it isn’t always what you say but how you say it that matters. Third, I would never make it as a mathematician. If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.32.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 indicate?A. ABorrowing to start a business is not easy. Getting a bank loan, particularlyfor a new small business, is like going through the eye of a needle.Banks favor established-business people with a solid credit rating and a largebank account. They should also have experience in the business they propose to enter, and offer well-prepared business plans that show the ability to repay the loans. If you are not such a person, then you need to double your preparations to convincethe banker to lend you that much needed start-up capital(资金). If your businessis new and small, bankers will need to know as much as possible about you and your business. However, many small business owners often make the mistake of not being well prepared when going to the bank to apply for the loan. Surprisingly, many loan applicants don't even have the slightest idea how or when they intend to repay themoney they request. Often they don't even know how much money they need. When askedhow much money they want to borrow, many people give these two common responses:“How much money can I get?” and “As much as possible.” Is it any wonder thatlenders say no?So the most important thing is do your homework before you ask for a loan.21. By saying “Getting a bank loan.., is like going through the eye of a needle”,the writer emphasizes______.A. the ability to borrow from a bankB. the importance of borrowing moneyC. the difficulty of getting a bank loanD. the start-up of a new small business22. Banks prefer to give a loan to those who ______.A. are in need of start-up capitalB. have the ability to pay it backC. own an old and large businessD. haven't borrowed moneybefore23. The writer advises that before applying for a bank loan, the applicant should____.A. thoroughly prepareB. do some market researchC. learn a lot about the bankD. know the upper limit of the loansBA new weapon is on the way in the fight against smoking in Europe. Soon whensmokers buy cigarettes they might see a shocking photo of a blackened lung or a cancerpatient staring back at them from the packet. Some boys may think of smoking as cool and sex y. Their friends won’t agreewhen they see their packets of cigarettes lying on the table. The European Unionannounced on October 22, that it had chosen 42 photos that showed the damagecigarettes could do to the body. It called on member nations to put these pictureson packets to discourage smokers. To catch the attention of teenagers, the specialpackets warn of long-term medical dangers, like cancer. Short-term effects, likebad skin, are also on the list.“The true face of smoking is disease, death and horror. That is the messagewe should send to the young,” said David Byrne, an EU health official. “Hopefullythese pictures will sh ock students out of their love for cigarettes.”The EU head office hoped the pictures would work better than current writtenwarnings on packs of cigarettes. Sperm whales, of all the whales and dolphins, are the species that dive the deepest and for the lo ngest time.”“The calves have to follow what’s going on below them from the surface as best they can probably listening to the echo location(回声定位)clicks of the adults.”“However, sometimes the adults re-surface far out of sight of the calf, and in this situation the whales often leap out of the water causing a large bang as their bodies hit the surface. In this way, the whale family could regroup.”He added: “When I took the photo, two adults’females had just resurfaced and the calf quite l iterally began jumping for joy.”Mr. Hart captured the rare image four miles from the port of Lajes do Pico while he was working as a crewman on an underwater documentary with special license to film sperm whales in the area.Sperm whal es live in nearly all the world’s oceans in groups of about 15 to 20 animals and they practice communal(集体的) childcare. The calves do not have to follow their mother too closely as sperm whales can take milk from any milk-producing female in its social group.28. The underlined word “they” in paragraph 2 probably refers to _____.A. the whalesB. the diversC. the photosD. the mothers29. According to Justin Hart, the young sperm whale ____.A.found its family with his helpB.suffered a lot in the cold watersC.lost contact with its family for daysD.slammed as a means of communication30. What do we know about sperm whales?A.The young are independent.B.They are highly social animals.C.They te nd to live in warm sea waters.D.Females take turns to care for babies.31. What would be the best title for the text?A.Baby whales perform slamming with joyB.Sperm whales ---fairly intelligent animalsC.Lost sperm whale baby reunited with its familyD. Slamming--- a way of communication among whalesDFriends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few---for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy(亲密) between them and the reasons for the shared interests vary enormously. As we get to know people, we take into account things like age, race, economic conditions, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background. Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common ---they often talk about “being on the same wavelength.” It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to do friends favors a nd hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and try to tolerate differences of opinion. In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two perso ns. