A

The old man fished alone in a small rowboat and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s patents had told him that the old man was now bad luck, and ordered the boy to join another boat, which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty and he always went down to

help him carry in the fishing lines or take down the old, patched sail.

“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they dragged up the boat to the sand. “I could go with you again. I’ve made some money.” the old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him. “No,” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them. You must obey your father.” “We can be lucky again too. Remember when we didn’t catch a fish for 10 days, then caught a big one each day for a month?” said the boy. “Can I offer you a beer on the balcony and then we’ll take the stuff home,” said the boy. “Why not?” the old man said.

“Santiago,” the boy said as they sat on the balcony, “If I cannot fish with you, I would like to serve in some way.” “You bought me a beer,” the old man said, lifting the bottle to his mouth. “Do you remember the first time I took you out to fish?” the old man asked. “I was five. I remember the tail of a huge fish slapping against the boat, the noise of you clubbing him and the sweet blood smell. I remember everything from when we first went together,” the boy said. The old man looked at him with his sun-burned, loving eyes.

“May I get some sardines for tomorrow? Let me get four fresh ones,” said the boy. “One,” the old man said. His hope and his confidence had never gone. But now they were freshening like a sea breeze. “Two,” the boy said. “Thank you,” the old man said. He was too simple to wonder wh en he had attained modesty. But he knew he had attained it and he knew it was not disgraceful and it carried no loss of true pride. “Tomorrow is going to be a good day with this wind,” he said. “I will row far out before it is light. There will going to be a good day with this wind,” he said. “I will row far out before it is light. There will be a big fish?” asked the boy. “I think so. And I know many tricks.”

B

Over the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal or at least many

parts of it have. In some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where

attitudes are concerned. Ideas about social class --- whether a person is “working

class” or “middle class” are one area in which changes have been extremely slow.

In the past, the working class tended to be paid less than middle-class people, such as teachers and doctors. As a result of this and also of the fact that workers’ jobs were generally much less secure, evident differences in lifestyles and attitudes came into existence. The typical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her “housekeeping”, would go out and squander (挥霍) the rest on beer and betting.

The stereotype (模式化的思想) of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was --- and still is --- tended to take a longer-term view. Not only did he regard buying a house as a most important thing , but he also considered the education of his children as extremely important. Both of these provided him and his family with security. Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity ( or the education and training ) to make such long-term plans.

Nowadays, a great deal has changed. In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much, if not more, than their middle-class administrators. Social security and laws have made it less necessary than before to worry about “tomorrow”. Working clas s people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority(自卑)they had in the past. In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle classes to feel slightly ashamed of their position.

The changes in both lifestyles and attitudes are probably most easily seen among younger people. They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes; they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference than in precious generations. Nevertheless, we still have a wide gap between the well-paid (whatever the type of job they may have) and the low-paid. As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will arise, or rather that the old conflicts will re-appear, but between different groups.

60. According to the passage, which of the following is not a typical feature of the middle class?

A. Desiring for security.

B. Making long-term plans.

C. Having vision for the future.

D. Saving money.

61. The author seems to suggest that the description of ___________ is closer to truth.

A. middle-class ways of spending money

B. working class ways of spending the weekend

C. working class drinking habits

D. middle-class attitude

62.Working class people’s sense of security increased as a result of all the following factors

except ___________.

A. better social security

B. more administration

C. higher self-confidence

D. less income inequality

63.Which of the following statements is incorrect?

A. Changes are slowly taking place in all sectors of the British society.

B. The gap between working class and middle class young people is narrowing.

C. Difference in income will remain but those in occupation will disappear.

D. Middle-class people may sometimes feel inferior to working class people.

An American shopper, Emma Mumford, who was named “the Coupon(优惠券) Queen” has spent just £350 on a luxury(奢侈) Christmas for her and her family—but got £2,500 worth of food, drink and presents thanks to coupons and offers.

The current Ebola (埃博拉病毒) outbreak in western and central Africa has infected at least 3,069 people,

including 1,552 dead, making it the largest outbreak in history. Ebola is a deadly virus —about 60 percent of people infected with it have died.

How is Ebola doing its harm?

When a person becomes infected with Ebola, the virus damages the body’s immune (免疫的) cells, which defend against infection, said a researcher at Lancaster University. But if a person’s immune system can stand up to this attack, then he is more likely to survive the disease.

The patients that survive it best are those who don’t get such a bad disadvantage in immune system. But if the body isn’t able to get rid of this attack, then the immune system becomes less able to regulate (调节) itself. This means the immune system is more likely to run out of control, leading to a drop in blood pressure, multi-organ failure and eventually death.

What are the common symptoms of the disease?

Fever. Headache. Joint and muscle aches. Weakness. Diarrhea. V omiting. Stomach pain. Lack of appetite. Chills. Rash. Redness in the eyes. Hiccups. Cough. Sore throat. Chest pain. Difficult breathing or swallowing. Bleeding inside and outside of the body.

