一、阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)

A

“Only in a few years you’ll be an adult!” This statement is usually issued by adults with a wink at my mother. I usually take “the wink(眨眼)” to mean “ or at least that’s what she thinks, right?” It’s true that in two years I’ll be 18, and that will make me legally an adult. But it’s also just a number. It doesn’t come with a fantastic moment when you know all the adults are supposed to know what to do. It doesn’t make responsibilities easier. It just makes it legal for you to enter online sweepstakes(彩票)and work at Walmart.

This thought all started back in July when my friend, Dakota, officially flew out of military basic training in Oklahoma. He’s 17. Not an adult by the legal definition, but making a very adult decision. He can’t rent a movie from most places, but he can defend our country. I didn’t realize how much his actual departure would affect me and the way I viewed growing up and when it actually starts.

My best friend Madeline is now studying psychology in London. She’s 18. She has been working pretty hard to get the perfect grades. Now, she’s living on her own, doing little things that make her, in my eyes, an adult, and is in complete control of her personal life. I have a basic idea of how a loan works, and apply for one like her? Forget it. I haven’t even had a credit card until now.

My other friends are growing up around me, making decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. Where do I fit in? My life is so different from the standard; it’s hard to compare. I’m home-schooled. I’ve been a fashion blogger since I was 13, an occupation that has definitely taught me a lot first-hand about the outside world. Earlier this year, I got my first Teen V ogue feature(专栏)and worked with the Disney Channel. But if you add that up, it doesn’t equal an adult. It equals an accomplished teenager.

I made myself a list of “Things to Learn Before I Grow Up”. Number one? Figure out the whole significant thing. Maybe learning to cook something rather than buying ready-made food from the supermarket. But it’s also important for me to enjoy being young. I like having sandwiches my mom made for me, and getting to just be silly sometimes without worry. So in conclusion, my point is this: Being a grown-up is less about your age, but more about what you do with your life.

To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don't question never truly think for themselves. These are simple rules that have governed the advancement of science and human thought since the beginning of time. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories and introduce new ones. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was a brilliant

philosopher whose theories explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so esteemed by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them!

Brilliant minds can intimidate up-and-coming thinkers who are not confident of their abilities. They often believe they are inferior to the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current paradigms instead of questioning them.

I, like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental inferiority. I was certain that my parents, my teachers—adults in general—were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn't question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind’s independence was first stimulated in the classroom.

A stern, 65-year-old elementary-school science teacher once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that light is a wave. One day, however I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made up of particles. As the others laughed at his statement, I started to question my beliefs.

Maybe the teachers and textbooks hadn't given me the whole story. I went to the library, did some research and learned of the light-as-a-wave versus light-as-a-particle debate. I read about Einstein's discovery of the dual nature of light and learned the facts of a paradox(悖论) that puzzles the world's greatest thinkers to this day. Light behaves as both a particle and a wave, it is both at once. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth.

Each new year brought more new facts, and I formulated even more questions. I found myself in the library after school, trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are incredible tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. Even textbooks can be challenged. I learned to question my sources, I learned to be a thinker. I once believed that everything I learned at home and at school was certain, but I have now discovered to re-examine when necessary.

Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future? At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years—maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery. Questions are the tools of open minds, and open minds are the key to intellectual advancement.

A. he is the greatest and respected philosopher of all time

B. huge influence of great thinkers may block human thought

6.What does the underlined word “intimidate” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Frighten.

B. Encourage.

A. what he learned from textbooks before turned out to be wrong

B. he was inspired by the different ideas from an exchange student

Waste not, want not

Today,I live in Manhattan with my husband, Alex. I’m an IT specialist and Alex is a lawyer. Life’s good, but sometimes I look at the way we live it and think of Ellie, my grandmother. Her favorite saying was “ Waste not, want not. ” 31 .Ellie carefully folded the paper from parcels and washed glass jars to use again. Frank, my grandfather, used old socks and pullovers(套头毛衣) to protect the plants in winter. Nowadays, we go to a garden center to buy special felt for that purpose. Have we all gone mad?

Such economy seems strange, even ridiculous, in our modem throwaway society, where everything is sold in boxes. 32 , but as a selling feature to make us want to buy them. Ellie and Frank would have seen the very idea of a "gift pack" as a cheat.

33 The United States produces about 180 million metric tons of waste per year, 70% of which is packaging materials. The average American family uses up six trees’ worth of paper a year. 34 , they would reach to the moon and back twelve times. “We can’t go on like this,”I said to Alex.” Let’s start at home. If everybody starts at home, then this madness will stop."

35 Of course, this meant that we produced a lot of waste, but I was shocked to find that this came to over six kilos per week. “Your grandma Ellie with her ‘Waste not, want not’ was really modern, wasn’t she?” “Not really,” I said. “Ellie and their neighbors were just ordinary, traditional New Englanders. We’ve all gone mad since then.”

A. Packaging is not only used to protect goods

B.My grandparents threw almost nothing away

C.In one week alone, we threw away five old magazines

D.We didn't often go shopping and then cook meals at home

E.As young Manhattan professionals, we buy a lot of "convenience food"

F.But we pay a high financial and ecological price for our lovely packaging

G.If you placed all the cans used in the United States, in one year end to end

Once I came out of the kitchen, complaining, “Mom, I can?t peel potatoes. I have only one hand.” Mom never looked up from sewing. “You get yourself into that kitchen and peel those potatoes,” she told me. “And don?t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!” In the second grade, our teacher lined up my class on the playground and had each of us race across the monkey bars, swinging(摇摆) from one high steel pole to the next. When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids behind me laughed, and I went home crying. That night I told Mom about it. She hugged me, and I saw her “we?ll see about that” look. The next afternoon, she took me back to school. At the deserted playground, Mom looked carefully at the bars. “Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised.