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.32. According to the author, ____.A.all those who get on well with each other are friendsB.friends are closer than people who just get on with each otherC.everyone understands clearly how to make friendsD.every student has 6 friends33. In paragraph 2, “being on the same wavelength” means ____.ing the same frequency while takingB.keeping the same friendly relationship as other people doC.having similar ideas, beliefs, attitudes and interestsD.having the same background34. Which of the following is not implied in the passage?A.Even friends may have differences of opinion.B.Friends never argue with each other.C.It generally takes time for people to become close friends.D.Someone’s habits may annoy his friends.35. To strengthen friendly relationship, people ____.A.must hold friendship ceremoniesB.have to eliminate(消除) differences in backgroundC.should make friends with those who are of the same age and of the same raceD.should support and understand each other through shared experiences andemotions第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

She was born in Atlanta in 1900. She started writing stories when she was a child. She started working as a reporter for the Atlanta Journal newspaper in 1922. One photograph of Ms. Mitchell, called Peggy, shows her talking to a group of young college boys. She was only about one and a half meters tall. The young men tower over her, but she seems very happy and sure of herself. The tour guide explains: ―Now in this picture Peggy is interviewing some boys from Georgia Tech, asking them such questions as ‗Would you really marry a woman who works?‘ And today it‘d be ‗Would you marry one who doesn‘t?‘ ‖The Margaret Mitchell House is a building that once contained several apartments. Now we enter the first floor apartment where Ms. Mitchell lived with her husband, John Marsh. They made fun of the small apartment by calling it ―The Dump ‖ .Around 1926, Margaret Mitchell had stopped working as a reporter and was at home healing after an injury. Her husband brought her books to read from the library. She read so many books that he bought her a typewriter and said it was time for her to write her own book. Our guide says Gone with the Wind became a huge success. Margaret Mitchell received the Pulitzer Prize for the book. In 1939 the film version was released. It won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture.21. Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers‘ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal. After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t G et Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity or extreme overweight among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing.25. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola?A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.C. They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyles.D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.26. This text is mainly the relationship between _________.A. Americans and the FrenchB. life style and obesityC. children and adultsD. fast food and overweight27. The text is mainly developed __________.A. by comparisonB. by spaceC. by processD. by classification(分类)28. Where does this text probably come from?A. A TV interviewB. A food advertisementC. A health reportD. A book reviewCHow to improve our life? Many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. They‘ll say, ―This is my destiny (命运). I cannot change it.‖Of course not! You don‘t have to suffer needlessly. Your life depends on you, not on any other external (外部的) factor.I know a woman who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it. Guess what her lifestyle is? She wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comesback home, relaxes, chats with people, watches TV, and then goes to sleep. Next day, the same routine cycle follows.Huh! Is this what she calls ―doing her best‖? She believes she has tried her best and just accepts it in her heart that this is the life that has been intended for her, and that her luck can only change if God wills it. She hasn‘t realized that we have to do our share of making the effort to live the life of our dreams.Remember that you harvest what you sow. You have to get off the sofa, get your eyes off the TV screen, get our hands off the phone (unless it contributes to your success), and get your mind and body to work! Don‘t expect your luck to change, unless you do something about it. If something goes wrong, don‘t just regard it as a temporary setback; instead, learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. It‘s not enough to think positively; you also have to act positively. If someone‘s life is in trouble, do you just hope and pray that things will turn out fine? Of course not! You get to do anything you can to save the person. So it is with your own life. It is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best. In other words, don‘t just stand (or sit) there, do something to improve your life.29. According to the woman mentioned in Para. 3, her life __________.A. doesn‘t need improvingB. will be better somedayC. couldn‘t be improvedD. will be worse in the future30. Which of the following statements is the author‘s opinion?A. Your temporary problem is not discouraging.B. Your luck can be changed by your efforts.C. AMy husband Ollie had retired from teaching and we were making plans to travel together to Florida. Then he was terribly ill and became very weak, hardly able to speak. Weeks passed and it became clear that Ollie was near death, but I prayed day and night that he could get better. One of us was always in Ollie's hospital room--either me, or our grown children, Bruce and Karen. One day, in his broken and weak speech, Ollie told Bruce, “Go home. You should be with Gwen.”Gwen was Bruce's wife. They had been married for six years and lived hundreds of miles away. Gwen was about to have a baby. We felt an extra sadness, knowing Ollie would never see his first grandchild.