How to prevent the spread of Ebola?

Ebola can be spread primarily via direct contact with patients, specifically the blood and fluids of an infected patient.

We should avoid contact with infected patients and objects such as clothing, bedding, and needles used by them. Avoid areas where infections have been reported. For now, the disease has only been confirmed in central and West Africa, four cases in America and Europe. Avoid eating wild-caught bush meat. Researchers have suspected that the disease came to humans via animals, probably through the meat of primates(灵长类). If you’re in an area where the disease has been reported, avoid purchasing, eating, or handling wild game to stay on the safe side.

Wear protective medical clothing if you’re around infected patients. Extreme caution is necessary. Hospital workers m ust use masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns, which needed to be worn at all times if you’re around infected patients.

How Do People Survive Ebola?

Doctors don’t know for certain who will survive Ebola, and there is no specific treatment or cure for the disease. Although in the minority, some people do recover from infection.

Our suggestions include:

Maintain your electrolytes (电解质) and body liquid. Sports drinks can be used. Monitor your blood pressure and control it if necessary. Dropping blood pressure may be a serious sign of infection. Breathe in an oxygen-rich environment. Quickly address any symptoms of infection. Be hones t about when and where you’re feeling pain.

68. Ebola causes the death of a human being by __________.

A. attacking him with high fever

B. regulating his immune system

C. damaging his immune cells

D. harming all his organs directly

69. What is NOT mentioned as the symptom of Ebola?

A. Fever and chills.

B. Swallowing difficulty.

C. Loss of blood.

D. High blood pressure.

70. In order not to be infected by Ebola, we should __________.

A. have the clothing of the infected cleaned

B. avoid eating wild animals like monkeys

C. not travel to Africa, America or Europe

D. stay at home without going anywhere

71. It is true that __________.

The term “Industry 4.0” refers to the fourth industrial revolution. The first industrial revolution was the production of goods with machines like steam engines, which was followed by the second industrial revolution that introduced mass production with the help of electric power, followed by the digital revolution —the use of electronics and IT in production.

Industry 4.0 is a high-tech project, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing (制造业). The basic principle of Industry 4.0 is that by connecting machines, work pieces and systems, we are creating intelligent networks along the entire value chain that can control each other automatically. The goal is the Smart Factory, which adapts well and uses resources efficiently as well as linking customers and business partners with great intelligence. Technological basis are the Internet systems and advanced factories. Experts believe that Industry 4.0 could be a reality in about 10 to 20 years.

So, what effects does this change have on the classic manufacturing? According to an expert, “it is highly likely that the world of production will become more and more networked until everything is connected with everything else.” Networks and processes have so far been limited to one factory. But in the time of Industry 4.0, the boundaries (界限) of individual factories will most likely no longer exist. Instead, they will be lifted in order to inter-connect multiple factories or even geographical regions.

How is an Industry 4.0 factory different from a today’s factory? In current industry environment, providing high-end quality service or product with the least cost is the key to success. Factories are trying to increase their profit as much as possible. In the time of Industry 4.0, various data sources are available to provide worthwhile information about different aspects of the factory. Using data for understanding the current condition and checking faults and failures is a natural thing. The sharing of information around the clock and around the globe will enable these connected systems to manage themselves independently, work more efficiently and identify any errors quickly.

The good news is that Europe is much better prepared for the Industry 4.0 revolution than one might think. Europe will position itself as a pioneer in the fourth revolution. Industry 4.0 is a project in the high-tech strategy of the German government. Meanwhile, in the U.S., some companies are also working hard on it. But the success of industry depends on whether business and politics can work together. It’s not only politics that needs to help open the door for Industry 4.0. Every company is advised to seize the new digital opportunities.

72. What marks the coming of Industry 4.0?

A. Steam engines.

B. Mass production.

C. Use of electronics.

D. Intelligent networks.

73. Industry 4.0 will probably result in _________ in the world of manufacturing.

A. production limited to an individual factory

B. everything connected with everything else

C. networks and processes no longer existing

D. classic factories stopping their competition

74. What’s the meaning of the underlined part in Para. 4?

A. Sharing information of the world time.

B. Global news broadcast at any time.

C. Instant worldwide information exchange.

D. Spreading news widely on the hour.

75. According to the last paragraph, who is the most active in pushing Industry 4.0?

A. The European companies.

B. The American government.

C. The American companies.

D. The German government.

Dear Mr. Smith,

I’ve read your advertisement for an assistant teacher for a children’s winter camp. I am quite interested in this position. I am outgoing, energetic, well-organized, and responsible; and most importantly, I love working with children! In the past two years, as a monitor in my class, I have proved myself to be an excellent helper to my teachers. I speak fluent English, which enables me to help native English teachers communicate freely and effectively with students in an English-only environment.

