(A)Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): (6分)
Recognized as the largest desert in the world, the Sahara Desert runs across 图片
North Africa. Except for an several oasis (绿洲), this vast land is mainly
made up of sand, stones and mountains. The burning sun causes daytime
temperatures to rise to nearly 70 degrees in the shade (阴凉处), and days without rain commonly last for years.
Paintings found on the walls of caves in the Sahara Desert suggest that a few thousand years ago, large quantities of plants grew there and covered the desert floor. Many unusual insects, birds and animals got enough food that allowed them to grow and reproduce (繁殖). At that time, huge river systems and many oases supported growing communities where a large number of people lived.
Scientists believe that the land became a desert for several reasons. For centuries, people there have moved from place to place in search of food, water and grazing (放牧的) land for their animals. These people have always considered the number of animals they have as a sign of wealth. The large herds (群) have been allowed to go freely and graze on plants and grass. Over time, large sections of land have been left uncovered. In addition to over-grazing(过分放牧), these people cut down whatever trees they could find and used them for firewood. The sand was unable to hold on to the great heat of the day, so nighttime temperatures often drop below freezing and nothing was left to hold the soil(土壤) together.
Scientists have been studying different ways to bring back the green desert. Through researches and experiments, they hope to be able to produce plants that will once again support the life there. Huge holes filled with much water lie under the desert surface. By making use of the sun’s power, scientists in the Sahara have made experiments in which they made huge amounts of electricity. This electricity has then been used to operate drilling (钻孔) machines and pumps to pull the rainwater from the underground tanks.
Scientists have had some success turning this wasteland (荒漠) into useful farmland. Today the desert is dotted (点缀) with huge wheat fields watered by pipes that carry water from the underground tanks. Farmers have also learnt that plants grow better if seeds are
planted next to stones which could provide protection from the sun. In addition to that, greenhouses have been built to protect plants from the sunshine so that less water is needed. Another idea is to grow plants that can live on a diet of salt water, since the ocean is near the desert.

Imagine, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.
Sounds unusual, doesn’t it? But it has come true, with the development of China’s high-speed railway system. And that’s not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan—to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and finally with Eastern Europe.
China is negotiating (协商) to s___86___ its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, at the end reaching London and Singapore.
China has prepared for t___87___ such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore through Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe.
If China’s plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could zip over (高速运行) from London to Beijing within two days. The new system would still follow China’s high-speed railway standards.
Of course, there are some technical challenges we have to face. There are so many things to be i___88___, for example, safety. So, it’s important to pay attention to every tiny thing.
But the k___89___ point is really money. China has already spent hundreds of billions of yuan on the railway system in the country.
China p___90___ that the other countries pay with natural resources(资源) rather than with capital investment (资本投入). Resources from those countries could stream into (涌入) China to its long-term development.
It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will surely c___91___ more chances for business, tourism and so on, not to mention(提及) better communication among those countries.
For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west. We foresee (预见) that in the near future, millions of people will move to the western areas, where the land is e___92___ and resources are rich. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west. And they’ll trade with Central Asian a nd Eastern European countries.

(D)Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题): (12分)
A happy person has a longer life, collects more friends and has greater chances of developing successful relationships with people around him. So happiness is an important aspect (方面) of a person’s life, and how to achieve happiness in life has become an important topic.
If you want to find lasting happiness, you must first be at peace with yourself. Are you satisfied with yourself? Are you pleased with your job? There are probably a number of answers to these questions, but what is the most important here is that you accept yourself for who you are.
Think positively (积极地). Thinking in a positive manner is also a good idea to achieve happiness in life. Start filling your mind with positive thoughts the moment you wake up. If negative (消极的) thoughts come to your mind, drive them out at once, and then look for the positive side in every situation. Stay away from negative-minded people for they will influence your mood. You will notice that all the great things are happening around you.
Make others happy. Another way to achieve happiness in life is to cheer someone up or make somebody happy. It does not matter whether it is someone you know or a stranger on the street. What is important is the feeling that you get after making others smile and giving them happiness. You will be happy when you see other people smile.
It is good that these days, more people start learning how to achieve happiness in life. After all, in the end, a life filled with happiness and wonderful memories is much better than that filled with disappointment and anger. 93. What’s the main idea of the passage?