“I don't want to leave you, dad, ” Bruce said. Ollie repeated, “You should be with Gwen. ”Reluctantly, Bruce left. “When the baby comes, ”he promised Ollie, “you will be the first to know. ” A few days later, around 2 p. m., Ollie awoke from a sleep. He turned and looked at me. I sat close to hear his weak words. “The baby is coming now. It's a boy, ” he said. For a moment his eyes were filled with tears. Then he went back to sleep again. Not long after that, Karen ran into the room. “Bruce called, ”she said, a smile lighting her face. “Gwen gave birth to a healthy baby boy around two o' clock. ”Ollie smiled; he had been the first to know. It used to be thought that this couldn’t be helped, but new studies show that people of any age can train their brains to work faster. “Your brain is a learning machine ”, says University of California scientist Dr. Michael Merzenich. Given the right tools, we can train our brains to act like they did when were younger. All that’s required is the practice designed just for the purpose: a few exercises for the mind.Merzenich has developed a computer---based training method to speed up the process in which the brain deals with information. Since much of the data we receive comes through speech, the Brain Fitness Program works with language and hearing to better speed and accuracy.Over the course of training, the program starts asking you to distinguish sounds (between “dog” and “bog”, for example) at an increasingly faster speed. “It’s a bit like tennis instructor,” says Merzenich , “hitting balls at you faster and faster to keep you challenged. You may start out slow, but before long you’re pretty quick.”The biggest finding in brain research in last ten years is that the brain at any age is highly plastic. If you ask your brain to learn, it will learn. And it may even speed up while in the process. To keep your brain young and plastic you can do one of a million new activities that challenge and excite you: playing table tennis or bridge, doing crossword puzzles, learning a language...... “When it comes to preventing aging, you really do “do it or lose it”, says Barbara Sahakian, professor at Cambridge University.25.Dr. Merzenich’s training method mainly depends on ________.A. the information being dealt withB. computer languagesC. the activities one joins inD. speech training27. What can we learn from the text?A. Practice makes a quick mindB. Brain research started ten years ago.C. Dr. Merzenich is a scientist in computerD. People used to believe nothing could stop the brain slowing down.28. Which of the following agrees with the writer’s idea?A. The training methods work better for the oldB. The training of the brain should start at an early ageC. People should use the brain to stop it from aging.D. It’s necessary to take part in as many activities as possible.CDuring my high school years, the most important thing was what I was wearing tothe Friday night dance and who I was taking. Although college was talked about, it was the least of my worries. When I was graduating eighth grade and starting high school, my older brother was graduating twelfth grade and going onto college. For my graduation, he gave me a card in which he wrote, “Enjoy your four years…, they go by fast.” I remember not believing him then, but looking back…, he was right. Those four years shaped who I was as a person, pushed me to my limit and encouraged me to become an adult. However, I was so completely absorbed in my junior and senior years of high school, that when someone spoke of college I brushed it off. I wasn't ready to leave my comfort zone of having all of my closest friends together and knowing what every single day was going to be like . Studying was something I did only AFTER I nailed my half-time dance performance. I knew my parents wanted me to go to college, so I told them I would go to community college and I didn’t worry about my SAT scores. When my senior year passed and everyone graduated and went off to their own college ,I started to wish I had done the same. My friends were living away, meeting new people, discovering new places, and I was living at home and driving to and from class every day. It seemed exactly like high school. I hated it! I thought college was supposed to be different! Why didn’t I take more time to research colleges and do the same? I ended up loving college and wishing I had four years to enjoy the campus atmosphere instead of two.My advice to anyone thinking about attending college is to think about it very seriously and look into all of your choices well ahead of time. Now I have graduated and I am working full time and I would do anything to go back to my high school days for a second chance!29.Why didn’t the author worry about his SAT scores?A.He had a gift for dance..B.He wanted to go to community collegeC.He was well prepared for the exam.D.He believed his brother would help him.30.When in high school, the author .A.buried himself in his study all the timeB.lived in the school except on holidaysC.enjoyed talking about future college lifeD.drove to and from class every day31.What did the author’s brother mean by “Enjoy your four years…, they go by fast.”