I can proudly say that last year I broke the record for the oldest person in the world to ride a roller-coaster. I'm 105, but I feel younger. Even the doctor agrees I'm in good condition. I'm a bit deaf and my legs feel weak, but they are the only issue.

I rode the Twistosaurus at Flamingo Land, which spins you round quite fast. I didn't choose to go on it at first. I had intended to ride a really faster one that went upside down, but I was told I couldn't ride something like that, because my blood pressure could drop and I might have some danger.

I wasn't nervous - I don't get frightened of anything. I was securely

fastened, so I knew I wouldn't fall out. The roller-coaster ride went on for three or four minutes, and it couldn't be a better experience. And I raised a lot of money for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance fund, which was fantastic.

People were saying I'd got a place in the Guinness World Records. Later, someone came to present me with the certificate. I had it on the wall in my living room, with another one that got a year earlier.

My record-breaking ways really began a couple of years ago, with the ice-bucket challenge. It turned out that I was probably the oldest person in the world to do it, and the video was very popular. After that, I stared to think about what else I could do to raise money for different charities.I'm not sure if anyone admires all the fun I'm having. They just say I'm daft and that's about it. But I've had many good days and many exciting times. I've had a really good life. I don't think I've wasted any of it.

24. Why didn't the author choose to go on riding the Twistosaurus?

A. Because he was told not to do so.

B. Because he thought it

spun too fast.

C. Because he considered it gentle.

D. Because he was in a bad physical condition.

25. How did the author most probably react while riding the roller-coaster?

A. He was very worried at first.

B. He really enjoyed

himself.

C. He couldn't think much about it.

D. He got frightened as it started moving.

26. What do you know about the author from Paragraph 4?

A. He set two records in total.

B. He disliked showing

off his success.

C. He was the oldest person in the world.

D. He was eager to get

certificates.

27. Which word can best describe the author?

A. Cooperative.

B. Intelligent.

C. Generous.

D. Optimistic

C

We all have one shirt in the closet that we don't want to get rid of, yet keep around because we can't bear to just throw it in the garbage. We don't wear it any more. Being a little out of style, your old T-shirt needs a new home where it can be appreciated. One city in Toronto has started a project to give it one.

Earlier this year, the Toronto suburb (郊区) of Markham introduced a new program encouraging its residents and residents of nearby suburbs to donate their old unwanted clothing. The program is exceptional because unlike most of those second-hand stores, they are accepting old clothing that isn't quite in perfect condition. It is breathing new life into these typically-trashed items. Contrary to common belief, textiles (纺织品) are not only used for clothing, and these items are being repurposed in a variety of interesting ways.

The city has set up many different donation centers around the suburbs, and residents are encouraged to donate any unwanted textiles they happen to have lying around their house. It's volunteers' duty to divide the donations into different sorts. Those items in usable and good condition are donated to local homeless shelters and other aid centers. Those which are not are shipped off to be used for industrial purposes. Only when there is no more industrial need for fabric and textiles will they begin to use their last place—a landfill outside the city.

The program isn't the city's only green initiative (倡议).It has already had one of Canada and the world's largest solar panels, and it is said that they are steadily working towards a shift to 100% renewable energy. The city also has subsidized (补助) farmers' markets and over 125 miles of bike paths. As a result,Markham also has a much lower rate of obesity than other Canadian cities. Now,it's working towards another goal—100% recycling of unwanted textiles.

28.What does the underlined word “one” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.a shirt. B.a home. C.a city. D.a closet. 29.What do the volunteers do with the unwanted clothing?

A.sort through the donations. B.sell some in good condition. C.share them with poor kids. D.send them for industrial use.

30.What does the author want to say in the last paragraph?

A.The city is working hard to be a green one.

B.The program is more successful than expected.

C.The citizens have fallen in love with the city.

D.The city has been the best place to live in Canada.

31.What is the main idea of this text?

A.Rubbish has been put into wide use in Canada.

B.Old clothes are becoming more useful in Canada.

C.One Canadian city is giving old clothing a new life.

D.Donation centers become popular in Canada.

D

Alison Malmon was completing the end of her freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, US, when she got the news: Her older brother Brian, a student at Columbia University, was suffering from mental illness.

Influenced by this, Malmon formed a group at her university to enable students to talk openly about mental health. It soon blossomed into a national organization that today has more than 450 campus chapters. Leaders with the organization spend their time talking with college students about the pressure that today’s young people face. “What you hear often is just a need to be perfect,” said Malmon, “and a need to present oneself as perfect.”

And a new study in the UK proved that this need for perfectionism is simply part of today’s society. In the study, two researchers studied more than 40,000 students from the US, Canada, and the UK. They found that what they called “socially-prescribed (社会定向型的) perfectionism” increased by a third between 1989 and 2020.

Lead researcher Thomas Curran said that while so many of today’s young people try to present a perfect appearance online, social media isn’t the only reason behind this trend. Instead, he said, it may be driven by competition in modern so ciety, meaning young people can’t avoid being sorted and ranked in both education and employment. That comes from new norms (准则) like greater numbers of college students, standardized testing and parenting that increasingly emphasizes success in education.

For example, in 1976, half of high school seniors expected to get a college degree of some kind. By 2020, more than 80 percent expected the same. The researchers also said changes in parenting styles over the last two decades might have had an impact. As parents feel increased pressure to raise successful children, they in turn pass their “achievement anxieties” onto their kids through “excessive (过多的) involvement in their child’s routines, activities or emotions.”

Those in the mental health community like Malmon say they’re concerned about the impact the culture of perfectionism has on mental health on campuses.

“Mental health has truly become this generation’s social justice issue,” she said. “It’s our job to equip them with the tools and to let people kn ow that it’s not their fault.”

32. What is the topic of the article?

A. The effects of the culture of perfectionism.

B. A group dedicated to helping people stay mentally healthy.

C. Research into the trend of perfectionism.

D. Various pressures that today’s young people are facing.

33. What inspired Alison Malmon to start a group related to mental health?

A. Her strong interest in mental health.

B. Her project during the freshman year.

C. The pressure she had experienced.

D. Her brother’s mental illness.

34. What may be pushing today’s young people to struggle to be perfect,

according to the article?

a. The impact of social media.

b. Parents’ high expectations of their children.

c. The decreasing number of college students.

d. The fierce competition in society.

e. Their desire to draw their parents’ attention.

A. a, b, d

B. a, d, e

C. a, b, c

D. b, c, e

35. What does Malmon think is a way to help young people manage the pressure

of perfectionism?

A. Making them aware of what true social justice is.

B. Lowering their expectations of themselves.

C. Reducing parents’ involvement in their children’s life.

D. Enabling them to know what is to blame for their pressure.