I will soon have a three-week winter vacation, so I have no problem working evenings and weekends. I can start working from the end of this month. I would be pleased to assist both the teachers and students in this challenging and rewarding environment.

Looking forward to your early reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Mr. Smith,

I’ve read your advertisement for an assistant teacher for a children’s winter camp. I’m very interested in this position and I think my personality and experience will qualify me for the job.

To begin with, I gain much experience of working with children from my part-time job as a babysitter. Besides, I have been a helpful assistant for both my English teacher and my classmates. More importantly, I can speak English fluently, which will help me work with native teachers from England. I will be available for the work on evenings and weekends and can start working from the end of this term. I would really appreciate it if you could give me this opportunity.

Looking forward to your early reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

听力录音原稿

(Text1)

W: Have you always liked classical music?

M: No. I’ve liked classical music recen tly. When I was in college, I liked rock music.

W: Well, in fact I’m really into pop music.

(Text 2)

W: I bought a second-hand TV set on sale yesterday. It cost me $150.

M: Only $150? Mine cost three times as much!

(Text 3)

M: I thought you were going to attend a meeting in Atlanta last Saturday.

W: I was planning to, but I haven’t been feeling well, so I stayed at home.

(Text 4)

M: You’re late for work again.

W: Oh, I’m sorry I’m late -- I miss the bus. I was trying to decide whether to walk or go back and get my bike

when I saw my neighbour. Luckily he offered me a lift.

(Text 5)

W: Sir, I really would love to be a policeman. I especially like the teamwork.

M: Sounds interesting, but I’m afraid the job is not proper for you, I mean, without any special tra ining or experience.

(Text 6)

W: Hello?

M: Hello, Ms. Lock. This is Jack Warner.

W: Uh, Mr. Warner ... in Apartment 205?

M: No, in Apartment 305?

W: Oh, yes. What can I do for you? Does your fridge need fixing again?

M: No, it’s the oven this time.

W: Oh, so what’s wrong with it?

M: Well, I think the temperature control needs to be checked. Everything I try to cook gets burned.

W: Really? OK, I’ll have someone look at it right away.

M: Thanks a lot, Ms. Lock.

(Text 7)

W: Hey, Ted. You look tired.

M: I didn’t sleep much last night. My roommate Allen has turned his computer into an electronic playground. He plays football, drives racing cars, and does a lot of other games.

W: Didn’t you like games? What do you usually do on the computer?

M: I don’t like them. I usually get a lot of information on the computer and use e-mail to send messages to my friends.

W: Me too. Recently, I’ve made friends on the Net. I talk to them frequently.

M: Don’t you think it’s a waste of both time and money?

W: I’m afraid not. To me getting in touch with each other has more fun than the coolest computer games or the hottest information.

(Text 8)

W: Good evening. This is Gino’s. Can I help you?

M: It’s my mother’s birthday next week, so I’d like to book a table.

W: Certainly, sir. Which day?

M: It’s next Friday, 20th of May.

W: All right. And how many people?

M: Let me see. There’s my wife and I ... our two children ... and Mun, of course ... oh, and my brother James. So that’s 6. And I don’t get home from work until 6:00 on Friday, so let’s say 7:00.

W: And what would you like me to put on the cake?

M: Oh! I didn’t know you did cakes! I think you’d better just put “Happy Birthday”.

W: That’s fine. All I need now is your name.

M: Nick Sherman.

W: Thank you, Mr. Sherman. See you on Friday.

(Text 9)

M: Hello, English Homestead Courses. Can I help you?

W: Can you tell me exactly what an English Homestead Course is, please?

M: Yes. If you take our course, you don’t need to go to a school or college. You can stay in your English teacher’s home.

W: I see, but will I be able to meet any other students?

M: Yes, all the students meet at the Sports Center every Wednesday. And on Fridays we go to the cinema. Every Saturday we all go on an outing.

W: Do I need to take any books with me?

M: The only thing you need to take is a dictionary. We’ll give you a course book and a grammar book when you get here.

W: And how much do the courses cost?

M: A-week-long course is £250, but it you take a four-week course, it costs only £860.

W: I see. Thank you.

(Text 10)

M: Hello, everyone. Now I’d like to tell you something about myself. I’m Pat Milton. I began to surf about 30 years ago when I was only 11 years old in Florida. I have been crazy about surfing since then. I took part in a lot of games when I graduated from university. I met Lynn in 1992. Then in the following four years as a championship group surfing team, we won nine titles, taking the gold in Santa Cruz and Oceanside. To tell you the truth, Lynn didn’t surf by herself and she was not a strong swimmer, so love can make one do crazy things!

In September 1994, we got married in California. Now both Lynn and I are teaching surfing at the San Diego Surfing Academy full time. We like to share our skills with surfing fans. We are living a happy life.