? A.He advised the author to value the years.B.He encouraged the author to leave his comfort zone.C.He wished the author to have more dance.D.He suggested the author aim at a community college.32.Talking of his high school years, the author feels .A.Lonely B. regretful C.angry D.pleasedDTime and how we experience it have always puzzled us. Physicists have createdfascinating theories, but their time is measured by a pendulum(钟摆)and is not psychological time, which leaps with little regard to the clock or calendar. As someone who understood the diff erence remarked, “When you sit with a nice girl for two hours it seems like a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove, a minute seems like two hours.”Psychologists have long noticed that larger units of time, such as months and years, fly on swifter wings as we age. They also note that the more time is structured with schedules and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to pass. For example, a day at the office flies compared with a day at the beach. Since most of us spend fewer days at the beach and more at the office as we age, an increase in structured tune could well be to blame for why time seems to speed up as we grow older.Expectation and familiarity also make time seem to flow more rapidly. Almost all of us have had the experience of driving somewh ere we’ve never been before. Surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, with no real idea of when we’ll arrive, we experience the trip as lasting a long time. But the return trip, although exactly as long, seems to take far less time. The unfamiliarity of the journey has become routine. Thus taking a different route on occasion can often help slow the clock. When days become as identical as beads(小珠子)on a string, they mix together, and even months become a single day. To fight this, try to find ways to interrupt the structure of your day—to stop time. Learning something new is one of the ways to slow the passage of time. One of the reasons the days of our youth seems so full and long is that these are the days of learning and discovery. For many of us, learning ends when we leave school, but this doesn’t have to be.33. The quotation(引用语) in the first paragraph is used to indicate ______.A. physical time is different from psychological timeB. time should not be measured by a pendulumC. psychological time is quite puzzlingD. physical theory has nothing to do with the true sense of time35. What is the main idea of the passage?A. It gives various explanations about time.B. It explains why time flies fast and how to slow it down psychologically.C. It shows the different ideas of physicists and psychologists on time.D. It describes how we experience time psychologically.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AMy first full-time job after high school was selling vacation packages via the telephone for a well-known company. One day, I was put through to a man who sounded a bit out of breath. I started with my normal pitch (音高), expecting to hear the normal reply —"I don’t want any."Instead, he spoke in a faint, weak voice and told me how he wished to take a vacation I was offering, but he couldn’t because he was dying of illness. He explained how he was lacking in oxygen then, and it took almost all his energy to answer the call. He asked if I smoked, which I did, and begged me to stop. He told me smoking was what was killing him. He told me to spend every day with my loved ones, and tell them how much I love them. At this point, I couldn’t control myself. We ended the call, but I held on my phone to prevent another call coming in so I could collect myself.I wrote down his name and address, and sent him a card appreciating his advice and praying for him and his family. Shortly after, I received a letter from Frank, along with a picture of him and his wife. We continued to write back and forth over the next few months, and became very fond of each other. He was old enough to be my grandfather, and in many ways, I felt as if he was.About a year later I received a letter from his wife. When I started to read, tears came to my eyes. She told me how Frank’s battle with the disease had finally come to an end, and he passed away shortly before the Christmas. She wanted to thank me for the letters to Frank, and explained how Frank touched many lives over the years. At his funeral, to show just that, they read the 1st letter I had written to Frank to show how he affected a 19-year-old he’d never met. 21. The author was then probably working for ______.A. a travel agencyB. a cigarette companyC. an e-shopping storeD. a vacation school22.The underlined part "collect myself" in the second paragraph probably means "_______". A. gather together B. comfort myselfC. relax myselfD. calm down23. We can learn from the text that the author ________.A. took down Frank’s name and address to visit him in personB. was warmly welcomed by her customers when she called themC. didn’t stop smoki ng even though Frank asked him toD. kept in touch with Frank through letters until he died24.At Frank’s funeral the author’s 1st letter to Frank was read in order to ____.A. encourage people to fight against disease and live bravelyB. indicate that Fra nk touched many people’s heartsC. show the good relationship between Frank and the authorD. praise Frank and give thanks to the authorBShakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the greatest resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twentyfive thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare uses it. Such a study is well worth the effort, even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare's day. However, it is surprising that we should know comparatively (相对地) little about the life of the greatest English author. We know that Shakespeare was born in 1564 in StratfordonAvon, and that he died there in 1616. He almost certainly attended the grammar school in the town, but of this we cannot be sure. We know that he was married there in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and that he had three children. We know that he spent much of his life in London writing his masterpieces. But this is almost all that we do know. However, what is important about Shakespeare's life is not its details but its products, the plays and the poems. For many years scholars have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare's life to the small number we already possess and for an equally long time critics (批评) have been theorizing (理论化) about the plays. Sometimes, indeed,it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear under the great mass of comment that has been written upon it.Fortunately, this is not likely to happen. Shakespeare’s people have long delighted not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere, and will continue to do so after the scholars and critics and all their works have been forgotten.25.What's Paragraph 1 mainly about?A.The great varieties in writing styles.B.The great length of Shakespeare's works.C.The richness of the content in Shakespeare's works.D.The rich English language used by Shakespeare in his works.26.According to the passage, which of the following remains uncertain about Shakespeare? A.His date of birth. B.His marriage.C.His life in the grammar school. D.His date of death.27.What does the last sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?A.People don't think the poetry of Shakespeare good any more.B.People pay more attention to the comment than the poetry of Shakespeare.C.People can't read the poetry of Shakespeare any more.D.The comment is printed on the poetry of Shakespeare.28.“Shakespeare's people”in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.A.the characters in Shakespeare's worksB.the people living in Shakespeare's dayC.the readers of Shakespeare's worksD.the people whose native language is EnglishCThe English test will be removed from China’s college entrance exam by 2020, according to the Min istry of Education. The national college entrance exam, known as the “Gaokao” has been used to evaluate Chinese students for three decades. The Ministry of Education has worked out a plan for reforming exams and enrollment. Tests will be held several times a year to allow students to choose when and how often they sit the exam so as to reduce study pressure and change China’s once-in-a-lifetime exam system. The decision has aroused a heated discussion among Shanghai educators and parents who doubted whether the reform would reduce the burden of learning English or if the substitute test could reflect a student’s English skills and help students learn English better.“As far as I see, the reform doesn’t mean English is no longer important for Chinese students after it is excluded from the unified college entrance exam,” Yu said. “In a way, English is even more important than before since the test would only serve as reference, while every college and university, even every major, can have different requirement s of a student’s English skills under a diverse evaluation system.”Yu said some students will have their study pressure reduced if the major they choose doesn’t need excellent English while others still need to study hard if they want to be among the best students. The education ministry said the reform would not affect students attending the college entrance exam over the next three years.29.What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. AI've always felt a need to be prepared for whatever situation I've found myself in.My mother once took me to a store when I was seven years old.She and I got to the checkout counter, and she realized she had forgotten a couple of things on her shopping list. She left me with the cart and ran off to get what she needed. "I'll be right back." she said. She was gone just a few minutes, but in that time, I had loaded all the things on the belt and everything was rung up.I was left staring at the cashier, who was staring at me."Do you have money for me, son?" she said."I'll need to be paid."I didn't realize she was just trying to amuse herself. So I stood there, ashamed and embarrassed.By the time my mom returned, I was angry."You left me here with no money! This lady asked me for the money, and I had nothing to give her.”Now that I'm an adult, you'll never catch me with less than $200 in my wallet.I want to be prepared in case I need it.I've always admired people who are over-prepared.In college, I had a classmate named Norman. One day he was giving a presentation on an overhead projector and in the middle of his talk, the light bulb on the projector blew out.We would have to wait ten minutes until someone found a new projector."It's Okay." he announced."There's nothing to worry about."We watched him walk over to his bag and pull something out.He had brought along a spare bulb for the overhead projector.Who could even think of that?I often told my students, " When you go into the wilderness, the only thing youcan depend on is what you take with you." And essentially, the wilderness is anywhere but your home or office. So take money.Pack a light bulb.Be prepared.21.Why did the cashier ask a seven-year-old boy to pay for the purchases?A.The boy was shopping by himself.B.The boy's mother asked her to do so.C.The cashier was playing a joke on him.D.The boy's mother was away for something else.22.Why did Norman bring a spare bulb with him?A.He was always well-prepared.B.His presentation was about bulbs.C.He knew the classroom equipment was of poor quality.D.He predicted the bulb on the projector would blow out.23.What do the two stories tell us?A.Accidents happen almost every day.B.In fair weather, prepare for a rainy day.C.Money is the key that opens all doors.D.Chances favor those who are well-prepared.BAs a leading Chinese language school and a cultural exchange institute in China,Global Exchange Education Center has been providing Mandarin (or Putonghua) language courses and cultural exchange programs for over a decade. How to apply for our programs■In order to apply for all of our programs, you must beat least 18 years old.in good health,a senior high school graduate.■Application Procedure for Chinese Language ProgramsStep 1. D.Their feedbacks on the program.C"Oh, my God! Did I really just send that text?" Most people have said something that they wish they could take back. And if they had paused to think about it first, they probably would have acted differently. Pausing doesn't pay off just when you speak. Scientific studies have shown that making a habit of pausing before you do something can actually have a big impact on how your life turns out.In making decisions we rely on two areas of the brain. One area creates and processes emotions; the other governs logical thought. The type of decision, how we feel about it, and how prepared we are to handle it help determine which brain area has the most influence. But our age also plays an important role. Thinking through the consequences of one's actions is actually harder for teens because the area controlling logical (逻辑的)thought is not fully developed until around age 25. This is why teens often feel an intense emotional drive to act impulsively(冲动地)---it's how their brains are structured! Though this tendency to act without considering the outcomes can lead to problematic situations, impulsivity during the developmental years evolves because it makes teens more open to new experiences and ideas. This openness helps teens to become independent adults. The key to making impulsivity work for you instead of against you is to train your brain by practicing pausing. This doesn't mean you stop taking risks or being open to new experiences. But you won't know if the risk is worth it until you think it through. Deciding to take a risk based on logic shows self-control, not impulsivity. What are different ways to pause? You might take a deep breath, count to 10, or ask "Is this worth it?" different strategies work for different people. Whatever works for you, keep doing it! By practicing pausing, you can actually change your brain. This means that over time, pausing, instead of immediately reacting, becomes your "natural" response. And with this change, people are on their way to enjoying the life rewards that come with high levels of self-control---even if they weren't natural-born pausers!28. What challenges teenagers?A. Giving natural response.B. Making logical decision.C. Acting before thorough thinking.D. Choosing brain-training strategies.29. An impulsive person tends to____.A. consider or accept new ideasB. change ideas frequentlyC. think through a risk in advanceD. show high level of self-control30. What is the best title for the passage?A. Push the Pause ButtonB. Impulsivity WorksC. Discover the Brain FunctionD. Crying Over the Spilt MilkDOne of the main challenges facing many countries is how to maintain their identity in the face of globalization and the growing multi-language trend. "One of the main reasons for economic failure in many African countries is the fact that, with a few important exceptions, mother-tongue education is not practiced in any of the independent African states." said Neville Alexander, Director of the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa at the University of Cape Town.In response to the spread of English and the increased multi-language trends arising from immigration, many countries have introduced language laws in the lastdecade. In some, the use of languages other than the national language is banned in public spaces such as advertising posters. One of the first such legal provisions(规定) was the 1994 "Toubon law" in France, and the idea has been copied in many countries since then. Such efforts to govern language use are often considered as futile by language experts, who are well aware of the difficulty in controlling fashions in speech and know from research that language switching among bilinguals is a natural process. It is especially difficult for native speakers of English to understand the desire to maintain the "purity" of a language by law. Since the time of Shakespeare, English has continually absorbed foreign words into its own language. English is one of the most mixed and rapidly changing languages in the world, but that has not been a barrier to acquiring superiority and power. Another reason for the failure of many native English speakers to understand the role of the state regulation is that it has never been the Anglo-Saxon way of doing things. English has never had a state-controlled authority for the language, similar, for example, to the Academic Francaise in France. The need to protect national languages is, for most western Europeans, a recent phenomenon-------especially the need to ensure that English does not unnecessarily take over too many fields. Public communication, education and new ways of communication promoted by technology, may be key fields to defend.32. Neville Alexander believes that __________.A. mother-tongue education is not practiced in all African countriesB. globalization has resulted in the economic failure of AfricaC. globalization has led to the rise of multi-language trendD. lack of mother-tongue education can lead to economic failure33.The underlined word "futile" (in paragraph 2) most probably means " ___________".A. workableB. practicalC. uselessD. unnecessary34. AThe house was quiet at 5 am and Tim’s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the b ig freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt of the cave last night. The purring (轻微颤动声) of the freezer had been the sea.Tim pulled on a sweater and put some apples into his schoolbag. It was too early for breakfast. He’d eat after he’d been through the ca ve, sitting on the rocks and staring at the sea.He wished he had a proper pack. His schoolbag would have to do. What else? Sandwiches-but his mother might wake up if he started pulling out bread for sandwiches, she' d want to know why he had to leave so early. He settled for some biscuits, and left a note stuck to the table: Gone to Michael’s. Back tonight, Tim.The sky was high and soft and light outside, though the sun still wasn't up. Even the highway up the hill was quiet as he made his way down the street. The wind from the sea was fresh and sweet. The sand hills still breathed heat from yesterday’s sun, though the top of the sand was cool. He ran down to the beach impatiently, but there was no one, just dry sand dancing in the early wind and seabirds marching up and down watching the waves. The light changed suddenly. The first rays of sunlight stretched across the sea. The sun was pushing its way over the edge of the world.Over the first rocks, along to the point, Tim glanced back. The beach was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky.He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it. The art of the selfie is one that lots of people have practiced and perfected in recent years. A recent study shows 91 percent of teens have posted a photo of themselves online. Some celebrities (名人) are regular selfie posters, too. It seems that selfies are more than just a trend. They are here to stay. Why are selfies so popular? The appeal of selfies comes from how easy they are to create and share. And posting selfies is popular for another reason: you can control your own image. “I like having the power to choose how I look,” admits Samantha, a 19-year-old girl from Missouri, “even if I’m making a face.” Actually, the most common selfie is the one where you look cute, partly because it’s a quick way to get positive comments about your appearance. “If I feel pretty, I take one,” says Andrew, a 23-year-old girl from Maryland, “when other people Like (点赞) it, it’s a mini boost of confidence.”Sure, showing off a new coat or that you’re at a cool event is fun, but can be a trap to fall in. There’s a danger that your self-respect may start to be tied to the comments and likes you get when you post a self ie, and they aren’t based on who you are---they are based on what you look like. Seeking validation (认可) is totally normal, and it’s a healthy way for teenagers to develop their identity. But with social networks, where it’s easy to get quick approval almo st constantly, the selfie thing can quickly go out of control. It may even start to feel like an addiction: when you get a “LIKE”, you’re up. But when you get nothing, your confidence can decrease quickly.Overall, opinions vary on selfie culture. It’s up to you to shape the future of the habit. Ask yourself: are my selfies for fun, or do I need the comments? I f you belong to the latter, it’s recommended that you change your view. That could mean cutting selfies out entirely or just cutting down and making them more fun. So maybe you like to travel, or read or dance, or create crazy 3-D nail art…post them! Take it from us: i t’s so much more interesting.28. A new study used a computer model to predict how just three grams less a day would affect heart disease in the United States. The result: 10% fewer heart attacks. 8% fewer strokes. 4% fewer deaths. 11%fewer new cases of heart disease. And 240 billion dollars in health care savings.Researchers found it could prevent 100, 000 heart attacks and 92, 000 deaths every year. The study is in the New Engl and Journal of Medicine. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo at the University of California San Francisco was the lead author. She says people would not even notice a difference in taste with three grams, or one-half teaspoon, less salt per day. The team also included researchers at Stanford and Columbia University. Each gram of salt contains four hundred milligrams of sodium(钠), which is how foods may list their salt content. The government says the average American man eats ten grams of salt a day. The American Heart Association advises no more than three grams for healthy people. It says salt in the American diet has increased by fifty percent since the 1970s, while blood pressures have also risen. Less salt can mean a lower blood pressure.New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is leading an effort called the National Salt Reduction Initiative.
